University boys take aim at 8-4A

By Will Parchman

It was always the plan for University to open District 8-4A with a 2-0 record, but the way the Trojans have done it has been doubly impressive.

University wiped out defending district champ Killeen on its home floor Friday and then routed 17-5 Stephenville 69-54 on Tuesday in another lopsided road win. The Trojans finally get their home district opener tonight in a colossal battle with fellow 2-0 Midway.

University can take a firm grasp of the district by beating three playoff hopefuls on three straight game nights. And they finally get one at home at 6:30 p.m. tonight.

"We knew our backs were going to be up against wall, but our kids found a way to pull it out," University coach Rodney Smith said of the road wins.

Ray Washington has been the linchpin, scoring 21 points in each of the Trojans' district wins. But there's been consistency across the board, with Calvin Richardson (10.0), Adonis Haven (14) and Kendrick Williams (9.5) all averaging solid numbers in district.

"We've got them at home and one of our big things is we've got to protect our home floor," Smith said of the Midway game. "It's going to be a really exciting game."
