McGregor girls turn up heat in 16-2A race
By Will Parchman
McGregor made the District 16-2A race a lot more interesting on Tuesday.
The Lady Bulldogs (9-4, 2-1) handed No. 19 Bruceville-Eddy (15-1, 2-1) its first loss of the year in a 59-48 road win. The Lady Eagles looked unstoppable for portions of the season, but McGregor led the entire way and launched themselves back into the race for the district title.
Now Crawford leads the district at 3-0. McGregor faces the Lady Pirates on Jan. 6.
“We put up a game plan that kind of helped us shut down (Whitney) Doyen, (Shelby) Friudenberg and (Stormi) Call,” McGregor coach Kim Johnson said. “Call lit it up a little bit, but I think our defensive strategy was good. It helped that our kids shot the lights out.”
McGregor was defensively sound, but the offense enjoyed its best game of the season. Kayleigh Ripley scored 17 points on 77 percent shooting and the tight-lidded offense turned it over just 13 times. And Johnson said she kept alive her streak of never losing to Bruceville-Eddy in her six years at McGregor.
“My kids rose to the challenge,” Johnson said. “To win at Bruceville-Eddy was even bigger for us.”
