Hard to argue with results

David Cook is the winner. He will sell tons of records, so it’s hard to argue with the voting, a vote that far eclipsed the previous high voting tally.

But David Archuleta will also sell tons of records, so if he had won, you wouldn’t be able to argue with it either. His performance with One Republic proved that he can cut it on a contemporary song.

The performance of the night, though, was Cook with ZZ Top on “Sharp Dressed Man.” Seriously, he should have sung that on Tuesday night for the competition round. In the end, his song choice didn’t hurt him, but that was a killer performance, with or without ZZ Top.

And so another season wraps up on “American Idol.” I’ve enjoyed discussing it vwith you these last five months. Hopefully, we’ll do it all again in 2009.

Cook is okay, but it seems to be to another sign of Americans lashing out at anything or anyone that seems to have a wholesome quality. The cynical rough-hewn crowd. To paraphrase the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, America seems to like ridin’ dirty these

I am totally rooting for “Little” David as we refer to him in our house hold! Don’t get me wrong… Cook is really good but he just seems a little too cocky for my taste.

David wins the night

So here’s a paraphrase of an old joke: Last night I was watching a hockey game and an “American Idol” episode broke out!

Did anyone else find the continued boxing metaphors, the corners, the robes, the freaky boxing announcer at the beginning with the descending microphone and the ridiculous commentary on how to fight by Jim Lampley excessively cheesy?

I mean Cheezits don’t have that much cheese in them.

Here’s a thought, can the stupidity and let the contestants sing an extra verse on each song.

With that said, I have to agree with the judges that Archuleta won the night. That’s not to say he’ll win the vote. But he poured way more of himself into every song than Cook did.

It was almost like Cook was a little tired of it all. He didn’t have the same energy he’s had in other weeks. He didn’t connect with the songs in the same way.

“Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” was an excellent choice for Archuleta. I’m not sure I could say that about any of Cook’s songs.

Yes, the judges way over-campaigned for Archuleta to win. But their over-exuberance didn’t diminish the fact that Archuleta won the night on a race that had been too close to call.

I like both. I’ll probably buy CDs of both. Winning or not winning isn’t going to affect either’s career one way or another. But a winner has to be selected and I think Archuleta earned it by giving his all.

On a side note, is it just me, or do those “American Idol” singles get worse every year. “A Moment Like This” was a decent, albeit not great, song. And since then, every year’s is a further descent into a sugary coma of irrelevance.

Simon losing girlfriend?

We’ve heard about Simon’s girlfriend several times this season. Paula even commented once on wishing Simon would follow his girlfriend’s advice on fashion.

But now, new information comes forward. Could Simon be about to get dumped by this girlfriend?

Terri Seymour, longtime lover of Simon Cowell, participated in a reality experiment for Extra! with America’s Got Talent judge (and former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff.

According to this reportHassellhoff proposed to Seymour after the two had spent 12 hours in a hotel room together playing video game and sharing massages. The whole thing was taped for Extra! and will air in three parts, beginning tonight.

Could Simon’s acid tongue finally have cost him something?

And will he have time to deal with it as the battle of Davids unfolds tonight?

And what about the career of The Hoff? America’s Got Talent is a show Simon created and produces. Will The Hoff get the ax?

I don’t know any of the answers, but it’s fun to speculate.

Fixing “Idol”

Last week FOX executives talked about their upcoming season and announced they would fix a problem with Idol by rolling back the results show to 30 minutes.

Thank You, Executives! Those result shows last forever now, with very little of substance. One Trib editor only watches the last 10 minutes as it is. It’s the only amount you have to watch to find out what really matters — Who’s in the bottom three and who’s going home.

This has prompted others to suggest other ways to improve the show. Andrew Payne filed this story for StarPulse.com, in which he suggests seven improvements. His seven:

  1. Guest judges
  2. Make voting cumulative
  3. Add a wild card slot
  4. Raise the age minimum to 18
  5. Less talk, more rock
  6. Ditch restrictive theme nights
  7. Make winning matter

Of these ideas, most have some merit and a couple would really improve things. For guest judges he suggests not making the mentor a judge as in previous seasons (when they glowed on the contestants more than Paula), but adding snarky, non-music types to shake things up. His point is valid: We know Randy will say something about dawgs, dope, da bomb or keepin’ it real; Paula will talk about colors, texture and the look; and Simon will tell the truth. We can almost skip it an fill in the blanks later. Guest judges would shake it up, if they were the right type of judges.

His point on wild cards is to let someone back in the top five who got voted out in a previous week. Like letting Michael Johns back in at the end. It might help, but more likely, we’re letting back in someone we thought did a lousy job earlier, if only for one week. I’m not sure that helps.

Raising the minimum age to 18 would mean the kids with the great voices could also be more seasoned performers. True, but only if they had another venue in which to perform for millions of people, which they don’t.

Making winning matter is his contention that everyone gets a record contract now, so winning isn’t as important as the overall exposure. True, but adding a cash prize to a bloated contract isn’t necessarily going to make the singing any better than it already is.

His best ideas are cumulative voting (to keep a bad week from robbing an otherwise great performer, like Tamayra in season 1 or Daughtry in season 5), ditching the restrictive themes for more general ones (like songs of the ’80s rather than all things Dolly Parton — let’s face it, not everyone sounds good on Dolly or Mariah or whomever), and best of all, less talk.

He contends (and I haven’t timed to verify, but I bet he’s right) that the video segments are now lasting upwards of two minutes, while the songs are limited to 1:30. He contends, give us a 30 second intro video and a COMPLETE song. I have to agree. I want to hear the whole song, and if it can be done without lengthening the show (by cutting something already there, like video intros), I’m all for it.

I suspect though, that performing the whole song costs more in royalty money to the original artist, making it a no-go for Idol producers. But if FOX execs are willing to give up half an hour’s worth of commercials next year, and the profits they generate, maybe anything is possible.

Following the careers of male Idols

281x211.jpg

With a finale starring two male singers now locked up, attention turns to what happens to the male Idol winners versus the female ones.

Carrie Underwood has the highest debut album sales of any Idol, with 6.4 million units. Kelly Clarkson follows with 5.9 million. No one denies that those are the two shining stars on the “American Idol” world.

By contrast two “Idol” winners, season 2’s Reuben Studdard and season 5’s Taylor Hicks have both been dropped by J Records, the studio that their “Idol” contracts placed them under. This is even though Hicks first album sold only 40,000 less copies than Jordin Sparks’ first effort. Studdard sold 1.78 million copies of his first album, but his latest effort only sold 230,000 copies.

But Studdard will be touring with the Broadway musical “Ain’t Misbehavin’” (which comes to Waco for one performance) from November to next May, and Clay Aiken has just completed a successful Broadway run in “Spamalot.” If we cheer Fantasia as a success story, even though her debut album sold less than Studdard, because she achieved Broadway success in “The Color Purple,” can we hold the men to a different standard?

And now, according to this report, Taylor Hicks is also getting a chance on stage, as Teen Angel in a new production of “Grease.”

Career success is defined in different ways. What path Davids Archuleta and Cook take remains to be seen. But it is undeniable that achieving success on “Idol” will open other doors.

David and Goliath

Like Simon said, “It’s going to be a humdinger” of a finale. I’m amazed no one on stage understood what he meant.

As we’ve suspected all along, the finale will be a battle of the Davids. I’m calling it “David and Goliath: A showdown of truly biblical proportions.” And I haven’t got a clue which one is David and which is Goliath.

But remember, the little guy won in the real story, so don’t count out “the underdog,” whichever one that is.

I’ve had conversations with people around the Trib office who think that Cook is the only one whose music is marketable. That’s like saying because there’s Bon Jovi, there’s no room in the marketplace for Josh Grobin.

Hogwash. Both Davids are going to sell music. They’ll just be featured on different radio stations: Archuleta on adult contemporary and Cook on rock.

I’ve also been told that Cook should win because we’ve already had an Archuleta type in Clay Aiken. “It’s already been done,” I was told.

My response to that is we’ve also had Chris Daughtry. And Clay Aiken supporters buy music from people other than Clay too.

My point is both are marketable and both are undeniably talented. Both also seem to make girls swoon (although the age groups might vary). As opposed to previous seasons, I think it’s impossible at this juncture to pick the winner. Both have won weekly voting tallies over the span of the season.

Isn’t this fun? Knock ‘em dead, David!

It’s David Cook, by default

Last night’s performances left me disappointed. I was expecting an all-on-the-line, wow-em set of performances.

What we got were good, but not great, performances. They were musically solid, but lacked the star quality you’d hope for.

The best performances of the night for me were at the beginning: David Archuleta’s “And So It Goes” (which made my toddler say “Wow”) and David Cook’s “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Both left me wanting to hear more. Unfortunately the rest of the night didn’t pan out.

Let me also point out that Syesha dressed to kill. She had three STUNNING outfits, and the playful flirting during “fever” was hot. Her performances weren’t in the same category as her stuff last week, but she looked good.

David Cook won the night, but only by default. It wasn’t so much that he did anything as unique or creative as he’s done in the past with “Hello” or “Always Be My Baby” as that he didn’t have a truly bad number, like David Archuleta did with “With You” (what was he thinking!) or Syesha did with “Hit Me Up” (what were the producers thinking!).

Actually, all the producer choices were bad. They should have let the contestants pick two songs each.

In past seasons, record mogul Clive Owen picked the third song, but that was getting pretty bad too. And in season 2 the contestants picked songs out of a fish bowl, which proved even more bizarre. So it’s a formula open to tweaking that needs to be tweaked again.

Based on performances, we should be headed to the battle of the Davids, but voting can be surprising at any level of “American Idol.”

Best of three tonight

Tonight’s round is all about threes. There are three contestants and three judges. There will be three songs for each contestant. And each contestant’s songs were picked by three different entities.

Yes, as in past seasons, each contestant will sing a song they pick, one a judge picked for them, and one picked by the production staff.

The contestants learned their judge’s pick at ceremonies in their hometowns on Friday.

My alert mother sent me an article from the Tulsa World about David Cook. He’s been living in Tulsa, but his hometown ceremony was in Blue Springs, Mo., a suburb of Kansas City. Nevertheless, the Tulsa paper has been keeping track of him as if he were a hometown boy.

According to the article, Simon picked for David (Cook, not Archuleta, mind you) Roberta Flack’s “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.” Now, there’s a pick out of left field!

I could see Syesha singing that. I could even see Archuleta singing that. But Cook? Only if he does to it what he did to Lionel Ritchie.

And maybe that’s exactly what Simon had in mind. We’ll see what happens tonight.

Be sure to come back tomorrow to share your thoughts on the evening.

David Archuleta’s Dad banned backstage

I’ve passed along before that David’s dad was the epitome of the bad stage parent, yelling at his son and others during rehearsals and causing some to cry.

Apparently now, he’s been banned from going backstage because of his behavior. With his backstage pass revoked, he can no longer accompany David during rehearsals, according to this report.

But the straw that broke the pass in two was not a shouting match, but his insistence, despite warnings to the contrary, that David include a verse from a different song in his rendition of “Stand By Me” last week. Money talks, and having to pay royalties to two artists made FOX say “Adios” to Jeff Archuleta.

Here’s the song that cost Jeff his backstage privileges:

And for comparison here is the Sean Kingston song that David included. Basically, he only used the one phrase, “And all these beautiful girls,” but you can definitely tell that this song influenced his entire arrangement of “Stand By Me.”

We’ll see if lacking his dad hinders David this week.

Hope for the teen crowd

Simon Cowell has announced that the minimum age on “American Idol” will have to be lowered soon.

According to this report, Cowell believes the show will have to “go younger,” dropping the age from 16 to 14 soon.

While some 14-year-old girls can actually sing pretty well, most boys are still trying to get their “new lower voices” under control at that age. When what you’re singing suddenly drops an octave, you really lose your bearings for a while, in my experience.

Also, while David Archuleta does show maturity and depth at age 17, how many 14-year-olds are really capable of singing some of these “Idol”-selected genres with the appropriate emotional gravitas?

Instead of going younger, I wish “Idol” would realize there is some good undiscovered talent that is older. For instance, I’ve always been just above the cut-off age. I was a year too old in Season 1, and then was still a year too old when they raised the age in Season 4. Raise it to 35 or 40 and give some of us old guys a chance!

On another note, Simon encouraged girls to cry to get more votes. Really.

America gets it right

Based on recent performance, the right person went home last night. Well, they’re all going home this week, but you know what I mean — left the competition.

In a week where we’ve lost Tamayra Gray and Chris Daughtry in past seasons, we remain on a collision course to the battle of the Davids this season. But, it was stated that only 1 million votes (out of 51 million) separated first and third this week. Syesha does have a shot to be the spoiler in all this — make no mistake about it.

On a separate note, a couple of weeks ago I reported that David Cook’s 2006 album “Analog Heart” was available as a download on amazon.com. Well, American Idol execs worked their magic and it was quickly pulled down, before I was able to download it.

After searching intermittently, I have found this website where you can listen to the songs from the album. There is no download option and right-clicking won’t work either, but you can at least hear David’s first solo effort, as well as the next-to-last album by Axium, a group he fronted. Enjoy!

FYI: Brooke White’s album and Carly (Hennessey) Smithson’s two albums are still available on Amazon. Curious, huh?

Performances leave no doubt who should go home

Yesterday, an alert A&M alumna in the Trib office kept sending me emails she was getting from the ex-student association about voting for Jason. One key line of one of the emails said “Something special happens when the Aggie family unites in support of a fellow Ag—bonds are strengthened, memories are made, and the Aggie story gains another layer.”

If the performances last night are really the new layer Aggies want to achieve, then you all have just hit a NEW LOW.

The boy stunk on ice last night. And that’s being kind.

There is no doubt in my mind that he was the worst performer of the night. He’s been the worst for the last several weeks. And he said up front last night that he actually knew these songs, so he can’t blame the newness anymore. Simon’s comment of “It was utterly atrocious” was even kind. If he had sung that in his initial audition, he’d still be studying landscape architecture in College Station and none of us would ever have heard of him.

Well, actually, they might have shown it as one of the really bad auditions we were supposed to laugh at.

Aside from Jason, Syesha had another strong night, making a very good claim to be in the final three. She has finally hit her stride, and her second song was so emotional you couldn’t help but tear up, at least on the inside.

David Cook squandered the opportunity to be truly brilliant. Yes, he was solid and should be in the top 3. But this was truly his genre night to shine, and he merely glimmered.

The shining star of the night BY A COUNTRY MILE was David Archuleta, who just won back my vote. After coming to the conclusion the last few weeks that David Cook should win, I’m now leaning David A’s way again. He was BRILLIANT! I loved the almost percussion-only arrangement of “Stand By Me.” And the tender care he took with “Love Me Tender” made me wish I had a wife to snuggle with while he sang.

So, Aggie Nation, I admire the sentiment, but please, please be honest enough to realize Jason must GO HOME!

Pop-Tart your way to an “American Idol” concert

Are you eagerly anticipating the appearance of this year’s top 10 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas (August 25) or the Toyota Center in Houston (August 24)? Maybe you’d prefer the show in Oklahoma City (August 28) or Tulsa (September 13)? Or maybe the gambler in you would like to bet you’ll be at the show in Bossier City (August 26)?

Well, here is some news you can use: Go to poptarts.com on May 13 to get a password for advanced ticket sales on May 14. Pop-Tarts is offering the tickets this way before they go on sale to the general public. I’m not sure how this is exclusive and not available to the general public anyway, but this report does not mention you needing any proofs of purchase of codes from Pop-Tarts boxes in order to get the password.

But, if you’re eating the favorite toaster pastries anyway, you can save tokens from specially-marked packages for a limited-edition special American Idol speaker for your MP3 player. Think how much better David Cook will sound when you hear him through a speaker with a Pop-Tarts logo on the side.

Or, if you’re poor (like me and most people I know), buy the generic toaster pastries and watch the TV show for free. As Fred pointed out, it’s like the Bread and Circuses of the modern generation.

Looking toward the past with new release

As we wait eagerly for David Cook to rock the house tomorrow night on “Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame Week,” let’s turn our attention to an almost Idol of the past.

Clay Aiken finished second in season 2 in the closest balloting the show has yet seen. (We could be headed to the record-breaker this season, but who knows?) Since then he has released three albums, “Measure of a Man,” which was all original stuff; “A Thousand Different Ways,” which featured four new songs and eight covers; and a Christmas album that was mostly the standard carols.

Tomorrow comes Clay’s first all-original CD since his debut, “On My Way Here.” This CD marks the first time RCA records allowed Clay to truly pick everything himself. The result is supposed to be something less pop and more orchestral, with a little hint of R&B. It’s a kind of throwback album, without actually singing standards.

Clay, who described himself as a square peg and Barry Manilow II, says that if it fails to sell, he has no one to blame but himself.

I was always a Clay Aiken fan, so I intend to pick it up tomorrow. But, I’m pretty much a square peg myself.

To read more about the album, you can check out this article from Clay’s home town, Raleigh, N. Car.

The woman that made Simon blush

OK, so apparently it is for real. Simon’s first kiss, at age 9, was with Tara Miller, now Tara McDonald Smith.

And apparently, before all the “Idol” madness really got going several years ago, he listed her as his first love in an interview.

Smith, who now lives in Petaluma, Calif., has been swept up into the tabloid limelight since her call to Simon on Wednesday night’s episode, which apparently some girlfriends put her up to.

She’s hoping for a future meeting with Simon, and is ready for a second kiss.

Incidently, that first kiss was the result of a game of spin the bottle. She was 8 at the time.

You can get the rest of the scoop in this report from her local newspaper, The Press Democrat.

I’ll miss Brooke White

I’ll miss Brooke. I really will. I especially like her when she’s at the piano, and I think that should be the idea behind any album she records. But I also liked her personality and her constant smile.

And I really can’t understand why, other that the supposed “cuteness” factor, Jason Castro escaped the bottom two.

But the results are what they are, and I can’t change them. So looking ahead, we’re still on a path to the battle of the Davids, Syesha’s fantastic arrangement of “Thank the Lord for the Night Time” kept her deservedly alive, and next week will feature songs by artists in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. David Cook should definitely get a chance to shine.

Three things struck me as interesting as I watched last night’s results show. First was the absolutely lame attempt by Ryan to cover up Paula’s gaffe Tuesday night. Apparently, the “rumors” aren’t true, and the slip was all a result of the judges being poorly informed about the format Tuesday night. “We love Paula, and she’s here to stay,” was the gist of what Ryan had to say. So were these untrue rumors the ones about her being stoned on the show (which is what I heard), or were they about her getting kicked off the show (which better fits Ryan’s comment)? That’s a stumper.

Second was the bizarre phone call from Simon’s first crush. The whole thing was almost too funny to be true, as if it were staged. That’s another stumper.

And finally, there was Neil Diamond’s performance, which was better than I expected it to be. Let’s face it: His voice has not held up well over the years. But he has covered for it by limiting the range of that new song. What most interested me were the lyrics of the song. Diamond is, or at least was, Jewish. Yet, while not specifically mentioning Christ, the song used several words that most fit a Christian context: amazing grace, faith, forgive, save, and several others. I kept thinking throughout that I could sing this in my church. Has Diamond converted? Does anyone out there know?

I realize that the presence of those words does not prove a conversion. But I thought the complete prominence of them and the large group of them throughout the song was interesting.

Permalink | Comments (0) | Post your comment | Categories: Discussion

Please, let it be Jason

After singing a “mini-concert” of Neil Diamond tunes last night, the contestants gave us a clear picture of who needs to go and who needs to stay.

Simon is probably right that Syesha is in trouble, because her fan base has traditionally been smaller, but the one who needs to go is Jason Castro.

I realize he is our home-state boy and is an Aggie student, but it’s time to let him get back to class.

His two songs last night were forgettable, and that’s being kind. “Forever in Blue Jeans” suffered from bizarre octave changes. Either he didn’t think he had the range to do the whole thing in one octave, or he thought he’d show off his lower notes, but whatever the reason, it was VERY weird. “September Morn” was extremely pitchy, and I’m not sure he ever got into the right key until the key change for the final chorus. It was flat, both musically and performance-wise, and deserving of dismissal.

For the others, Brooke did quite well on “I Am…I Said,” after singing a song that really wasn’t a Brooke song for her first number, “I’m a Believer.” It was in tune and she obviously had fun, but it’s not a song that suits her. She’s lucky she got a second chance.

Syesha deserves another week if for no other reason than she turned “Thank the Lord for the Night Time” into a bona fide dance number, with R&B inflection and a hint of Cuban tones. In a season where some of the guys have successfully rearranged songs to show their chops, Syesha became the first girl to do it, and she did it with flair. Once she’s finally let her personality show and quit trying to sing things the way Whitney Houston would sing them, she’s revealed her inner star.

And the Davids kept on their path to the finals, both using their skills for arranging. I thought Little David missed his mark a little in that he didn’t choose one slow song to exercise his runs on, but his total rearrangement of “Sweet Caroline” was indeed hot and “America” was fun.

Big David made “I’m Alive,” one of Diamond’s more recent and techno-inspired songs, into an even faster rock anthem. I was unfamiliar with “All I Really Need Is You,” but David made me want to get familiar with it.

So all in all a pretty good night. The Davids kept their place at the top, and Jason showed why it’s time for him to go.

Thank the Lord for the night time

It’s Neil Diamond night, and I for one can hardly wait. Neil is one of the greatest and most prolific songwriters of the last 50 years. He has songs that are very much pop, a few that border on rock, a couple with a country lean, and even some more recent techno sounds. In short, there is something for everyone.

I am assuming that since we are down to five contestants, they’ll each sing two songs, as in previous seasons. If that pans out, here is what I’d like to hear from each contestant (in alphabetical order) tonight:

David Archuleta — “The Story of My Life” and “He Ain’t Heavy…He’s My Brother” Jason Castro — “Crunchy Granola Suite” and “Done Too Soon” David Cook — “America” and “Red, Red Wine” Syesha Mercado — “Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show” and “September Morn” Brooke White — “I Am…I Said” and “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”

How about you? Any thoughts on what each contestant should sing?

Carly Smithson and the huge tattoo

We’ve commented around the Trib for weeks that the huge tattoo on Carly’s arm was costing her support and that she’d be better off wearing sleeves every week.

But how many people have wondered if the girl’s face on her arm was somebody in particular? I know I have.

Rumors included that the tat was actually a rendering of British rock star Amy Winehouse, but according to this interview with Smithson, that’s not true.

Smithson claims that because the tattoo is currently only black and white, it might look like Winehouse, but it is actually a rendering of a photo she has of a geisha. She claims she had it done two years before Winehouse became a hit.

Then she goes on to say that once it’s colored in, with the all white face and red lips, it will be clear it’s a geisha. She just hasn’t had time to get it fixed during the “Idol” madness.

My question: If it’s more than two years old, what happened to all that time for coloring it in? Even Andrew Lloyd Webber thought it was Winehouse. Are we being sold a bill of tattoo goods?

David Cook ready to release album? You bet!

OK, we’ve been saying around the Trib office for weeks now that Big David could release an album today. Randy Jackson even agreed with us last week.

So David’s gone ahead and done it.

According to this report, David’s 2006 album, “Analog Heart” is the No. 1 downloaded album on iTunes this week, beating out Mariah Carey’s “E=MC2.”

Th album apparently didn’t generate much buzz back in the day, but David has re-released it digitally, and thereby bypassed BMG’s first right of refusal on all “Idol” work.

All that vocal talent and brains too? What a deal!

I might just have to go download it myself.

End result: Still on target for finals

Let me begin by saying I shall not shed a tear to see Carly gone. In fact I’m thrilled that the music of Neil Diamond will be spared her interpretation. He is, after all, one of my favorite singer-songwriters of all time, and she is, well, not.

But I think we all know that Brooke got lucky to survive the week. Not only did she survive, but she escaped the stools all together, which was a bigger shock. Votefortheworst.com must have really come through on that one.

And I’m betting she knows most of Neil’s songbook already, and she won’t have a lyric meltdown next week.

Another shock was that Syesha was stooled. There is ABSOLUTELY NO reason she should have been sent there this week. Her performance could not have been better, and it was just wrong to send her there this week.

Jason should have been there — and he knew it too. He was already campaigning not to have to sing “Memory” again. This was after he yawned on camera backstage while waiting for the results. His appeal is wearing thin on me.

But with all that said, we’re still on track for the showdown of the David in four weeks. And I think David Cook is looking forward to it. You can see it in the way he’s gently “big-brothering” David Archuleta.

And I for one can hardly wait to see it pan out!
