Geno gets standing O at Ferrell Center
By Brice Cherry
At first, Geno Auriemma didn't know what to think. It's not every day that the Connecticut coach receives a standing ovation in the other team's building.
But that's exactly what Auriemma encountered as he stepped onto the Ferrell Center floor Sunday, as the respectful Baylor crowd showered him with applause. It was similar to the reaction Tennessee's Pat Summitt generated last year.
And Auriemma appreciated it.
"People say the people down south are a lot nicer, and it showed," said Auriemma, whose second-ranked Huskies lost to No. 1 Baylor, 66-61. "I've got to tell you, it really took me by surprise. I don't know if they do that to everybody whose butt they think they're going to kick. But it's a great environment to play basketball in."
Auriemma quipped that the ovation was identical to the reaction he receives at Big East road games. Baylor coach Kim Mulkey snorted in laughter when that comment was relayed to her.
"Nah, I don't think they cheer him and give him ovations in the Big East," she said.
Gary who?
Somehow I dont think Gary Blair will get the same warm reception when A/M comes to Waco to play.
Flashback to the 12/14/10 Lady Bears vs. Tennessee game is realized upon me. After the game's conclusion, I spoke briefly with Coach Pat Summitt when she had completed her post game radio show. Wearing my Lady Bears attire, I stated that East Tennessee is my "Old Country". She obliged with her autographing my ticket stub of the Baylor vs. Tennessee game played a year earlier in my native Knoxville. Her autograph has been with me ever since.
True greatness and class gets standing O. Summit and Auriemma have it. Marsha Sharp at Tech had it. Kim has it. No one else in the Big 12 has it ...certainly not anyone else on the Brazos River. Sherri Coale may some day get it. Darrel Royal, Grant Teaff had it...Mack Brown has zero class. Briles has it. Back to WBB, it is nice to see the crowd react to the Hall of Famers.
thats right! them bayler fans shuld be nicer to us who cum and yell at there players and fans. we r allowd to do that cuz we hav tradishuns but bayler cant do that cuz there not us
Wish Baylor fans treated the opposing teams' fans the same way.
