WALK THE WALK!
Wow, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure “Race for the Cure” was Saturday, May 3rd. It was really crowded and that’s a good thing. I walked the 5K with 2 of my Team Waco buddies, Candice and Debbie and it was really great. Candice brought her 9 year old daughter and she walked the whole 3.5 miles with little complaint. The only thing she said about the distance was “I’m glad I came, but my feet aren’t”. It helped that Debbie’s 3 girls, a son-in-law and her husband walked too. Oh and don’t forget her 4 grandchildren! Her family really is very supportive!
I meet several walkers and of course I talked to them about the 3-day! I already know they support Susan G. Komen for the Cure, but there are still alot of people that don’t know anything about the 3 -day 60 mile walk. It’s really a great time for those that want something more extreme, like me, or Cindy, Debbie, Candice, Pam, Anita, Sherry, Tracy, Samantha, Ronda, Rebecca and Lea! Our team has doubled from last year and we are really making great strides with our fundraising. so far over $10,000!
If you walked in the Race for the Cure on Saturday, and you want to do more, think about joining us on our journey this year. We will be scheduling training walks soon and you are welcome to join us. See if you have what it takes to ……………………………………………….Walk This Way!!!!

Thank You Wal-Mart Shoppers!
I want to thank the generous Wal-Mart Shoppers in Hewit last Sunday, at the Team Waco bake sale, fundraiser. We sold cookies, beer bread, banana bread and various pink ribbon items and got over $600 in donations! Wow!
We had fun, but almost got blown away. The wind was so strong we had trouble with our signs and ended up having to hold them. I brought my grand-daughter and her cousin with me, they were really a big help. Cedric held the sign most of the time and Cierra was really pulling the people in! It’s hard to beat cute kids as a selling tool!!!!!
We will be at it again at the same location, the Wal-Mart in Hewitt on Saturday, April 12 and Sunday, April 13, so come on out and see us. Learn about the Breast Cancer 3-Day and help us meet our fundraising goal. Each walker needs to raise $2,200 to walk in the 3-Day and all funds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for research, education and low cost mamagrams for our community.
Come back here for more on the next fundraiser and as always………………….Walk This Way!!!

WOW! I’ve Made My Goal!
I made my fund raising goal this week. I had a large refund from the insurance company on some dental work. I never expected them to pay it, but they did!!!!!! Put some of the money toward my walk and will use the rest to help out “Team Waco” walkers make theirs! I am so excited and glad that the fund raising part of my journey is behind me.
There are still quite a few team members that need help though. So as we are doing fund raiser’s around Waco, please stop and give us a few words of encouragement and if you can donate a dollar or two to help us all reach our goal and help fight breast cancer!!!!!
You can donate at Breast Cancer 3-Day and remember to …………………………..Walk This Way!

Fundraiser Over The Weekend
Well it looks like out Saturday fundraiser at the Hewitt Wal-Mart was a success! We raised over $500.00. Many thanks to all who stopped by! We really appreciate the donations. Debbie, Candice and Pam were the only ones out this weekend. It’s hard for us all to get together, but we are really working toward our goals and you really were generous, so thank you!
I am now a 3-Day Training Walk Leader and will be posting more about that next month. I hope to have a least one walk per month from May until October, but there is alot of set up to figure out. Where would you like to walk? Cameron Park, Baylor Trail? Any other site in Central Texas? Let me hear your thoughts on this because you are invited to join us.
And again, thanks for your generosity Waco and don’t forget to ………….. Walk This Way!!!

Beautiful Weekend!
It was really beautiful this weekend, great weather for walking and working in the yard. Not to hot, not to cold, just right! I love this time of year, always wanting to be outside, so why did I have to drag myself out to walk? I even tried to use cleaning house (which I hate) to keep from walking (which I love)! I walked a couple of miles on Saturday, but only 1 on Sunday, it was great, but, what? Once I got out there I kept thinking of all the things I need to do in the house and the yard. I guess I need to just shake it out and like the NIKE ads say Do It to get back in the groove. I’ll walk tonight and hopefull my husband will join me, it helps to have someone to walk with.
I hope everyone had a nice weekend and got outside. Hopefully the weather will be nice this next weekend for our bake sale at Hewitt Wal-Mart. Saturday and Sunday, April 12 & 13. We will have the usual stuff, cookies, banana bread, beer bread and pink ribbon items! Please come out and help us raise the funds for Breast Cancer 3-Day benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
And as always……………………….Walk This Way!!!!!!1

Controversy on our Fundraising!
The following is a response from Lennie Lamb (Team Waco’s Champion) regarding the comments recently on our blog and the fundraising we do for Susan G. Komen for the Cure .
“Who did you expect to see around when your relatives were fighting their cancer battle? I’m sure you saw doctors and nurses applying whatever methods or treatments were appropriate. Those options the doctors have are the results of much costly research. Yes, cancer still claims many lives. However without the research to find ways to combat this disease, the survivor list would be very short. Because of generous people who care and have compassion for others, that survivor list is quite long and getting longer everyday. I’m sorry about your relatives and all cancer victims but bad attitudes concerning those trying to make a difference will not cure anything. And Africa is a whole different ballgame.”
Everyone is entitled to their opinion on this, it just so happens that Team Waco believes in the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the good they do with the funds we and others raise. If you don’t want to give then DON’T.
Those that do want to give, Team Waco will be at the Hewitt Wal-Mart this Sunday, March 30 from 10 am to 4 pm. Come out and see us, let us know your story and please ………………Walk This Way!!!!!

CHANGES
There are changes underway! Our team is growing, 11 members now and several more people are mulling it over. I know it is a big challange to undertake, but just do it like everything else, one minute, one day, one step at a time. It is only as overwelming as you let it be.
Our Wal-Mart fundraiser in Hewitt is only going to be on Sunday, March 30. We were sorry to hear that we couldn’t do it on both Sat and Sun, but in a way that might be better, it gives us all day Sat to bake yummy goodies for YOU! So come on out Sunday, rain or shine and help us raise the funds for Breast Cancer 3-Day, benefitting Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
The last change is our blog. We have set up a new blog site for Team Waco. This will make it easier for us to post pictures and other information for the team. Wacotrib.com has really been a wonderful thing for Team Waco! It has let us really have a presence in the Waco community and hopefully that will continue with the new blog. As always, The Waco Tribune Herald is behind us 100% and we are grateful for that. Having your workplace support you in helping the community really makes a difference.
The blog will continue here at Wacotrib.com until after The Race For the Cure in May. You can see our prototype blog now at TEAM WACO. We are working out the bugs right now but save us in your favorites. Comments are welcome as we work through the new blog. And as always…………………………….Walk This Way!!!!!!!!

Walking and Planning!
Several of Team Waco walked on Saturday at the Baylor Trail. It was cold but sunny and we had a good time. It really helps when you walk with a buddy or two. While we walk we plan about letters to be sent, upcoming fundraisers, why we are walking. It gives you a chance to get to know the people on your team and what is important to them, a chace to form bonds that will last a lifetime! I love this bonus of friendship that we have all gained in this effort. It seems to me that when you start on a journey like the 3-Day that you get so much in return it makes what you do very easy and rewarding, even beyond the money you raise!
We have another angel ! Embroidery Plus, owned by Joyce and Paul Beechly, has offered to donate jackets to the members of Team Waco for our walk in November. What wonder people. Their family has been touched by breast cancer several times and this is their way of giving back. Cindy and I work with Joyce’s daughter Bonita Schroeder and we can’t thank her enough for this and what her family is doing. You can contact Joyce or Paul at 254-875-2609 or Beechlembroideryplus@msn.com. Give them a call for your embroidery needs, they are great people!
We have the fundraiser at the Hewitt Wal-Mart on March 29 & 30th. Come out and see us please! We will have Baked Goods, T-Shirts, Note Cards (made by Candice’s Mother), Knitted Face Cloths and Soap as well as Misc. Pink Ribbon Items. We are also selling Memory or In Honor of Quilt Squares for a quilt to be raffled off later in the year. So please come out and support us raise the money for the Breast Cancer 3-Day and don’t forget to ………………………………Walk This Way!
Celebrating Daylight Savings Time!
Finally - Daylight Savings Time is here! I know it is an odd thing to get excited about, but when you are trying to find time to walk, every extra hour of daylight counts!
During the last few months, I have learned to fit in a few extra steps everywhere I can. I park further away from the store when I shop. I take the stairs at work. I even walk around the field when my son is playing soccer. Now that the days are getting longer, I can start walking in the evenings after work. Every step now will make it that much easier to walk 60 miles in November.
In addition to raising money for breast cancer research and education, did you know that regular exercise (like WALKING) can decrease your risk for breast cancer? It’s true!
Speaking of raising money, don’t forget to stop by our bake sale on March 29 & 30 at the Hewitt Wal-Mart. We will have all sorts of home-baked goodies, along with plenty of pink ribbon merchandise for sale. All proceeds will go directly to the Breast Cancer 3-Day. If you are unable to make it, please visit Team Waco’s website and make a donation today!

Chi Walking!
Wow, what a weekend! Cindy and I went to San Antonio for a Chi Walking Workshop with Ken Runner, a Chi Walking/Running coach. We learned so much and he helped us to figure out what we needed to work on. The whole thing was lots of fun and really valuable to our whole goal of walking 60 miles in 3 days for the Breast Cancer 3-Day. He showed us what a difference it can make to use your core as you base when walking (or doing anything else). You hear all the time to “work on core muscles” and now Cindy and I know why. During one excercise he had us walk toward him, walking like we always do, and he was able to easily stop us with little effort on his part, but when we engaged our core he could not stop us without a lot of effort on his part, but for us it wasn’t strenuous at all!
While the concept is fairly simple, there are many things you must focus on to do this technique correctly. Once you understand the concept you work on one or two focuses when you take a walk. This lets you hone your skill for each componet of the technique. It gives you a lot to think about. Ken’s cell number is 210-355-7959, if you are interested in learning more or you can go to Chi Living and see what the founder of the technique, Danny Dryer has created.
The great thing about the whole weekend was Ken did not charge us! His fee is normaly $100 for a four hour session per person and he donted his time to us! Cindy and I both were overwhelmed at his generosity! That’s another $100 for each of us toward our goal of at least $2,200 each for our 2008 walk.
If you would like to help any of our team members reach our goal to raise the funds for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, you can go to our donation site at Team Waco 3-Day donation page and pick a team member to donate to or you can call me at 254-337-0898 or e-mail us at teamwaco3day@hotmail.com and leave your contact Info. You can also come out to Wal-Mart in Hewitt on March 29 or 30 and buy some home baked goods or other items we will have for a fund raiser.
Thank you Waco, and don’t forget to ……………………………….Walk This Way!!!!!

Winter, Blah!!!
I’ve had the winter blahs! My husband and I both have had colds and it seems that everyone at the Trib has the sniffles. Please let winter be over soon and the weather nice and warm (but not hot yet). I’ve only walked a few days this year and I’m ready to get out of the house and put some miles on my new walking shoes. Daylight savings time will be with us soon and I can start walking after work, then in June, start walking in the mornings as well.
Cindy and I are going to San Antonio next weekend for a session with a Chi Walking coach. I’ve written about this technique in previous posts, but it is really the key for me at least being able to walk long distances. You use your core muscles to keep you body properly aligned and that takes the pressure off the lower back, and that is a trouble spot for me. You can walk longer and faster with less fatigue. Hopefully it will go well and we can come back and share the tips we learned. If you are interested in finding out more about Chi Walking let me know at teamwaco3day@hotmail.com and I’ll send you some information.
Please put our fundraiser on you calander and come out and see us at the Hewitt Wal-Mart on March 29 & 30. We will also have a huge garage sale sometime this spring. We appreciate all the support you give us and as always thanks and………………………….Walk This Way!!!!!

Share Your Story with Team Waco
During the course of our fundraising last year, I was amazed by all of the people we met who had been personally touched by breast cancer. We met people who had lost loved ones, people who were currently going though treatment, and a great number of survivors. All had stories to tell that were heartbreaking, inspiring and touching.
Now it is your turn. We have told you how this disease affects everyone. We want to hear and share your story - be it one of struggle, survival, or loss. We want to know and acknowledge all of the people in Central Texas that we are walking for.
Last year during our walk, we wore T-shirts with names of breast cancer victims and survivors. We will do so again this year, so if there is someone that you would like us to walk in celebration, memory, or honor of, let us know. Please email us at teamwaco3day@hotmail.com.
Let us honor your friend or loved one as we walk for a cure!
First Team Walk a Great Success!
We had our first walk as a team, and it went really well! We aren’t as out of shape as we thought! Considering many of us had not walked at all since the event in October, it was really refreshing to find out we wouldn’t be starting from scratch as far as our training was concerned.
We walked 5 miles out at Baylor - the Bear Trail is a great place to walk! It is well-lit, and you are never alone. There are always other walkers (and runners) on the trail with you. It’s nice!
Also, I wanted to say thanks to the young lady who spoke to us while we were walking. Her quick “Way to go ladies!” was just what I needed to motivate me to finish. I appreciate it, and I’ll be seeing you again on the trail soon!
For those of you who haven’t, visit Team Waco’s 3-Day website and make a donation. We have set a lofty goal of $30,000, and we need your help to make it happen!
See you on the Bear Trail!

Team Waco Walk!
Team Waco is having their first team walk of 2008! We will be at the Baylor Trail on Sunday afternoon, around 2:30. You can come out and say hello and learn all about the Breast Cancer 3-Day that raises funds for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We are really excited to be participating in the 2008 3-Day. We learned so much last year that we can’t help be be better in 2008. We already have more team members and in a few days there will be a link to our team page that people can make donations to members of their choice. We also have lots of fundraisers in the works and hopefully we can have each members $2,200 raised by the end of May so we can concentrate on the walking. So far we have these things going on:
T-shirts for sale $15 Hair Cutting at The Mane Event - donation (suggested is $20 plus a tip for Amy Tindell, Stylist) Note Cards - for a $10 donation you get 6 w/envelopes (these will be coming soon)
We will also have bake sales around town and we are planning on other fund raisers that hopefully will appeal to the community of Waco! You can contact us at Team Waco. Thanks for your support last year and please support us again in 2008.

Hello from Candice Cameron!
Hello All!
My name is Candice Cameron, and I am a member of Team Waco. I walked in the 2007 DFW Breast Cancer 3-day, and let me tell you how it changed my life.
- I learned that breast cancer affects everyone - our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends. This IS NOT a disease that just happens to other people!
- A breast cancer diagnosis does NOT have to be a death sentence. With early detection,. some breast cancer survival rates are as high as 95%
- We CAN do something about finding a cure for this disease!
I have a daughter, and breast cancer runs in my family. If that isn’t scary, I don’t know what is! She is the reason that I signed up for the 3-Day last year, and she is the reason I’ll continue to walk until there is a cure. While walking 60 miles may not be for everyone, there is something you can do! Make a donation - every single donation counts! Let people know that you support this cause, and help Team Waco to Walk This Way!

Cedar Season is Here!
I don’t know about you but Cedar is kicking my behind right now. It came late but has finally arrived and I know I am not the only one suffering. It’s not bad enough that it’s cold season and flu season but everywhere you look there are people sneezing and blowing their noses.
I use a neti pot daily (sometimes twice a day) and take several different prescription drugs PLUS an allergy shot. It is still not enough! It’s hard to walk outside and train for our 60 mile walk when you feel like this, and being outside only makes it worse. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help control this stuff? I would love to hear from you.
Don’t forget our fundraiser at The Mane Event on Saturday, Feb. 2. Stylist Amy Tindale is donating her afternoon to help us raise funds. So e-mail me at teamwaco3day@hotmail or call me at 254-337-0898 to set up an appointment and help us reach our goal of $2,200 for each of our team members (8 so far) and get a hair cut by a great stylist at the same time! (suggested donation is $20 and a tip for Amy would be appreciated).

Several of the team members will be there handing out information about breast cancer and the Breast Cancer 3-Day. You can send me an e-mail to reserve your space at teamwaco3day@hotmail.com and we will see you there! (suggested donation is $20, and a tip for Amy would be appreciated).
