SpaceX hosting picnic at McGregor test site

By Mike Copeland

SpaceX, which has a $1.6 billion contract with NASA to haul supplies to the International Space Station, will host a community picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in McGregor. That's where it operates a rocket-testing facility.

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk is flying in from California to attend the event, and U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, reportedly will attend, according to company spokeswoman Kirstin Grantham.

Guests will have the opportunity to view a rocket engine test. SpaceX has conducted roughly one test a day at the 630-acre facility since it began operations there in 2003.

"We want everyone to come out and enjoy the festivities. It's our way of showing the community just how much we appreciate their support," said Lauren Dreyer, director of business affairs at SpaceX.

"We will have some of the best barbecue in Central Texas," she added.

SpaceX's rocket facility is located four miles west of McGregor High School on Bluebonnet Parkway.
