Crawford unsettled after blowout loss
By Jason Orts
If a 36-0 loss to McGregor taught Crawford anything, it’s that the Pirates aren’t set as a team yet.
But that’s nothing new.
Coach Delbert Kelm said that even when Crawford won a state championship in 2004, the Pirates evaluated their lineup week-to-week based on how they were going to defend their opponents and made changes accordingly.
“We are still searching, and we’ll probably make some changes this week,” Kelm said. “We’re not a set football team. I don’t know if we ever will be a set football team.”
Kelm was also quick to point out that falling to McGregor wasn’t the end of the world, mainly because the Bulldogs are “a darn good team,” and that the biggest key is the Pirates have two games left to get ready for district.
“(Former Brownwood coach) Gordon Wood used to say a loss in nondistrict isn’t the end of the earth, depending on how you played in that loss and how you respond to it,” Kelm said.
