Mulkey's Mizzou praise seen as hiding OU jab
By Brice Cherry
If the postgame handshake between Baylor's Kim Mulkey and Missouri's Robin Pingeton seemed longer than usual Wednesday, that's because it was.
Mulkey could be seen chatting up Pingeton for a good 30 seconds, as Mizzou's second-year head coach smiled and nodded.
In the interview session that followed, Mulkey wasted no time sharing what she'd told Pingeton.
"That lady gets it. Why does she get it? When she clears her bench," Mulkey said. "How many coaches do you see when they're down 30 or 40 start pressing you with their starters?
"What did she do when I cleared my bench? She cleared hers. I mean, she learned from somebody who taught her the game. That's what I told her: 'Robin, you get it.' "
Mulkey wouldn't name names, but if you read between the lines, she was clearly referencing Oklahoma's Sherri Coale. In Baylor's 92-70 home win over the Sooners last year, the Lady Bears romped to a 40-point lead in the second half and still led by better than 30 when Mulkey took out her starters with about four minutes to play.
Trapping BU's backups in the backcourt, OU picked up a slew of steals and three-pointers in those final minutes to cut into the final margin.
Just for the record, Baylor's first meeting with Oklahoma this season is Jan. 26 in Norman.
Should be a fun one.
Sherri still has a winning record against Little Kim and she will always be better looking.
Oh, Trebow. You sound disapproving. Personally, I'm glad BU's coaches are self-assured and are not put off of responding to situations such as that one. Sports should go by rules of etiquette, too.
Kim is still full of herself.
And look at where that process got ya, Coale?? A loss is still a loss, whether by 22 or 40, Sherri! Like OU was gonna score 40 pts in those 4 minutes....;please..... All that kind of thinking will do is possibly get your players hurt. Mulkey has the smarts to give her bench all the playing experience she can, so that it will benefit the team down the road. Can't wait to stomp OU again this year!! Sic 'em!!
You gotta get up pretty early in the mornin' to fool ol' Mulkey!
