Droplets of random
— Has anyone else noticed how the green HEB reuseable bag has become the prefered bag of choice around town? I regularly see people walking around downtown with it slung over their shoulder. It’s kind of funny to me, because I bet some of these people, while using the green bag as a catchall or purse, are still dragging home their milk and paper towels in plastic bags.
— Is anyone else addicted to Golden’s bookstore on Franklin Ave.? Because I always take my old books there, I never pay for new ones, it’s great. But the real reason I love it is because it feeds the compulsive freak in me that loves to sort things. I have to physically restrain my self from standing in front of piles of books and grouping all the same titles, or arranging them by color of the spine. Twice now, I have almost gone up to the Golden’s folks to ask if they would mind if I did a little sorting, just for fun. But while I don’t mind being a little weird, I don’t want to actually frighten anyone with my weird love for arranging things. I’ll let y’all know if I get the nerve to ask or if I just take it upon myself to start sorting under the ruse of looking for a certain book.
— And last but certainly not least, I’m going to be in the big D for my birthday next Friday (18th) and I have a freaking awesome hotel room (Hotel Indigo). But now I’m looking for suggestions for a righteously amazing bar or restaurant downtown to hit. Any suggestions??? Come on Katie, JenA, y’all got anything?

Happy Birthday, Wendy! Maybe next time you’re in town, you can sort the stuff in my pantry. It would probably occupy you for hours, and I know you would enjoy it. ;) Hope you enjoy your birthday, seriously. I’m going to be teaching young’uns how to write newspaper articles at the local arts council’s arts and science camp next week for my birthday.

I too love Golden’s, I just wish we had more used books stores, a Half Price Books would be awesome. Anyway, I’ve stayed at Hotel Indigo and while the stay was nice, I don’t really like the fact that you have to pay to park your car everyday. That being said, some great places to go that I’ve been to as far as clubs are Purgatory and Europa. Also, Sol’s Taco Lounge is a great place to eat. For future hotel recommedations, I highly suggest The Belmont Hotel, it’s a renovated motor court style hotel from the 40’s and it’s cool beyond belief! I’ve stayed 3 times now!

I’m nuts about the Belmont! But when one of my friends dropped out of the evening, I decided to drop down a bit in price. I can’t wait to try out the B though.

I love Golden’s too! Piles of glorius books….. Did you know Beatnix Coffeehouse on Lakeshore has a free library? You can sort those books to your heart’s content and the staff and regulars won’t bat an eyelash at your OCD tendencies. It’s a cool place like that. BUY COFFEE, SAVE BEATNIX!!

Yeah that’s true the Indigo is a bit cheaper than the Belmont but all the times I’ve stayed at the Belmont have been during the summer, so I think that’s when they run their deals on rooms. That’s really cool about Beatnix, MCC is SO out of my way though.

Depends on how much or how little you want to spend. For a fairly expensive, upscale meal try. You must arrive in a vehicle for the coolest part of going. You literally drive up to an elevator at curbside and get valet service: http://www.dakotasrestaurant.com/
For much less, they do have a Chuy’s and an Iron Cactus (yes, both originally Austin restaurants).
For real low buck, the original Texadelphia has great cheesesteaks and queso with chips. You may have had it when it was in Killeen.
Or, for Italian, go to the original Campisi’s Egyptian near Mockingbird and Greenville Ave. and ask for the back room. They don’t take credit cards; priced more like olive garden.

Happy B-Day Wendy. Anywhere (and I mean anywhere) OUT of Waco is a great Birthday Party. Have a safe time in Dallas.

Wendy, check out guidelive.com for reviews of Dallas restaurants, events, etc. I use the site all the time to find new places to eat. Plus the Friday Dallas Morning News prints The Guide, which has up to the minute reviews of whatever is going on.
In terms of locations, the West End is pretty close to downtown and has loads of good restaurants and bars. We ate at Grimaldi’s recently and enjoyed an ‘upscale’ pizza. There are a lot of other choices if pizza isn’t on your birthday wish list.
Most of all, have fun when you get to big D! And have a happy birthday.

Want some atmosphere, great Italian food and a bit of D-town history? Can’t go wrong with Campisi’s Egyptian. Booths with jukeboxes!

Droplets of random? How about another random drive-by (gang-bang) shooting in East Waco? A man was shot down on Clifton (East Waco) in broad daylight yesterday. The East Waco man was shot in the neck. Waco Police have arrested no one…….the East Waco gunman is still loose with his gun to shoot-up East Waco again. The East Waco street violence continues…..this time as bullet “droplets of random”.

Thanks for the heads-up, Fred. If only the Trib had reported on that somewhere… If only they had written an actual story about that… Oh, wait…

I never understood the “fondue” thing until I went to Dallas with a group of girls. We went to Simply Fondue(reservations recommended). It was definitely worth the money. Interesting experience, and amazing food. The whole thing takes about two hours, but if you get to go, you will love it! Their website is www.simplyfondue.com

Happy Birthday! I never understood the “fondue” thing until I went to Dallas and ate at Simply Fondue with a group of girls. Reservations are recommended and it is a little expensive, but it is amazing. So worth it! We went to the one on Greenville Avenue, but I think they have another location, also. Website is www.simplyfondue.com

Yay! You’ll be in D-town! I don’t spend much time downtown, so I’m not terribly familiar. There’s a Campisi’s downtown you could hit for lunch, though.
I was thinking about true Dallas staples today, and, reading through the comments, I didn’t notice any suggestions for Matt’s in Lakewood. It’s a wonderful Mexican restaurant the fam frequents. If you go, be sure to try the Bob Armstrong queso dip. It’s spicy beef, guac, sour cream and queso all mixed together into one gooey delicious mess.
Do you like salsa dancing? Gloria’s (El Salvadoran food) has salsa dancing on Friday and Saturday nights in Addison.
On Saturday, check out the downtown Farmers Market. I love that place.
Also, Patrizio’s in Highland Park Village (I know, I know, blech) has $1 bellinis for the month of July. IJS.
Dakota’s is OK for a downtown restaurant, but I think the escalator down from street level is better than the food. I’d go for another Dallas staple like Al Beirnat’s if you want a steakhouse.
My personal favorite place right now is The Porch on Henderson. It’s across from a great bar called the Old Monk, another fun birthday place. The Porch has the best macaroni and cheese you will ever put in your mouth.

Well, this isn’t technically a bar, but the downtown bus station has a men’s bathroom that’s usually hopping with activity. A lot of guys go there to drink and pass out in the stalls. Not the place for a romantic cocktail, but if you’re just looking for a place to guzzle some Malt Duck and konk out for a few hours, you can hardly beat it.
Really, though, I avoid Dallas and don’t have any good advice for you other than have a happy birthday, Wendy!!

Honey, I am in fact quite lame when it comes to recommending D-spots. I lived in Lewisville/Carrollton/The Colony briefly and grew to love Cristina’s (there are several locations) and Studio Movie Grille. Alas, I am often out of town on weekends and penny-pinching during the weekdays.
I will say there is a great Argentinian bakery in Irving, on Belt Line near 183 East. Amazing pastries! I also always dug breakfast at Cafe Brazil (I was initially disappointed at its obvious lack of Brazilian food/drink, which I was hoping for when I first stopped in) — very reasonable prices!
