THE 5TH QUARTER: Reicher, Mart, La Vega and Midway

11:15 PM: That last Longview play is going to be very controversial. Everyone we’ve heard from so far says Midway got a raw, raw deal. Check out the photos below, and judge for yourself:

10:49 PM: Heartbreaking loss for Midway: Tyler McCray scores a TD on a 12-yard run. But the Lobos line up to go for 2 and they run a QB sneak. Aaron Johnson stretches across the goal line for the conversion as he’s falling into the end zone. Longview wins, 43-42.

10:43 PM: John Hubert, who now has 266 rushing yards by my count, runs nine yards for the Midway touchdown. Birthday boy Scott Newberry added the extra point. Midway takes its first lead of the game, 42-35. Longview gets its crack at it now. — Chad Conine

10:34 PM: Chad Conine: Going to overtime. Midway’s Glaesmann scores on a 1-yard dive with seven seconds left. Newberry kicked the extra point to make it 35-35. As much as I hate overtime on deadline, this has been an amazing football game.

10:31 PM: Midway has tied the game at 35 with 7 seconds left. Todd Glaesmann scored on a QB sneak.

10:20 PM: Midway stopped Longview on fourth-and-two from the 29. The panthers have 3:27 to try to tie the game.

10:01 PM: Longview ran on eight straight plays, plus a holding penalty on the Midway defense, to move 66 yards. McCray ran seven yards for the touchdown and Johnson ran for the two-point conversion. Longview goes ahead, 35-21 with 8:53 left in the game. — Chad Conine

9:53 PM: Chad Conine: Going to the fourth quarter. Longview has a third-and-one from their own 43.

9:51 PM: Midway’s staying close. The Panthers drove 65 yards in 9 plays and Hubert scored on a one-yard run — his 39th touchdown of the season. Holmes is making plays in the Midway passing game. Everything is aligning for the Panthers if they can just get a stop on defense. Longview 28, Midway 21, 1:06 left in the third quarter. — Chad Conine

9:44 PM: Longview answers with a 70-yard touchdown drive, capped by a tough five-yard run by QB Johnson. Longview 28, Midway 14 with 4:12 left in the third quarter. — Chad Conine

9:35 PM: Chad Conine reports: Midway put together its longest drive of the game to score a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half. Glaesmann made a spectacular catch of a Holmes pass in the end zone for a 21-yard score. Longview 21, Midway 14 with 7:51 left in the third quarter.

9:33 PM: La Vega 41, Cuero 21. Final.

9:26 PM: Chris Parr ices the game with a 38-yard TD run with 2:14 left. La Vega ran 7:02 off the clock with a 12-play, 81-yard drive. 41-21 Modoc.

9:25 PM: The Mart pairing for next week is 2 p.m. Saturday at Wichita Falls.

9:08 PM: La Vega gets back to square, 35-21, after Danzel Wilson’s 1-yard run and 2-point conversion run. Chris Parr had a 41-yard carry to get the Pirates to the 1. He’s got 19 carries for 192 yards (and 3 scores) on the night. 9:48 left in the game.

9:01 PM: Chris Parr makes it 27-21 for La Vega (after a blocked PAT) on a 3-yard TD run. Parr had big carries of 24 & 17 yards on the 5-play, 64-yard drive. 11:19 in the 4th.

8:58 PM: Really unbelievably exciting game b/t Propser and Wylie as Wylie scores, then Prosper scores and goes for 2 … and makes it. Brian Lewis, eat your heart out. Prosper wins, 39-38. If La Vega pulls it out, they’ll face a (hopefully) exhausted Prosper team.

8:57 PM: La Vega-Cuero is 21-all, end of 3rd.

8:53 PM: Cuero’s 12-yard pass from Tyler Arndt to Robert Armstrong on 4th and 7 ties the game. La Vega’s pressure was fierce, but Armstrong came all the way from the other side of the formation. Score makes it 21-21 at 1:31 in the 3rd.

8:50 PM: Longview QB Johnson threw to a wide-open receiver, Cody Taylor, as the Lobos go back up by two scores. Longview 21-7, 1:47 to go in the half. — Chad Conine

8:44 PM: Midway responds with a 52-yard scoring drive. John Hubert ran four yards for the touchdown and Scott Newberry kicked the extra points. Longview 14, Midway 7 with 6:29 left in the second quarter. — Chad Conine

Midway’s key play on the drive was a 19-yard bubble screen from Holmes to Todd Glaesmann on a fourth-and-16 from the longview 41.

8:43 PM: Trent Jackson finds the end zone on a 27-yard “pretty incredible run,” according to Jason Orts. Jackson spun out of several tackles on the 1-play drive. (A Cuero punts pinned La Vega at its own 1, the Pirates went 3-and-out, and then had a 22-yard punt). 5:30 in the 3rd.

8:41 PM: If you’re interested in who La Vega might be playing next, the guys over at TexasFootball.com are liveblogging the Abilene Wylie-Prosper game, which just went to overtime.

8:31 PM: Longview’s Alonte’ Darden intercepts a Corey Holmes pass at the Longview 40 and returns it to the Midway 18. Two plays later, Longview QB Aaron Johnson scampers around the right end for a 15-yard touchdown. Longview 14-0 with 11:05 left in the half. — C-squared

8:28 PM: Via Chad Conine: A fast first quarter comes to a close with Longview ahead 7-0. The Lobos have a slight momentum edge with the touchdown and the injury to Dixon. However, Dixon is up on the sideline and running around, riding the exercise bike and apparently trying to stretch something out.

8:10 PM: Longview’s Tyler McCray runs 17 yards for a touchdown and the game’s first score. Longview 7-0, 2:56 left in the first quarter.

Midway’s Ahmad Dixon came off the field on that drive. he’s on the bench with a small crowd around him. It’s hard to tell what the problem might be, it looks like it could be a concussion situation. — Chad Conine

8:09 PM: Chad Conine is bringing us live updates from Texas Stadium in Irving: Longview and Midway both punt on their first possessions. It’s a defensive battle so far. no score with 7:46 left in the first quarter.

8:00 PM: Halftime stats:

  • Total yardage — La Vega 246, Cuero 59
  • Chris Parr — 11 carries for 107 yards, 2 TDs
  • Danzel Wilson — 5-for-5 passing for 71 yards, 1 TD
  • Cuero’s Trent Jackson — 8 carries for 23 yards, 1 TD
  • Cuero rushing attack — 12 carries for 8 yards
  • Penalties — La Vega 4-34, Cuero 0-0

7:55 PM: La Vega 21, Cuero 7. Halftime.

7:50 PM: Tim Kemp hauls in a 17-yard pass from La Vega QB Danzel Wilson to make it 21-7 Pirates, capping a 15-play 80-yard drive that took nearly the entire second quarter. Cuero blew the coverage on a throwback to the tight end screen. Clock is at 1:26 before halftime.

7:30 PM: Well, we might have a ballgame, Jason Orts says, as Cuero’s Trent Jackson gets into the end zone on a 13-yard run to cut it to 14-7 at 10:06 in the 2nd. The Gobblers converted a 4th-and-13 to get into the red zone on Tyler Arndt’s 20-yard strike to Tanner Hoffman.

7:27 PM: 14-0 after a quarter. Cuero is driving, though, and poised to enter the La Vega red zone.

7:18 PM: Chris Parr again, this time from 39 yards out, making it 14-0 La Vega. Jason Orts’ official stats say the total offense so far is 140-something to minus-14 or so in favor of the Pirates.

7:05 PM: The La Vega Pirates jump out to a 7-0 lead after a 23-yard Chris Parr TD run. Eddy Gonzales’s kick makes it 7-0 Modoc.

Jason Orts is at Round Rock ISD Stadium tonight bringing up updates from La Vega’s state semifinal game vs. Cuero.

3:46 PM: It’s over. Mart will play for its sixth state championship after beating Junction, 22-12.

3:42 PM: Ryan Montgomery picks off a Junction pass to all but seal the win. Mart has the ball with 2:12 to play.

3:34 PM: Mart looks like it’s going to the state championship game. Williams scores from two yards out to give the Panthers a 22-12 lead with 3:41 to play. The drive took 4:05 off the clock. The extra point was no good.

3:21 PM: Going to the fourth quarter. Mart clings to a 16-12 lead.

3:13 PM: STATE CHAMPS! Reicher finishes off Austin Regents, 49-17, to win the TAPPS Division III state title.

The Cougars dominated opponents in the playoffs, winning each game by at least three touchdowns.

3:01 PM: Mart retakes the lead on a 14-yard run by Johnny Jones. Two-point conversion is no good. Mart 16, Junction 12. 8:38 left in the third quarter.

2:38 PM: Reicher is ready for its victory lap in the fourth quarter. The Cougars lead Regents 42-7 after three quarters. Rasner had a nine-yard TD run, and Tracer McClinton returned an interception 60 yards for a score.

Chalk it up. Two state titles in a row for Reicher.

2:24 PM: Shaeffer misses a 47-yarder on the last play of the half. Junction leads Mart at the break, 12-10.

2:17 PM: A turnover bites Mart as Junction’s Cole Sandlin picks up a fumble and goes 78 yards for a touchdown to give the Eagles a 12-10 lead with 52 seconds left in the second quarter. Two-point conversion attempt was no good.

2:09 PM: Junction gets back into the game on Dustin Stapp’s three-yard touchdown run. The extra point is wide left, so it’s 10-6 Mart wtih 2:55 left until halftime.

2 PM: Mart makes an interception to thwart a Junction drive. Williams actually returned it more than 90 yards for a touchdown, but a blocking penalty wiped out the score most of the return.

1:54 PM: End of the first quarter, 10-0 Mart.

1:44 PM: Shaeffer sure gives Mart an edge, especially in Class 1A. He knocks through a 40-yard field goal to give the Panthers a 10-0 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter.

1:32 PM: Mart quickly takes the lead on a one-yard run by Xavier Williams. Matt Shaeffer’s extra point makes it 7-0 Panthers with 9:26 left in the first quarter.

1:29 PM: Doesn’t look like Regents is going to avenge its regular-season loss to Reicher. The Cougars lead 28-0 at halftime.

John Werner reports: Kenneth Cluley has passed for a touchdown and ran for two more in the first half of the TAPPS Division III state championship game.

Ross Rasner has rushed for 127 yards. Stephen Harrison had the Cougars’ other touchdown on a one-yard run.

Nick Castillo caught the TD pass from Cluley from 16 yards out.

1:03 PM: OK, we’re back to finish up Week 4 of the playoffs today.

First, Reicher was leading Austin Regents, 22-0, in the second quarter of the TAPPS Division III state championship game in Temple.

We’re awaiting a halftime update from John Werner.

In less than a half-hour, Mart and Junction will kick off their Class 1A Division I state semifinal at Georgetown. Jason Orts is on the scene.

After that game, Jason will shift over to Round Rock ISD Stadium for the 7 p.m. Class 3A Division I state semifinal between La Vega and Cuero.

Finally, Chad Conine will report from Texas Stadium as Midway and Longview kick off their Class 4A Division I Region II final, starting at 8 p.m.

I agree with Cody!!! POOR POOR call on the refs part. Midway WON that game. It needs to be argued by the Midway coaches. I cant believe that. The ball way not over the line and the carriers knees were down in the second pic. To me that is just terrible terrible terrible refs. Midway hold your heads high, you won that game!!!

B*!!!, You are CRAZY as hell. He was STILL suspended in the air if you LOOK closely at the PICTURE as he was leaning over the goal line!!! Ya’ll LOST!!! PERIOD. I commend Midway for not laying down. They kept on swinging every time we countered with something! Find you one of those damn universal, remotes and start pressing buttons. If, we come out half-assing like we did in this game against Denton-Guyer, we can eat vienna sausages with you. Enjoy! Oh, yeah. EAST TEXAS RUN THIS B*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, it looks like McCray scored in the photo. Even if he hadn’t when the photo was taken, he would have crossed it by the time he actually lands on the ground and stretches out his arm. Regardless, it was good for Midway students to experience this. Rarely do they get to see this kind of success. Go Panthers!

Wow! Now Midway’s going to be reminding people for years that they think they should have won. That’s going to be quite annoying.

They way I see it, Waco High is like UT: good year-in and year-out, with a down year every now and then. Midway is like A&M: they’ll have a good year once in a long while, but think they’re the s*. University is like Baylor: show the potential and are on their way up. China Spring is like Texas Tech: not necessarily the most athletic, but play very sound fundamentals. La Vega would be like Oklahoma State: very athletic, but can also play flat for no apparent reason.

The question is, would LaVega still be in the playoffs if they would have not thrown the game aginst Lorena? I saw the season would be over for them.

Midway had their chance in regulation to win, but couldn’t get it done. If you’re going to blame the refs for the loss, then you are blind yourself.

There’s 2 things you have to look at in these pictures…1) not a single one is on the goal line and it is all at an angle. 2) he’s still in play when that second pic is taken. Either way, it matters not at all…as Longview is going to be playing next week no matter what the Midway fans want to believe.

That was a terrible call, I called it from the stands his knee was down no doubt. True Midway could have won in regulation had it not been for the delay of game penalty on the extra point, but the refs would not give them the time out that the Panthers called. Congratulations to Longview though, they played a great game it is just unfortunate that the Refs had to decide it at the end and not the players.

Hey Sub, you sound like a dumbass when you open your mouth! You may be right or wrong, we are looking at a still photo that really tells us nothing. You can speculate what happens after the photo was taken. Maybe he did maybe not.

Sub, I must agree with Marc. Don’t gloat. You do not represent the attitude or opinion of East Texans. Midway was GREAT. Seriously underestimated by all of us. Hat’s off to some great kids and parents. Ya’ll have nothing to be ashamed of and best wishes to all of your kids in their careers. Wasn’t there and cannot comment on the play, but by radio it was a thriller.

Partial Opinion, do you have a partial brain as well? I suspect you’re assessment of these colleges is based on some weird redneck logic (or lack thereof), and not actual experience at anything north of 7th grade. Remember that all these schools have fans, parents, students, athletes who deserve more respect than that.
