"A worthy compression of Waugh's intricate novel of upper-class British life, though hardly on a par with the earlier miniseries."

Twilight of Empire

"For someone like me, who haven't read the book, but admired the television series, this movie provides interesting second angle that gives the story and its characters additional depth. Emma Thompson gives Oscar worthy performance and beautiful photography pays tribute to the now famous Castle, a silent witness to this drama of forbidden love, religion and class."

"This movie is unbearable to watch. The characters are written shallow, acted shallow, and I hated every one of them. I became so annoyed by their inexplicable behaviors that I had a constant urge to walk out during the last hour and a half. "
