UPDATED 12:45 p.m.: Fat Ho Burgers draws huge crowd in Waco

By Amy Starnes

UPDATED (12:45 p.m. March 24):

Fat Ho Burgers, 11th Street and Ross Avenue, has drawn attention from all over Texas and elsewhere. The attention is so much so that a line formed out the door of the restaurant today and spilled into the street.

Inside, the line weaved through diners packing indoor tables. The hurried crew flipped and grilled as fast as they could, but fair warning if you are planning a quick jaunt to the burger joint just to see what it's like, lunch is not a wise time to go if you are on a tight schedule.

I stopped by to collect the business' phone number -- a highly sought-after commodity mind you because when people can't call the original ho, they call me. The number, according to an employee there, is 548-9593. Now, whether they can stop flipping burgers long enough to answer the phone, that may be another matter.

PREVIOUS POST (Tuesday, March 22):

Fat Ho Burgers, 11th Street and Ross Avenue, opened to decent crowds and lots of chatter today.

Owner 23-year-old Lakita Evans could be seen working hard in the kitchen to process orders as diners munched on or waited for their 'Hos.' Yes, Evans calls the burgers and sandwiches "Hos."

Evans came under fire from a group of residents outraged at the name of her business. Others found it funny. Read the full Tribune-Herald story here. I blogged about the restaurant's name and impending opening after Trib reporter Michael Shapiro found the new business on a recent drive to work. You can read comments of what many community members had to say here.

Fat Ho's offers a wide variety of food from burgers to chicken sandwiches to ribs, nachos, country fried steak, quesadillas, hot wings and breakfast items like pancakes and eggs.

You can order items like a Supa Fly Ho with Cheese, the Sloppy Ho Brisket or a Fat Chicken Ho. There are even "Tiny Ho Meals," sure to raise parents' eyebrows. The Mexican items are perhaps a nod to three painted mariachi singers who can still be seen on one of the walls from when the restaurant had a different theme.

Ronnie Garrison of Dallas waited for his Ho outside the restaurant. He said he was visiting friends in Waco when he received a flyer about the burger joint. A self-proclaimed food critic, Garrison commented that the prices at Fat Ho's were in line with the current economic situation and the neighborhood.

The vast majority of items are in the $3 to $4 range, with the most expensive item being a half slab of ribs with ranch-style beans and mash for $11. Fat Ho's also offers a $1 menu.

The restaurant will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily except Sundays, workers said.

Read Wednesday's Tribune-Herald for a full story on what diners had to say about their Fat Ho experience.

The REAL website is http://www.FatHoBurgers.com designed by a local company called HOT Marketing Partners. I called the guy and he said he'd been offered several thousand dollars for the domain name and refused to sellit. His only interest was REALLY protecting the owner from vultures looking to capitalize. His only request was that he be considered to design their web site and it looks like he got it. Yes, shirts are for sale on the REAL website. The guy at HOT marketing sounds like a stand up guy and does nice quality work for anyone in Waco who would like a web site.

It's completely no matter how the restaurant is called. It polarizes and we talk about it. Got it? This woman does everything right, and it would have earned an Oscar. By the way, I like the name very much. It is very funny and I could not order a hamburger without laughing. :) She deserve a chance. Just hope that the food tastes good. Many greetings from Switzerland.

Well I finally got to the front of the line after waiting two hours and recieved my Fat Ho Burger, IT WAS TERRIBLE. The meat was over cooked and my bun was straight out the package. Then my order was completely wrong, I asked for mayo with everything on it hold the tomatoes and guess what "no mayo and plenty tomatoes." Then to make maters worse she tries to talk to my husband (very unprofessional)when she saw usu together. I can say the fries where good, but you can get them at Wal-Mart. Never will I return there, but I wish her the best of luck.

@Margaret, I met with Lakita and talked with her this weekend regarding the website. Given the publicity she has, it was important to get a website up quickly. Yes, the site was put up much quicker than the majority of our sites, so it has incomplete information. As soon as Lakita gets me the rest of the information, it will be updated. You can check out the quality of our websites at: http://www.yellowwebmonkey.com/website-portfolio.html Someone out of town had already bought up fathoburgers.com and fathoburger.com, so as a local company I wanted to help her get up on the web.

Hi Alexis Marks, I see you are the website designer. Did you work with Lakita to get this up, or are you profiting off of Ms. Evans idea? Why would you not post accurate and complete information such as a menu or t-shirt information? Just seems so imcomplete and rushed. Is this the quality of design work that YellowWebMonkey delivers?

I love how you're a terrible person if you don't support small business or free speech.... But if you're against them both simultaneously, you're just being an upstanding American? There's no complaint about large chains like "Hooters" and "Twin Peaks". I've seen people even take their children inside. Even though there's ass everywhere and the name of the restaurant is basically just "Tits". (Yes, I've seen it. . . Sigh.). I understand that it's inappropriate. But really? Do you see uniform tables? Nice seating at all? Nice menus? . . Glasses? Uh. . . Paint on the walls? Seriously it's just some little hole in the wall place that this girl carved out for herself that these people complaining wouldn't have ever eaten at anyway even if it was called "An Angel Gets Its Wings Every Time You Eat One of These Burgers". By the way? I'm going to stop there next month when I pass through town. I will buy 2 burgers for each one of you small-minded judgmental bitches. Haters gonna hate. >)

I applaud Ms. Edwards for opening a business and taking a chance in these economic times. I love the name because it is humorous and we need to laugh sometimes and stop being so serious.I do plan to travel to Waco from Houston to try these ho's, if you will. My suggestion to the owner is think about opening in other parts of Texas (manly urban areas near college campuses). I think college students will love eating at this establishment simply because of the name. In houston, she could open one in the 3rd ward area near the UH and Texas southern campuses. Think big Lakita, do not stop just at Waco. Forget the haters!

The criticizers on here kill me. I can't believe you are all bent out of shape over a name! Hooter's objectivy women and Doobie is what you call the remnants of a joint. But I guess those are ok? Grow up and give me a break. Most of you are probably just jealous cause you didn't think of something like that so you can have some money coming in. I am from Houston and their are a couple of Asian restaurants with "Ho" in the name. If she converted to an Asian restaurant and didn't refer to various ho's on the menu, all of you would just chuckle and STFU.

Mar. 25, 2011, 1:16PM

(Report Comment)

It's not the name that offends me. It's the fact that as a black female in todays world we still feel the need to degrade ourselves to succeed. If she named it "Pretty Lady" burgers there would be no line. I think it is wonderful that she has chosen to open her own business. But why this name. A drug dealer is self employed but what he does is bad for the community. So is this name. Plenty of places have bad names but they are usually closed to children. If someone called your daughter a fat ho, would it be ok cause it's just a name. Give our children something positive...to be a rapper you must be a "Barbie", to be a female comedian you gotta have the dirtiest mouth, and to have a business you have to choose a degrading name that draws attention. You all are saying that if I name my business "Kid Toucher" it shouldn't matter cause it's just a name.

I know that "HOE" is a garden tool and "WHORE" is a person male or female that is selling their bodies for sex. You can't please everyone so Please everyone support her and maybe we can get the rest of our young people to think positive like this instead of killing, robbing and doing drugs.Way to go Lakita!!

There are plenty of places who have names and menu items like this but noone else is complaining about those. She is smart for that props to her.

It's a crying shame . . . when's the last time ANY restaurant in Waco got this much regional press? But, 99% of the people who went there today I can guarantee will never be back. A real lost opportunity.

I find it sad that Lakita did not plan to be successful. Running out of food and change and closing early during the first week of business is a sure sign that we will not have to endure her naming convention much longer. I think it is sad that Waco won't stand up for what they know is right. I think it is sad that people are complaining when a woman wants to help another woman succeed in business without using a horrible name. Its sad it takes a person born in Waco who lives so far away to be the only person to stand up and say I want to help. All of you have hidden behind anonymous names and sign-ons, but Mrs. Littleton has stood in front of her words. Which one of you will do the same? If you are so proud of the restaurant name, sign your name to your posts. If you want better for your community or for your neighborhood or for your hometown, whereever that is, stand up and speak out. Mrs. Littleton did, and I am proud of her for offering to help Ms. Evans and taking a stand for her hometown. My name is Mrs Evans, and I signed my post!

In a society where b*^-h, ni**^r, sl*t, and a myriad of other words are as common as McDonald's, don't you think we, as a society, should be more worried about what our children are learning from home and school and teaching them to respect people's differences instead of what's in a name? Teaching our children to ostracize and sterotype because of a name is part of the reason our children have the values they do now! Grow up, people, it's only a NAME...and apparently it made you notice, so her advertising is working! Congrats, to you, Ms. Evans! Starting a business is hard work, good luck to you! : D

Fat Ho Burgers did have a successful day, but this is typical Waco. A new eatery opens, and it is flooded with people for the first few months. The proof of her success will be when everything settles down and she has regular business days. It was interesting that some people will come to Waco to try it out, but say they wouldn't allow the restaurant name in their town. Even today, the good ol' Texas double standard is still in play. Ms Littleton appears out of nowhere to protest the name? She lives in L.A., one of the most corrupt cities in the country, and she says it not appropriate for Waco. Well, if Waco was so important to her, she would have stayed here, opened a successful and nationally acclaimed advertising business, and made a name for herself and the city. In other words, like so many, you didn't like Waco, you left, so butt out.

The bigger picture here is what the word "ho" denotes. Yes, it was a clever marketing strategy. Yes, she will receive plenty of business because of it, especially important during the poor economic state. However, a business has both commitments to the community as well as the profitability to the owner. By using and mainstreaming the word "ho" which means "wh*re," what are we telling the youth? We have to have more discretion and accountability Waco! Not only do neighborhoods have to worry about Baylor's gentrification, but now we are allowing something that may be the opposite...businesses that come in and lower the appeal.

Good for her. If people don't like the name they can choose to not eat there. It is NOT the business of city officials to name individuals businesses. The word is commonly used in songs that play on radio stations in Waco and throughout this country and has not been deemed as too vulgar. Vulgarity is a matter of opinion anyways and I deem it pretty vulgar for people to waste their time trying to control what another citizen names their business. It takes a creative and hardworking person to figure out a way to compete in the restaurant business, especially in this economy. I hope she is widely successful. I will be going there on my next trip through there. Actually, I think it's a good reason to make a special trip to support her and the freedom of our citizens to name their own businesses. There are so many things going on in the world that people should feel need their attention and deserve their time (poverty, inequality, economic issues, educational issues, abused and neglected children e.t.c.). The name of this burger place is not one of them.

Here we go again with this Shelley Littleton. You keep saying that you are not protesting against the restaurant, but you ARE protesting against the name! Same difference! This lovely woman is brilliant for the name and it's only going to keep bringing her more and more business! Don't you have more important things to worry about like your clients in Hollywood?? Give this woman a break and stop trying to get everyone to agree with you about changing the name! I wish Ms. Evans the BEST of luck and who said her term "Ho" was referring to prositutes? The name is not going to change & if I must, I will start a new campaign to NOT change the name! Not that she'll need it, she is already getting more business because of all the negative views people have about the place! Keep doing what you're doing Lakita Evans and I gurantee you ALL of Waco has your back! Don't bother listening to uptight people like Shelley Littleton. I say job well done! & I can't wait for Fat Ho t-shirts!!(:

If you don't like the name, then don't eat there, otherwise, get over it. It is just like the word- if you don't like it then don't use it.

Disgusted, you really need to loosen up. "Ho" is not a curse word. It is not a racial epithet. She could call her sandwiches "Sloppy Dongs" for all I care. Take a stand? Against what? Get a hobby, dude.

I am still a Dubl-R fan, but I hope to give it a try and eat there soon. This is probably the only place with a catchy name that has opened in Waco in the last 50 years.

Who cares what it is called to be honest. I dont go to a restaurant because of what it is named. I go there for the food. I can guarantee that if the name was changed to Bible Belt Burgers or Republican Burgers that the food would taste exactly the same. I applaud the young woman for thinking about a catchy name that stands out. When you are an independent business owner, you need to try and get everyone into the store. She did half of the work with creating a catchy name and decent menu. But... All the haters with their negative press has boosted this tiny restaurant into statewide news. (Remember... any press, positive or negative, is still advertising) The next time I am in Waco I will be stopping by and I am sure I am not the only one. Way go to :)

Jenn, this is off topic, but Heitmillers moved because they had to, the highway department kicked em out. Don't hate them for that.

This is not about protesting the restaurant. This is about supporting a young woman who is trying to start a business. I believe that misogyny is evil, is not funny, and I am also backing my words with support. I want Ms. Evans to succeed and I am willing to help and challenge others in the community to do the same! Lets help her reprint her menus, change her signage, build a website, design a logo, paint the building – whatever we can do to help. AMEN, Jenn!!! One of my faves was Doobie's Cajun Wings. They had the only real Cajun food in town(yes, I've eaten at Buzzard Billy's and NO, it is NOT real Cajun. It is Commercial-Cajun and there is a big difference). Doobie's couldn't survive in Waco. My heart is still broken over it. Dubl-R is one of my favorite burger joints in town, but tonight I'm having a Supa Fly Ho with Cheese tonight, and I can't wait!

@T I am looking for that to provide. It's not on their menu. And frankly I am not certain they have phone service hooked up there. But if I can find it, I will provide it.

I am going to chime in and say what I think of the name. Nothing wrong with it! And yes I'm a woman! Why should the City take a stand? I personally heard the name first and thought, great another new Asian place and then when I heard it was a hamburger joint, I thought, ok let's see IF you can give my favorite, Dubl-R, a run for the money! So I'll be there as soon as you open to support a female/down home burger joint! I remember when all the hoopla was about having Hooters here. Well I tend to not eat at chain restaurants and support local businesses as much as possible! The reason some of our best restaurants closed is because some of you think Chuy's is great so you did not eat at Siete Mares and they were FAB, same goes for Green Room Grille. I loved Heitmiller BEFORE they moved, but I'll never eat there again...it feels too much like a chain and it looks like it and its TOO Noisy. I hate a noisy restaurant! My two cents about our local restaurants and YES I am a Native and love my town, but hate that folks don't support local businesses as much as they should.

Oh my! Check out the comments in the other blog. Wow! It's not the job of city leaders to decide names of restaurants. When she files for her DBA she would be approved or disapproved. I don't think there is anything wrong with the name. It will attention to the restaurant. If we keep banning certain words from appropriate language, we might run out of words because meanings change all the time.

If this restaurant was called Fat Nword, or Fat Bword, it would not be allowed to open. Fat Ho is ok? Where is the city on this issue? Why won't the city take a stand??? City leaders, this is your job. Get your head out of the sand!!!
