Chuck Wilson picks up endorsement
By Michael W. Shapiro
The (Bryan-College Station) Eagle endorsed Waco congressional hopeful Chuck Wilson Sunday. The Eagle is the second-largest paper in terms of readership in the 17th Congressional District — which stretches from Aggieland through Waco and up to Burleson — and the largest paper that's endorsing primary candidates. (The Tribune-Herald ed. board is keeping its powder dry for now. Click here for candidate forum story.)
The endorsement may be notable for a number of reasons, but it sticks out to me because Wilson is not from the Bryan-College Station area, while three of his opponents are. The paper's support could give the former CIA agent and now Waco residential developer some help in an area outside of Wilson's backyard.
The paper's editorial board praised Wilson's "sharp grasp of the issues" and "practical approach to addressing the nation's problems."
The editorial states that the breadth of Wilson's experience, an intel gatherer and a businessman, was icing on the cake.
The Eagle endorsed Chet Edwards in 2008 when he was running against Waco small businessman Rob Curnock. (During the 2010 election cycle Curnock and one of the Aggieland candidates, Texas A&M professor and homeland security expert Dave McIntyre may have hurt their chances of winning the Eagle endorsement, choosing did not sit down with the ed. board.)
Your loss JH, wilson can't beat mcintyre! They're both good guys but I'll take the man with current knowledge and experience plus a history of serving the country before himself! I just didn't feel like wilson was as articulate or thoughtful as mcintyre at the debates. Seemed to be reading off a scripted set of talking points instead of answering the questions. Plus mcintyre answered a question I sent to his website the next day! That's responsivness I want in my candidate. For me it was really between those two and in the end I voted for mcintyre.
I don't if Wilson is broke or not, but I am sure voting for him. I heard all of the candidates speak on the Mark Davis show yesterday and Wilson has the edge over the others. I also went to a debate forum in Hillsboro in January and thought Wilson was on track. The radio interview sealed it for me.
Chuck would be a decent choice ..... but what a wasted vote. He has no backing. Remember last time around? Curnock spend $122,000 ....... and got creamed. Wilson is broke, not opinion, public record.
Hey, Waco Tribune? Why not do a little actual reporter work? Curnock campaign says they were not contacted by the Eagle... I emailed the McIntyre website and they say the same thing. So how about you call the Eagle and investigate why they endorsed anyone without having spoken to all the candidates? Sounds like a pretty huge breach of journalistic ethics to me. No story here? Come on... this is your job as a newspaper.
Just for the record, after a thorough review with every person working in my campaign offices, we can find no record of receiving a written or telephonic invitation to an editorial board with the Eagle. The Eagle has my personal cell phone number - I have spoken to their reporters on other stories. Not sure why nobody called that number if they thought my campaign did not respond. Not sure where the breakdown was. Maybe one of my folks did take a message and forgot. Maybe the Eagle called the wrong number. But I have talked with many reporters during this campaign and am eager to expand the dialogue. Unfortunately, in this case, I never got a chance to engage.
The Eagle also endoresed Obama so who cares? And SL, Mcintyre "has been a government employee his entire life?" The man spent a career in the Army, and while they are technically the government it's not exactly easy self-serving work. He was an Airborne Ranger and recon man, not an office worker. You don't need to vote for him but how about show a little respect. Typical for a Chuck supporter, want to lie about his finances next? You guys play dirty and it won't work.
Spoke today with the Curnock campaign and they were not contacted by the Eagle. Haven't heard back from Mcintire.
SL: agreed. Mcintyre has the resume, but he acts even more arrogant and entitled than Chet does! Don't even get me started on his anger problem...
Bill: I agree. Chuck Wilson is a brilliant guy. He'd be a great nominee. It's just too bad that he has no money and no support. Curnock is definitely the class clown in the race. What type of person makes it his main point to mention that he's a three time loser?
Chuck Wilson is a bright light in a dark room. If you have ever had the opportunity to talk with him or hear him express his ideas you would support him. He brings knowledge, experience and the desire to represent the people of District 17. BTW --- Curnock has tried and failed 3 times. He cannot beat Chet in November!
Professor McIntire did not go to editorial board meeting because he probably thinks he is too good for it. If you have ever heard him speak - he speaks down to people as if he is lecturing them. He is an elitist and as a government employee for his entire life he will not cut spending he will increase it.I wonder if he belongs to a union as a professor?
Too bad McIntyre and Curnock didn't take the time or make an effort to respond to the Eagle. And I disagree, the Eagle probably won't endorse Edwards in the Fall...I think they are endorsing in the Primary because they have finally found a candidate that is the right man for the job. That would be Mr. Wilson.
Chuck Wilson is a great choice for congressman. It is important for congressmen to have a good, working relationship with the news media in their district. Meeting with editorial boards is a big part of that. It takes some intestinal fortitude to go through that kind of scrutiny. Editorial boards are pretty good about making sure the candidates receive their requests for a meeting. These other gentlemen must not have responded to those requests. Wilson, Flores and Delasandro apparently did.
I don't understand why the Eagle would endorse someone in this race without bothering to even talk to the two strongest candidates, Curnock and Mcintire. I have emailed both of their campaigns from their web sites ... they are easy to find and they respond pretty quickly. They really should do some reporting and actually talk to the candidates, or get out of the endorsing business. It is their responsibility to their readers to do a careful evaluation of candidates. Of course, since they will no doubt endorse Chet Edwards again this fall, perhaps they want the weakest candidate up against him that they can find, which makes Wilson a perfect fit.
