Cobbled 'Shoes' will leave book's fans feeling flat

Perhaps I went into "In Her Shoes" with too many expectations. First, I love designer shoes — Jimmy Choo, Prada, Stuart Weitzman. Second, I read and enjoyed the novel by Jennifer Weiner, but I tried not to let that influence my experience. That would have worked had the screenwriter, Susannah Grant ("Erin Brockovich"), and the director, Curtis Hanson ("L.A. Confidential," "8 Mile"), used the wonderful material provided in the book. Instead, they made a movie where each scene is a minute or two too long and the edits are choppy and inconsistent. The scenes involving designer shoes, however, were really good. TO SUM UP
Sisters Maggie and Rose Feller have nothing in common but their shoe size. They are best friends, but polar opposites in values, goals and style. Maggie is a party girl who barely graduated from high school; Rose is a Princeton-educated attorney at a top law firm. After a falling out, the two travel a bumpy road toward true appreciation for one another, aided along the way by the discovery of a grandmother they thought was dead.

READ THE REVIEW

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: C
"The performances are good — especially MacLaine, who knows this isn't first-rate material but still gives it her considerable best... But so much more is gooey and lazy and just not especially smart."

Austin American-Statesman: 2 of 5 stars
"Instead of going to see this movie, you should go to the mall or your favorite shop and buy a new pair of shoes."

Middletown Journal: A
"Women might have to drag men to this movie, but the men may well thank them for it."

The Palm Beach Post: B
"Bring lots of change or at least a cellphone with you. You're going to want to call your siblings as soon as it is over."

The Palm Beach Post "Flick Chick"
"Nobody, but nobody, does silent anger and regret like Shirley MacLaine."
