The {254} Dance Fest celebrates its sixth year Oct. 6-8 with more than a dozen participating companies, nearly 200 adult and youth dancers and at least one act that tries to defy gravity: an aerial dance demonstration by Austin’s Blue Lapis Light company.

L. Brooke Schlecte, dance festival organizer and founder of Waco’s Out On A Limb Dance Company, said the festival, held at the Waco Convention Center as a sub-festival at the Waco Cultural Arts Fest, is gaining state-wide attention and audience support.

“I’m getting the feeling that a lot of Texas dance professionals are looking forward to it. I feel like it’s gaining momentum,” she said. “Last year almost every show was filled.”

The festival not only brings samples of professional dance to Waco, but provides training and demonstrations for young dancers. The festival schedule demonstrates the latter with workshops Oct. 6 and 7 in dance improvisation, contemporary dance, partnering, contemporary jazz and aerial dance, the latter provided by Blue Lapis Light.

Kids get their moment early on with a 10 a.m. Oct. 6 dance event that starts the festival. Public performances include an outdoor dance improvisation at noon Oct. 7, and shows at 5 and 7 p.m. Oct. 7, the latter show recommended for mature audiences. A family-oriented performance, which will feature many young local dancers, takes place at 2 p.m. Oct. 8.

Performances are free with a $5 charge for workshops.
