Businesswoman unveils Fat Ho Burgers in Waco

By Amy Starnes

Tribune-Herald reporter Michael Shapiro uncovered a rather provacotively named new burger joint planning to open in Waco next week.

Lakita Evans is prepping her Fat Ho Burgers at the corner of South 11th Street and Ross Avenue for its opening. It already has a banner out front advertising the name.

She told Shapiro the Fat Ho name has only generated laughter from passersby, but it caused at least one civic leader to do a double-take before wishing her well.

“Oh, jeez,” said Waco city manager Larry Groth, upon first hearing the restaurant’s name. “I guess they’ll find out whether the community supports them soon,” he said, before adding the test “may be in how good the burgers are.”

Read Shapiro's full story here.

Evans, by the way, notes this town already has a Hooters and seems to question how is her name worse?

What do you think of the name? Will you go have a Fat Ho burger?

i'm from Houston. When I heard you being interviewed by the Tom Joyner show,I cracked up with laughter.I love a good joke.I also, love good food.I'm also proud of you to be so brave to open a business.I've been reading some of the blogs,if you didn't have any sense you wouldn't have saved your income, and you could have bought materialistic things, but you chosed to better your life by becoming a businesswoman. The only thing I hate is I wasn't there to help you name more HO's on the menu!!!!!By the way J. Anthony Brown suggested anyone who don't like the name call a burger the ANGRY HO BURGER!!!!I have already told your story to many of my friends and family.I also, have a lot of family members inthe Dallas-East Texas area and I will be visiting you.I'm a great cook myself and take a lot of pride in what I do.Suggestion--JUST DON"T SKIMP ON THE FOOD!!!!PEOPLE ARE DRVING TOO FAR AND THEY DON"T WANT A DOLLAR MENU AT MCDONALD'S and you will be as sucessful as any fast food chain.Be Strong,Keep the Faith,And God Bless You!!!!

Well like Hooters, it speaks of a woman body parts. Most enjoy that establishment. You have signs that display porn store"XXX RATED". You have organizations that display and call them selves" White Power" "Black Power" .... society excepts that, I think you no where I'm going. Now here you have a entrepreneur who just so happen to come across what society feels is a uncommon name for a business called "Fat Ho Burger" now someone is offended at wants to make stink about the name. Such a sensitive society we live in but its ok! For a Fat man to sit in a Big chair in December with your children in his lap and chant! "HO, HO, HO!!!!

I do not think that is where her heart is at. Bet she loves the attention!! I Have the gift of the Holy Spirit and fail more than I like to put on this note. I have no problem with this. Ok, enough about the name, what about the food???….I stopped by there yesterday and picked up two burgers to go and it was BAD, real bad! I should have checked my order before I left. One order my meat patty was so dry and burned I could not eat it, and the small amount of topping was ridiculous, the bun was not grilled just cold and they also got my order wrong, I ordered the other burger mustard cut the pickles, I got ONLY mustard with ONE pickle! Who cares what the name is, it’s the food that counts!!! Ill stick with Double R’s.

How exactly is naming a business Fat Ho Burgers degrading to women? You shouldn't care unless the shoe fits and you consider yourself that word. Lets support her and her burger (oops did I do it again)and Mrs Evans if Waco dosent want ya WE DO!!!! we need someone down here with a good burger. p.s. GO Ron Paul

Fat Ho is here to STAY!! Waco loves it! & Miss Littleton really needs to get over herself! "My clients range from Hollwood to small businesses..." yea, nobody cares! All your doing is giving her more business!! Go find something else to whine about! & times have certainly changed! This would be "degrading" to women if she it was 1950 still! Is Hooters not just as degrading, having women parade around with almost nothing on?? But it's not okay to call her restaurant what she pleases? Get over yourself. This place is here to stay, so PLEASE keep trying to convince her to change the name while the rest of Waco is on her side to keep it the same! You don't even live here anymore so why is it of any concern to you? Don't you have more important "Hollywood" clients to tend to?? Please. Stop being so uptight, we're not in the 50s anymore!

I am a career woman, a wife, and a mother(and fat myself) and I am not offended in the least. I FULLY SUPPORT FAT HO BURGER. In fact, I am having dinner there tonight.

Waco Born... Please get over yourself. You say you are in marketing right? Well, the more you push the issue the more buzz you are going to create and that is a plus for her. So go ahead and tell everyone not to eat there, you will just build curiosity up in people and they will go there to see what all the fuss is about. The word "Ho" isn't offensive when Santa says "ho ho ho" hmmm well, the title of her restaurant isn't Fat Hoe Burgers.. it is Fat Ho Burgers, get your facts straight before you even TRY to start a debate, which you are not good at LOL It is in the context of a person and how it is spelled in order it to be offensive. So don't even go there about how it is degrading women! Oh you must be one of those women who think that FEMALE truck drivers is being degraded also right? Well, I am a VERY educated female truck driver and I am not and don't feel degraded at all. By the way, next time you open your mouth think about what you are saying. Remember this, the hamburgers are good, btw! Another thing, before you judge on something do research first. She explained in an article why she named it that way. One more thing... Next time you look at a female truck driver crazy, remember this, you wouldn't have groceries in the market, no stuff on the Walmart shelves if it wasn't for truck drivers in general! even if they are female!

So no, parking won't be a factor if it is good and she gets a good fan base. Great name, lets hope the burgers are good.

I don't think misogyny is funny. I choose to say no and hope I can encourage others to donate their time and skills to help Ms. Evans change too. Ms. Evans has been desensitized by those around her to believe that this is ok, that she should not only accept degrading words thrown at her, but she should embrace them. Don't let people around you convince you that this is just a joke or that this is ok. Our mothers and grandmothers fought for the right to own businesses and to work outside of the home. Why degrade women with the choice of a business name? Why bring women down? Lets us this opportunity to build up women and young girls and show them we can do better!

I think the name is great. It is eye catching, and once you hear it, you don't forget it. I suspect she will make some of the best burgers in town. Right now, there are only about two or three places that are worth the price, so I hope she is successful. Mr. Groth's reaction as printed makes me wonder if he really knows what is going on in Waco, not just the west side and Baylor. It sometimes makes me think that city management does not have a very good handle on the city as a whole. I thought, Mr. Shapiro's article regarding Hooters and the preachers was ironic. They said that Hooters "does not represent the values that our community should espouse". And, having one of the hightest per capita crime rates and poverty rates in the State does? I don't think so. This is off topic. Maybe the city council, city management, and the plan commission ought to live in low income housing on the "wrong side of the tracks" for a while. It isn't fun for the residents, and maybe that will cure their incessant quest to surround downtown with low income housing again.

I saw this on the news last night and spit my soda out from laughing (it caught me off guard) but personally I don't see anything wrong w the name if you want to get techinical a ho is a garden tool as "hoe" is the proper term to degrade women and I'm sure Miss Evans in no way shape form or fashion meant for the name to be degrading. She just knew how to capture people's attention (bc it sure grabbed mines). I actually applaude her for thinking outside the box and thought of a rather unique different name. The name of the resturant is funny and I believe this resturant havcwe the ability to succeed if Miss Ecans know what she is truely doing and I believe she do esp if she got a strong staff behind her. I wish her the best of luck and from what I seen on the news Miss Evans look like she is a down to Earth, motherly type woman so therefore I will eat there. She should have some off the wall titles for her menu (not too vulgar or offensive but more so comedic because its different from the norm). I don't too much eat other people's cooking but I would most definately eat there just because it is what it is. Congrats Miss Evans and for those who are offended you might be the "hoe" if you aren't don't get so offended over something so little because I'm sure everyone done heard worse!

it will depend on their parking situation. if they have planned ahead or if they really think they will survive, they will have parking. If they only think a few will come and it's only a gemic, then they won't. Normally you can tell if a place is good by the amount of cars in the lot. One very big exception would be Tom's Smokehouse in Bellmead...........best BBQ and worst parking.....so go figure!

Poor, misguided, Ms. Evans. The restaurant business is very tough and only thrives on very tight margins. Most are run by very savvy business people such as Vitek's. And based on the city managers initial response she will have an uphill battle with the image she is promoting to public authority for whom do not respond kindly to promoting the degradation of any human. Opening a eating establishment as we are approaching the end of the school semester is not exactly a brilliant business plan. I am not sure who is getting punked here, but it speaks volumes about the paper that they would even publish such foolishness.

I'd eat at this place just because it has a unique name. To "Waco Born": I understand where your heart is, but if you were truly born in Waco, you would know that word-of-mouth marketing is still sufficient to transform a hole-in-the wall restaurant into a prosperous restaurant in Waco. Waco is unique in this regard -- it's almost behind the times. Take "Vitek's" for example. I've never seen a t.v. advertisement for Vitek's, yet it is one of the most popular BBQ restaurants in Waco, and is somehow expanding despite the adverse market conditions. How did I hear about Vitek's? -- Word-of-mouth on the Baylor campus. If anything, the name of the restaurant almost makes eating there a novelty, and I think that this is the effect that Ms. Evans wished to achieve when she gave the restaurant this name. She has generated a buzz with the name of her restaurant, and a considerable sum of people will likely eat there after it opens just to say that they have eaten there. The exposure that she has created with the name will attract customers, and if the customers are pleased with the food, they will likely return and even suggest the restaurant to their peers. I'm not a businessman, but this seems like a successful marketing strategy to me. Would you not agree?

(Report Comment)

I certainly have a right not to eat there and to encourage my friends not to eat there, but first I wanted to tell Ms. Evans that promoting the term "Ho" is degrading to women. Do you want your child or mother called a Ho? I did not think so. Instead of picketing after she opens, I am making my feelings known now, before she opens? Don't like my opinion? fine, then make your feelings known too! That is what America is about! If you want women called "Ho" then that reflects on you and your standards. I hope the Waco Community feels differently and respectfully asks Ms Evans to change her mind. That is all I am doing! By the way, my name is Shelley Littleton. I was born in Waco, still have friends and relatives in Waco and DO NOT SUPPORT THE DEGRADATION OF WOMEN. My group on Facebook is transparent - I am listed there too. Who are you?

Waco Born, they probably took off her address because she didn't choose to post it. Just like you didn't choose to post your address. No one wants to have their information posted without their permission. How would you like it if someone posted your home address and facebook page? And get over yourself, if you don't like the name, don't go there. How can this establishment's name impact you in any way? Do you live next door, or have a copyright on the name? If not, then you have no grounds for a complaint, especially if city officials have already given their blessing.
