Movie alert(s): 'Iron Lady,' 'Extremely Loud,' 'Descendants'
By Carl Hoover
This is the time of year I get my Most Frequently Asked Question: When will movie A (or B or C) come to Waco?
The general answers have remained the same — it largely depends on the availability of prints and the vagueries of out-of-town film bookers (who often look at Waco's lackluster box office support for non-mainstream movies) — though sometimes specific movies have specific issues.
Here's what I know, and it's primarily from Starplex Cinemas: "The Iron Lady" and "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" both open here on Friday. "The Descendants" will open Jan. 27.
No word yet on "The Artist" and "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy." I'm guessing Waco will eventually get the first, but am a little surprised the second hasn't come here already. (My wife and I went to Dallas last month to see "The Descendents" and "The Artist" — both really good films, but neither bowled me over, to be honest.)
I'll post any updates as I find them.
Saw "The Actor" in College Station last weekend and loved it! I also saw "Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy" and thought it was really good. It is disappointing that Waco does not bring quality movies to our theaters.
I was disappointed with "Extremely Loud". I LOVE Tom Hanks, and see any with him in it, but he was barely in this one (flashbacks) and the movie was weird, about a strange little boy and dealing with his grief. Not what I expected at all about 9-11.
Found out Wednesday morning what's leaving town by Friday: "My Week With Marilyn," "The Adventures of Tintin," "Carnage," "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn," "New Year's Eve" "The Sitter" and "The Darkest Hour."
