Waco High, University vie for Golden Can prize

Football season may be over, but Waco High and University never miss a chance to engage in some friendly competition.

The Golden Can Competition, which began in 2010, is a food drive competition held between the Waco High and University football teams in an effort to stock the shelves of Waco Caritas for Christmas. The teams spent two weeks going door-to-door, collecting money and borrowing food from their own homes to contribute to team-specific totals.

Last year belonged to the Trojans. University nearly doubled up Waco High in food raised in 2010, but the Lions struck back by edging University by 22 pounds this year. Both teams collected about 800 pounds of food that was presented to Caritas on Wednesday.
