Freebirds World Burrito may land in Waco
By Mike Copeland
I'm hearing more rumblings about Freebirds World Burrito seriously eyeing Waco.
One source says the California-based chain wants to place a restaurant in the shopping center at Franklin Avenue and New Road, home to Gold's Gym and Academy Sports & Outdoors. It reportedly wants a freestanding building on the parking lot.
K. Paul Holt, who oversees the local office of the Associated General Contractors of America, said he does not believe Freebirds has placed construction plans on file at the AGC headquarters on Waco Drive. But he has heard through sources that Freebirds is interested in sites along New Road.
Some people claim Freebirds makes the best burrito imaginable, and they pine for the day Waco gets one.
The chain has about 40 locations and is heavily concentrated in Texas.
Its primary offering is California-style Mission burritos or San Francisco burritos, which customers order cafeteria-style, allowing them to customize their meal by choosing burrito size and type of tortilla, then choosing its filling from a selection of meats, cheeses, beans, vegetables and sauces.
Locations also generally offer customizable salads, tacos, quesadillas, nachos and burrito bowls.
Freebirds, PF Chang and wings n more in Waco ... That would make me one happy girl!!! I'll take Freebirds for now tho ;) please be true. Oh did I forget In & Out!
Freebirds makes the best burritos and it's not even close. They should put Chipotle out of business. Less expensive, more options (size, ingredients, tortilla) and better tasting. Please let this rumor be true.
Bring it on!!!! Can't Wait!! Now all we need is a Red Robin and a Waffel House and the planets would finally align!!!!
The person that runs their Facebook page answered a comment I had posted a year ago about the good reasons to bring Freebirds to Waco. They told me back then that they were looking to possibly open one in late 2011 or early/mid 2012. I guess they weren't lying or just feeding me a line!!! Woohoo!!!! Come on!!
Aren't there enough chain-restaurants in town already? I read a study one-time that said for every dollar spent in a national chain, 18 cents stays in the community; conversely, 81 cents of every dollar stays in the community when spent at a locally-owned restaurant......
Would love it it they came here! However, this rumor has been floating around for years. I'd be shocked to see if they ever opened here.
Let's follow up Freebirds with a Texadelphia. Then bring in Kolache Factory. I'd be in restaurant heaven.
How many ways can you make a burrito? Let me count the ways.
They are the best! We stop at the one at College Station every time we get a chance! Will be a good addition to Waco.
