Leaving the Old World

Piotr
"A poetic look at last century emigrant experience. The movie can be divided into three parts. First one takes place in rural Italy where one poverty stricken family embarks on a journey to America. Second part is on a ship that has among its passengers two intriguing Americans: woman traveling 3rd class with Italians and a 1st class occupant played by the late Vincent Schiavelli. Third is a look at harsh rules of Ellis Island and should be required viewing for lawmakers who want to reform current immigration law. The movie has a few naive moments and a few beautiful too (e.g. the ship setting sail with passengers looking at their left behind families most of which were never to be seen again), overall it is more about parting with the Old World rather than about discovering the new one. In any case it is better than "Angela's Ashes" - other movie dealing with similar subject matter."

The Golden Door

"Based on the strong AJC review, I went to see The Golden Door on July 4. Don't bother. I like "slow" movies, but The Golden Door was so slow and boring I almost walked out. A total waste of time and money. And a wasted opportunity to show the immigrant "coming to America" experience. The posters outside the theatre touting the Venice Film Festival award, etc. etc. are a joke and misleading. You will be disappointed if you go. (I would have given The Golden Door "no" stars if that had been an option...."
