Midway athletic director Randy Weisinger thought he was going to have a nice, relaxing summer.
Now Weisinger and Midway are working to fill one of the school’s most prominent coaching positions.
Midway girls’ basketball coach Teri Morrison announced last week she had taken the head girls’ basketball and assistant athletic director post at Southlake Carroll High School.
Morrison guided the Pantherettes to their seventh state championship in girls’ basketball in March. But now the school is looking for a candidate who will go after the eighth state crown.
“We’re going to take as much time as we need to find the right fit for our girls’ basketball position,” Weisinger said Tuesday. “It’s a prestigious position with a lot of success over the years.”
Weisinger said the job was posted last week and the school has received about 25 applications.
He indicated that head coaching experience would be a factor, but not a prerequisite for the job.
Morrison said she hoped that her assistant, Todd Monsey, would be strongly considered for the position. Monsey played a vital role in the Pantherettes’ game-planning on the way to their Class 4A state title last season. He was at the school as an assistant to former coach Linda Harding before Morrison came to Midway before the start of the 2007-08 season.
Weisinger said Monsey has applied for the head coaching position and would be considered.
The Midway athletic director also said he met with the returning players to get a feel for their hopes for the transition of head coaches.
“They want a coach that’s committed,” Weisinger said, “someone that’s going to carry on the tradition of success. It’s not just a job for somebody. It’s very important to them that the person is able to come in and continue the success that we’ve had.”
Weisinger said the school will begin looking at applications in about a week, but he didn’t give a specific timetable for when a hire might be made.
