WISD superintendent gets $4,000 bonus

Saturday, June 20, 2009

Waco schools Superintendent Roland Hernandez received a $4,000 bonus but no raise in salary when the school board extended his contract for another year during a meeting Thursday night.

“We’re clearly looking forward to bigger and better things in the future and looking forward to working with you,” said school board President Allen Sykes to Hernandez.

The Waco Independent School District board of trustees extended Hernandez’s contract through 2012, one year past its current date, and left Hernandez’s base salary at $174,000.

The board also voted to award him $4,000 in bonuses. He received $1,000 for academic achievement and student performance out of a possible $2,000. He got the maximum $1,000 bonus for finances, and he was awarded $2,000 for community and staff relations out of a possible $2,000.

Hernandez actually wasn’t eligible for a base salary increase this year, a decision that was made last summer by the board. Last June, Hernandez’s pay was bumped by $15,000, and he received $8,500 in bonuses, largely because of his role in helping to get the $172.5 million bond issue passed.

Hernandez’s base salary will be up for a possible review or increase in the summer of 2010. Hernandez also is poised to pick up a one-time, $40,000 “longevity” payment if he stays with Waco ISD until 2013, or a lesser amount for a shorter period.

The school board also heard an update on the possible expansion of the Waco High School cafeteria. Detailed talk of an expansion came up recently when the school board approved Waco High’s move to become a closed campus at lunch, which means that students won’t be allowed to venture off campus for food.

Kerri Ranney, an associate with PBK architectural firm, which is working on many of the district’s construction projects, said the capacity of the cafeteria could be increased to seat 700 students and serving lines increased to four. Ranney said the project could be under way throughout the school year and be ready for the next year.

Trustee Alex Williams was concerned about what the expansion will cost and whether it will go beyond the amount the district has budgeted for projects using money from the $172.5 million bond issue. Ranney said she doesn’t have cost figures yet.

Maybe JUST maybe - the parents of these GREAT STUDENTS at WISD should get more involved and BE PARENTS! I cannot figure out why it is "COOL" to have your pants half down your butt and want to take the easy way out of an education - WAKE UP WACO/AMERICA!

I do not understand why our sociaty has to pull a card that has been stuck in the deck for years.
Most people whom live and work together are not of the same ethnic or economical back ground.
The Texas school system has flaws that we need to take action and speak up about.
If you pay school taxes, you are able to voice the opinion of the people you represent.
Use all chanels of your choice to make these things happen.

It seems to me whenever a MINORITY holds office at any level, they are totally scrutinized on all aspects of what another one has demolished, prior to them taking office. ususally a caucasian individual. The question(s) become: What was it like prior to the person taking over and what difference has that person made today? I believe that should be the concerns. Another thing to thing about; Did the extra books that were needed disappear prior to him taking office? Or did the prior person take them with his/herself? A perfect example BUSH totally messed up the world and OBAMA is getting the blame. Each time OBAMA puts forth a solution...the response...oh he is going to break the country. how can one break something that is already broken. Yet, we have not heard the BUSH backlash. However, we have heard how the RICH is pissed because of all the deeds they were able to do under the past administration. My suggestion: EVERYONE should open their eyes and become open to all people.

WISD is having to put a fence around the school to keep kids there to learn and he gets a bonus for academic achievement? They have to photocopy lessons because there aren't enough books to go around and he is getting a bonus? WISD has the highest drop-out rate in the area and he is still getting a bonus? The teachers teach for chicken feed and yet he is still getting a bonus?
Kris I probably COULD do his job for what he makes. What I COULD NOT do is the teachers job for what they make. This is absolutely nauseating.

Thats good Maybe Dr. Hernandez will be able to pay his property taxes on time this year. Look back at the 2007 county tax info and at the same time he was promoting a raising our taxes with bond issue he and his wife (also a DR.) were delinquent in paying their own property taxes.

Get Real.. My kids are out of the WISD, most families that can afford to either do private schools , or Midway like WISD spokesman Dale CAFFEY. ACTION SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS WHEN THE SPOKESMAN FOR THE DISTRICT PUTS HIS CHILDREN IN MIDWAY!!!

THERE IS A REASON I LIVE IN BELTON AND DRIVER TO WORK IN WACO EVERY DAY. THE REASON IS THAT MY TWO CHILDREN WILL RECIEVE A QUALITY EDUCATION. NIETHER WISD OR MISD CAN COME CLOSE TO THE EDUCATION LEVEL IN BELTON.

Wake up, you obviously haven't woken up completely this morning. Who in their right mind would transfer into WISD? If any one does, it would have to be for the possibility of getting into the athletic program and maybe getting an athletic scholarship. I believe WISD poor performance over the years also knocks Waco out of a potential company's line of sight. Who wants to willingly send their kid to a poor performing school? Midway is coming right along in the atletic dept now also. What does being economically disadvantaged or skin color have to do with it? Are you trying to say that MISD ranks better because it is majority white? That's an insult to people everywhere. Being economically disadvantaged doesn't prevent a person from getting educated. Do you know how many millionaires grew up dirt poor? I will say this. What I like about MISD is that the teachers and everybody seem to do their jobs. It's not perfection, but people actually try to do their jobs. I think most people appreciate that. It's a big difference between putting out an effort, and not putting out any effort. It doesn't matter what the size of the district is. If that's the case, why didn't WISD go out and recruit their superintendent only from large districts? Wake up, you need to stop fooling yourself and realize that things aren't going well for WISD. Maybe you need to stop yapping and get to googling. Better yet, just open your eyes. I will move when I get ready. I'm on a mission trying to get a masters.

Maybe he should propose another big tax increase so he can get another big bonus.

A $40,000 bonus for staying until 2013? What do you want to bet he'll be gone by 2014. I'm with most of the rest of you, you couldn't pay me a million bucks to do his job.

Turn around? New schools, new programs, higher scores, and better salaries since Dr. Hernandez arrived. He has done more in his 3 years than the others in their 5. The district did not get into the shape it was in overnight, and I believe he is turning it around. The comment about Mr. Lancaster is ridiculous. A district with 25% or less of disadvantaged children , majority white, with less than 5000 students, and still can't reach exemplary? Shows the high expectations Whitfield has. If MISD were as wonderful as Whitfield claims, there would not be the hundreds of students transferring out of MISD to attend WISD schools. Admit it! No one comes close to offering the great programs we have in WISD. All of you should do some research before flapping your mouths. You all are the real jokes. Our area would be better off without all of you.
