Reicher girls struggle through district play
By Brian Bateman
For Reicher, it’s more of the same in TAPPS District 2-4A.
The Lady Cougars sport just a 1-4 record in league play, but coach David Hurtado doesn’t count his squad out.
“We’ve got to put four quarters together. We’ll have one bad quarter and that gets us down a little bit scorewise,” he said.
Reicher (10-12 overall) lost, 60-32, to district leader Tyler T.K. Gorman — the No. 2 team in the state — on Tuesday. Cedar Hill Trinity Christian is also undefeated, but “everyone else keeps beating each other,” Hurtado said, leaving two more spots wide open in the playoff race.
“We need to work on breaking the press. A lot of these teams like to go baseline to baseline,” he said. “If we can get one of the next two, we should be in good shape” for the second round of playoffs.
Part of that will be getting Kaila Lancaster back on track. She averaged 12 points last season, but has struggled through the start of district.
“She hit 14 the other night. I think she’s getting her confidence back,” Hurtado said.
Reicher faces Trinity Christian and Tyler All Saints in its next two games.
