Edwards fires a first shot at Flores
By Michael W. Shapiro
Forty-eight minutes after the polls closed Tuesday, the Associated Press called the runoff race for the Republican nomination for the Congressional District 17 seat for Bill Flores, a retired oil and gas executive who calls Bryan home.
Exactly 11 hours later U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, the Democratic incumbent, released a video (click here to watch, below), in which he referred to Flores as a millionaire, "Houston oil executive" who "has never once voted in a general election in our district — not even once."
Flores' campaign manager Matt Mackowiak fired right back, calling Edwards a "career politician" and stating that "Edwards didn't even wait 12 hours to begin desperately attacking, cynically suggesting that a person's vote can be bought."
Mackowiak also said that Edwards didn't state his vision or speak to his voting record and the Flores spokesman said Edwards has voted for higher taxes, federal bailouts, the stimulus and two budgets that have led to an increase in the country's debt. He didn't respond to Edwards pointing out that he hasn't voted in a general election in the district.
Megan Jacobs, the newly hired spokeswoman for Edwards, disputing the assertion that Edwards started the mud-slinging.
"Mr. Flores has been running his non-stop negative campaign against Chet for over three months now, so it strains Mr. Flores' credibility to complain about Chet making two factual points, and it says a lot that Mr. Flores' misleading negative response never even challenged the fundamental truth of Chet's points."
Flores has said he retired to the Bryan-College Station area in 2006, but he missed the November 2008 vote because he was tied up in meetings in Houston, where he ran an oil and gas exploration company. The issue was brought up earlier by Flores' GOP opponent Rob Curnock.
Edwards has also previously defended his votes for the stimulus (which he's said was needed to spur the sinking economy) and the bank bailouts (which he said averted an even greater economic crisis, and which was supported by many Republicans including President George W. Bush and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell)
Edwards also made clear in his release that he'd be running on what he's accomplished in terms of economic development for the district and what he's done for veterans and military families as chairman of the Appropriations Committee's subcommittee for Military Construction and Veterans Affairs.
"Washington insiders..." Can Chet really use that line, being that he is a Washington insider?
Hey there EYES. What company are you talking about? What you should be wondering about are the corporate ties of Mr. Flores. Who does he owe for favors? Rich and oil man should never be viewed as the kind of qualities we look for in our representatives. If you, too are a rich oil man or some other corporate tycoon then I could understand why you might want to side with a guy like Flores. So, are you? Are you in the top 1% that controls 70% of the wealth? If you're not, do you think that the status quo is okay? At this point any working class man or woman who votes republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders. Chet will look out for the few of us left in the ever shrinking middle class.
CHET, IT'S THE COMPANY YOU KEEP.
Does not anyone remeber where Mr. Edwards lived before he ran for Congress. He moved into the the District to run after Rep. Leath, decided not to run, due to personal reasons. Its seems most ironic Mr. Edwards would talk about someones residency.
Sorry, Chuck. I didn't realize Houston was in our district. Do you think Nancy Pelosi is a hottie?
great news! its sad when the news reports only cover what names one candidate called the other, no news as to what they have done but only how nasty they can talk about each other. great reporting!!!
chuck, where have you been? There are numerous alternatives to help us get off saudi oil and use our reserves until our infrastructure has been changed over to green fuels. our rivers and waterways have enough energy to supply our country with 90% of its power and thats just from rivers. we also have wind, solar, geothermal, tidal, biomass. I do find it weird that we can comment on blogs and not articles, even though they still delete comments regularly, which just proves they can monitor the articles just fine, but they dont want to. we dont need to drill new reserves
What is it that conservatives agree upon? Why would you line up with the rich, if you are not rich? Is it the hope that one day you will be rich? Are you a social conservative? If so then you must be rational and realize that to be united country you must be willing to compromise. It is likely that just as many people disagree with your social mores than agree with. Holding extreme values does little aside from creating black and white situations and demonizing alternatives. I have a suspicion that regardless of who is in office, the loudest complainers will still complain. Your personal situation in life is a direct reflection of the actions you have taken. Take responsibility for where you are in life and stop being bitter. Life is beautiful if you allow yourself to live.
You are correct Michael in that oil will not always be plentiful but until we have an alternative, we need to develop all the oil resources that we have instead of sticking our head in the sand and continue to be at the mercy of the likes of Saudi Arabia. We also need a man who actually represents the needs and wishes of the 17th district instead of a lapdog for Nancy Pelosi. Surely you remember that she was pushing for Chet to be Obama's running mate. Only when Chet realized that he was in deep political trouble did he oppose the current administration's socialistic agenda!
Bill Flores will do a great job in Congress. You can count on his conservatism. I believe he would work to kill bad legislation instead of waiting til the last minute to even decide what his position is! Go Flores!
Many Americans go about their daily lives under the false assumption that water and oil will forever be cheap and plentiful. This is the foundation of the current model of prosperity that is in truth nothing but a house of cards. This assumption permeates every aspect of American life. The last person we need in Washington is another oil man. Wasn't eight years of Bush enough? We desperately need leadership that can work with either side of the party lines. We need someone like Chet Edwards. The REAL problems we face are so much scarier than any of the hot button issues Republicans use to rile up the voters. Let's try to keep an eye on the big picture. Another Washington NO-vote will not help this nation or this district. Chet is the best bet.
