This is no science fiction.
Tuesday Waco’s Mars Snackfood US plant — maker of Snickers and Skittles, among other products, started exploiting a renewable energy source: methane from the Waco landfill to heat its boilers.
This will meet up to 60 percent of the Waco plant’s total boiler fuel requirements for the next 25 years— a savings of more than a half a million dollars a year.
As it showed off this new energy asset, the plant hosted a sustainable energy fair.
Methane from waste to save energy: This reminds us of new operations converting dairy waste in the Bosque watershed into methane.
Mars says its energy savings will equate to heating 2,700 fewer homes and removing 1,900 cars from the road.
Energy conservation isn’t just about improving the environment and saving finite resources. It’s about making sound business decisions.
This is one more big event in the rightful quest to make Waco Texas’ greenest city.

This is a great project. I hope that it will serve as an example for other companies in Waco as they search for ways to cut energy costs.

Flush twice to help Waco City Hall. Waco City Hall has been passing methane gas for years.
