"It has been a long-standing tradition in Russian cinema to characterize those who rub shoulders with the West as somehow evil. The Italian adheres to this tradition by portrayal of the greedy Madam chasing little Ivan, but even though it may seem a little dishonest on the part of moviemakers who themselves are rather well off, it's hard to blame them for not wanting to give away their orphans if these kids make such an excellent film subjects."
