To rock or not to rock

Is anybody going to the Austin City Limits music festival this year? (Sep.26-28)

A friend asked me to go, but I have mixed feelings about the lineup. Robert Plant and Alison Kraus are headlining, but I’d rather have both my ears gnawed off by tree sloths than listen or watch that duo.

On the other hand, Jenny Lewis (of Rilo Kiley fame), Gogol Bordello, Erykah Badu, N.E.R.D. and The Raconteurs sound pretty good. But do they sound $170 three-day pass good? Not sure about that.

I was hoping my big show of the summer would be a trek to see Dave Matthews Band (would be my 18th show) at the Gorge near Seattle in late August. I took the time off from work for it and don’t mind going by myself, but it pains me to pay that much just to go see a (albeit awesome) show.

To top all of this musical confusion off, my best friend recently got 2 tickets to see DMB July 4 in Charleston. I sooooo want to go. Alas, I work on the 4th, Emily’s wedding is the 5th and, once again, the cost of flying to the Charleston show makes me want to cry.

Is anybody going to see Dave in Dallas? I’m jealous.

Wendy — Spend the money to see DMB at the Gorge! It is one of the best outdoor venues there is, and to see DMB preform there on top of that…you shouldn’t pass that up! Besides, WA state is beautiful in August, although still hot!

Wendy,

The Plant/Krause combo actually isn’t all that bad… it’s a mellow, semi-bluegrass sound that, since you appreciate DMB, should appeal to your acoustic taste.

Yes indeed; you have to leave sorry Waco for some decent entertainment (Dallas or Austin).

You’ve obviously not mastered the art of the media pass. http://www.aclfestival.com/press/application.aspx

Separately, Krauss and Plant is an incredible combination that just earned rave reviews at Bonaroo Festival. Guess you’re not as musically diverse as your blog has portended you to be. Everyone has different tastes.

Just get a media pass. Write and blog about it. Enjoy one of the few perks of a journalism degree.

Yeah, the pass is a good idea, if they extend the courtesy to lowly bloggers. I’d argue that my taste is diverse — Lil Wayne, M.I.A, Wilco and Jason Mraz are burning up my ipod right now. I’ve just never been able to stomach solo Plant. Just a musical quirk of mine. And at the risk of being burned at the stake, I’m woman enough to admit that I’ve also never liked Neil Young.

Actually Foo Fighters is the headliner. Plus you can always go to see Beck at another stage while Alison Krause and Robert Plant play.

Wendy, fly to Charlotte, which is probably cheaper. Brenner and I will pick you up. You can stay in the big LA (not THAT LA) for a couple days. Then Amy can pick you up and y’all can head to Charleston, and everyone’s happy. Hooray!
