From staff reports
Former Temple High standout Kenneth Davis, one of Central Texas’ top all-time rushers, highlights a class of six former high school stars who will be inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame next May.
Joining Davis, the 1980s representative, in the Class of 2009 are James “T” Jones of Childress (pre-1949), Johnny Roland of Corpus Christi Miller (1950s), Bobby Goodrich of Dallas Wilson (1960s), Kirbyville’s Earnest “Bubba” Bean (1970s) and Shaud Williams of Andrews (1990s). Additionally, San Antonio Jefferson’s Pat Shannon will be inducted in the coaching category and Dr. Newt Hasson of Austin will be honored in the special contributor category.
Jones, a star quarterback at Childress who passed for 1,370 yards his senior year of 1948, went on to play and coach at Texas and later served as athletic director at Texas Tech.
Roland was a standout player for the Miller Buccaneers from 1958-60, while Goodrich was a two-time high school All-American who played on SMU’s 1966 Southwest Conference championship team. Goodrich went on to work for ABC Sports, winning 14 Emmy awards as a producer for many big games, including the Super Bowl and the Red River Shootout.
Bean finished his career at Kirbyville with 5,532 rushing yards, then a state record. Davis was a 1980 Super Teamer who went on to become an All-American running back at TCU, finishing as the Horned Frogs’ third all-time rusher.
Williams topped 2,000 rushing yards for three straight years at Andrews, finishing with 7,710 career yards. He began his college career at Texas Tech before transferring to Alabama, where he rushed for 2,228 yards.
Shannon, who will be honored posthumously, spent more than 50 years in education, and coached more athletes who played in the Texas High School Coaches’ all-star game than any other coach in the San Antonio area.
Hasson is in his 23rd year as the team doctor at Austin Westlake. He is a former Duke football player who was the Blue Devils’ team captain his senior year.
The Hall of Fame banquet is scheduled for May 2, 2009, at Baylor’s Ferrell Center.
