The Waco Civic Theatre will host a play writing workshop and auditions for the theater’s season-opening production of “Plaza Suite” in separate events this weekend.

The Texas Dramatists Playwriting Workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the theater, 1517 Lake Air Drive. Baylor University theater professor Marion Castleberry, one of Texas Dramatists’ founders, said the organization and its workshops are meant to encourage new plays by providing readings and critical input.

Previous workshops have taken place in Tyler and Brenham. Saturday’s workshop, open to the public, will feature five to six new plays and volunteer readers are welcome. Those interested in participating as readers can contact the theater at 776-1591.

Auditions for the Waco Civic Theatre’s production of “Plaza Suite,” which opens Sept. 7, will take place from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the theater, 1517 Lake Air Drive, with callbacks on Tuesday. Dave Verdery will direct the Neil Simon comedy.

Roles are available for three men and three women who can play adults in their late 40s or early 50s, and three men and three women who can play adults in their mid 20s or early 30s. Those auditioning will be assigned to read with an ensemble of actors; no individual monologues are needed for auditioning.

To schedule an audition time, contact the theater at 776-1591 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. weekdays.
