Guest column: Life's an adventure -- go for it

Helmet... check. Harness... check. Gloves... check. Harness buckles officially tested... check. Last will and testament ...what?

When I signed up for a zip line tour of the rainforest in Costa Rica, I had no idea what was involved. After the gear up, we climbed to the top of a 200-foot tower. No sweat until they said they would lift us up on to that cable. “Oh, and by the way, there’s a tower at the other end.  Sorry you don’t see it ... good luck.” We kept changing places until the fourth person finally went first, screaming all the way.

What a thrill! The things we saw in the canopy and on the floor of the rainforest were definitely worth the trip. Not to mention the rush.

Helen Keller said: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” As a travel agent, my job is to uncover all kinds of exciting adventures — all over the world — and help people find a way to make them happen.

Zip-lining through the rainforest was truly an adventure for me. In Costa Rica, you climb another tower at each stop. In Hawaii, you just walk off the platforms over various deep valleys. And, you can four-wheel through acres and acres of lush land, with stops in mud and caves to add to the thrill. The gear in Hawaii includes a rain suit, a bandana to keep the mud out of your mouth and your worst old shoes.

Have you thought about what your dream adventure would include? Would it be arriving at some of Mexico’s stunning Mayan ruins on a four-wheeler? Snorkeling a reef and even shipwrecks in Honduras? Biking in Beijing, hiking in Botswana or kayaking in Nova Scotia?

Sometimes an adventure lies in the mode of transportation itself. You can take an adventurous tour (of the luxurious cruise kind) around the world in 119 days. From a wine tasting at the oldest working vineyard in South Africa to a fashion show in Shanghai to a viewing of the Komodo Dragons, there are memories in every port.

Always dreamed of taking a trip around the world — but, don’t have the 119 days to spare? You can take private jet journey around the world in 20 to 24 days. Start in Washington, D.C., and end in Morocco. Or, begin in Xian, China and end in Angkor Wat, Cambodia.

Just the idea of Africa speaks adventure with big game and exotic cultural opportunities. You can take a tented safari and see the Africa of the movies and of your dreams, up close and personal.

Or maybe a river cruise is your idea of a daring venture. The castles of the Rhine or great cities along the Danube are well-known waterways through Europe. But did you know you could follow Peter the Great’s route along the Volga River from Moscow to St. Petersburg? Or cruise the Nile from Cairo to Abu Simbel, past the Great Pyramids and the Grand Temple of Luxor?

If watercolor is your hobby, perhaps take a barge from Paris through Burgundy — just like something you’ve seen in an impressionist painting? Visit the Normandy Beaches and Monet’s house in Giverny. Drift along the course of history while enjoying gourmet dining and elegant stateroom accommodations.

Have you ever thought of taking a sailboat through the picturesque islands of Tahiti?  You can do that too— the possibilities for adventure are endless! Deciding on the right trip, finding one you can afford and making all the arrangements can be tricky. A travel agent can help. We have access to information and reviews that will ensure you have a safe trip that is as comfortable or rugged as you want.

Whether you want to hike the Inca Trail or see the home of the Galapagos turtle with your family, it’s always the right time to start dreaming about your next adventure.
