How did fireflies choose
This summer night to start their
Blinking yellow lights?
* * *
Child’s summer lantern:
Lightning bugs in a fruit jar
Turning on the switch.
* * *
Calling each by name,
He brings out every star —
Not one is missing.
* * *
Has that rising star
I see again this morning
Traveled ’round the world?
* * *
For a midnight snack,
Two exhibitionist stars
Make a moon sandwich.
* * *
Washed clean by the rain,
The pre-dawn stars shake themselves
And shine with freshness.
* * *
Smoke from a campfire
And smells of breakfast cooking
Drift up to the stars.
