THE 5TH QUARTER: Six-man action with Abbott and Walnut Springs
SCOREBARD, etc.
10:48 PM: Giddings 21, Bellville 20. Narrow escape.
10:34 PM: A quick look around the state:
- Tight battle with Giddings and Bellville, 14-all in the 4th
- Celina blew out Kaufmann, 50-6
- Great close 1A action as Albany toughed out a 14-7 victory over Archer City and Ganado by the same score over Falls City
- Smithson Valley edged SA Reagan 19-14
- Sulphur Springs prevailed in a shootout at Texas Stadium, 52-47 over Rockwall Heath
- Still in progress right now: Kirbyville is handling Altair Rice 42-28 in the 3rd
10:27 PM: Finals: Strawn 102, Abbott 70. Woodson 101, Walnut Springs 63.
10:22 PM: Strawn hits 100 as Jonathan Lindsey returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown. Strawn 102, Abbott 70 with 3:24 left in the fourth quarter. — CC
10:21 PM: Wow, a third kickoff return TD for Walnut Springs’ Caleb Ballesteros! He took it 80 yards to the house. Bad snap on the PAT only cuts the margin to 38 — it’s 101-63. Hornets in danger of getting 45’d with 1:30 left.
10:18 PM: Caleb Hagle gets Woodson to hangin’ a hunny. His 12-yard touchdown run makes it 101-57 (that’s 44, by my math) with Alex Cortez’s kick. 1:42 left in the game.
10:12 PM: I’m afraid the dream may be over for Walnut Springs. Caleb Hagle’s 8-yard TD with 5:08 left (Alex Cortez kick) makes it 93-57.
10:04 PM: Not much going right for Walnut Springs as Woodson scores a safety. It’s now 85-57. 6:19 left.
10:01 PM: Strawn stopped Abbott at the Greyhounds 5, then on the first play of their ensuing possession, Trey Doyle romped 77 yards for a touchdown. Strawn 86-62 with 8:57 left in the game. — Chad
9:54 PM: Woodson’s Caleb Hagle pushes this into near-impossible for Walnut as he scores on a 4-yard TD run. Cortez kick is good to make it 83-57 Woodson with 8:24 left on the clock.
9:49 PM: Strawn put together a long, time-consuming drive — 6 plays, 41 yards, eating up 2:32 — to add to its lead. Johny Abbott caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Adrian Garcia to boost the Greyhounds lead to 78-62. Interestingly, despite stopping Abbott three times and scoring every time but once, Strawn just has a two-score lead at 78-62 with 28 seconds left in the third quarter. — Chad Conine
9:45 PM: Maybe they ran out of points in Hico. Still Woodson 75, Walnut Spring 57 at the end of the 3rd.
9:39 PM: I’m barely able to type these updates fast enough. Strawn’s Johny Abbott threw a 41-yard pass to Reyes to the Abbott 1, then Johny Abbott ran one yard for the touchdown on the next play. But the greyhounds missed the extra points, which are starting to add up. Strawn leads 72-62 despite scoring every time they’ve had the ball (except for at the end of the second quarter) and holding Abbott twice. — Chad Conine
9:37 PM: Jared Hutchens of Woodson scores approximately his 73rd touchdown of the game with an 18-yard run. Alex Cortez’s kick is true to make it a palindromic 75-57, Walnut Springs trailing, with 1:58 left in the 3rd.
9:33 PM: Abbott converted a huge fourth-and-goal play as Crawford threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Chris Rodgers. Middlebrook adds the extra points to cut Strawn’s lead to 66-62 with 4:37 left in the third. — Chad Conine
9:32 PM: How about ANOTHER kickoff return for Walnut Springs’ Caleb Ballesteros? The super special teamer goes 80 yards to cut the Woodson lead to 67-57 after the kick is blocked. 3:10 3rd.
9:30 PM: Big turnover for Woodson as Randy Sullivan picks off Walnut Springs for a 50-yard INT return. Alex Cortez’s kick is good, making it 67-51 Woodson at the 3:24 mark in the 3rd.
9:27 PM: Abbott report from Glen Rose: Strawn’s Jonathan Lindsey ran 55 yards for a touchdown to push the Greyhounds back ahead by two scores at 66-54 with 5:59 left in the third quarter. — Chad
9:24 PM: Abbott’s Kyle Crawford connects with Colton Snokhous again, this time for a 24-yard touchdown and Middlebrook adds the extra points to cut Strawn’s lead to 58-54 with 6:14 left in the third quarter. — Chad Conine
9:18 PM: Chad Conine reports: Strawn’s Trey Doyle runs 28 yards for a touchdown. kick failed. Greyhounds 58-46 with 8:17 left in the third quarter.
9:17 PM: Jacob White pulls Walnut Springs to within 8 on a 52-yard TD catch from QB Eddie Witt. Herring’s PAT is good, making it 59-1. 7:40 3Q.
9:15 PM: Abbott’s trying to keep pace. Crawford threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Colton Snokhous. Strawn blocked the extra point to maintain a 52-46 lead with 8:31 left in the third quarter. — C.C.
9:12 PM: Woodson scores again: Hutchens 43-yard TD run with the Cortez kick good. Walnut Springs now trails 59-43, 8:45 3rd.
9:11 PM: Strawn’s Johny Abbott ran 42 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage of the second half. the kick failed but Strawn takes a 52-40 lead with 9:42 to go in the third. — Chad Conine on the scene
9:09 PM: Walnut Springs wastes no time scoring! A 71-yard kickoff return by Caleb Ballesteros (kick blocked) makes it 51-43 with Woodson still leading. 9:43 / 3rd..
8:47 PM: Strawn is starting to gain some separation. After Abbott punted, Johny Abbott threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to Victor Reyes to cap a 73-yard drive. Strawn leads 46-32 with 1:23 left in the first half. Abbott really needs to score, since Strawn will take the opening kickoff of the second half.
… and there it is as Ethan Watson returned the kickoff 71 yards for a touchdown. Middlebrook adds the extra point. Strawn 46, Abbott 40 with 56 seconds left in the half. — Chad Conine
8:46 PM: Woodson’s Spencer Clark finds Caleb Hagle for an 18-yard TD pass. Kick is good to make it 51-37 with 0:21 left in the half. Hopefully Walnut can pull to within a score again before the break.
8:40 PM: Walnut doggedly scores again on a 40-yard pass from Witt to Jacob White. Herring’s kick is good to make it 43-37 Woodson with 1:17 left in the half.
8:36 PM: Chad Conine: I think I’m going to see one of those 90-88 games we always gawk at. Strawn just scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Garcia to Christian Johnson. Greyhounds lead 38-32 with 4:40 to go in the first half.
Difference in the game is a fumble by Abbott.
8:32 PM: Abbott takes the lead back as Hunter Johnson caught a screen pass from Kyle Crawford and scrambled 47 yards for a touchdown. Dustin Middlebrook added the extra point to put the Panthers up 32-30 with 5:07 left in the second quarter. — CC in GR
8:31 PM: Looks like Walnut will be playing catch-up after Jared Hutchens scores on a 5-yard run with 2:59 left. Kick is good to make it 43-29 Woodson.
8:26 PM: Jonathan Stack gets Walnut Springs back within easy striking distance with a 3-yard TD run. Andrew Herring’s kick is good, making it 35-29 Woodson at the 5:45 mark in the 1st half.
8:25 PM: Strawn took its first lead of the game, 30-24.
8:20 PM: Jared Hutchens scores yet another touchdown for Woodson, this one on a 35-yard run. Kick was good to make it 35-21 at 7:29 before halftime.
On their previous drive, Walnut Springs started from its own 4 and Zach Turnham caught a pass with no one around him behind the Woodson defense on the first play from scrimmage — but fumbled, and Woodson recovered. Them’s the breaks.
8:17 PM: Cove’s already running away with their region final, up 24-7 on Klein Oak.
8:14 PM: Chad Conine from Glen Rose: Strawn’s Johny Abbott threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Lindsey, but the Greyhounds’ extra-point try was blocked. Abbott leads 24-22 with 9:51 remaining in the second quarter.
8:13 PM: Woodson’s Jared Hutchens scores his 3rd TD of the game on a 2-yard run. Point-after pass is good to Randy Sullivan from Alex Cortez. 27-21 Woodson, 8:19 2nd.
8:09 PM: Abbott’s Hunter Johnson has run for two touchdowns and Bryan Price added a score as the Panthers have taken a 24-16 lead as we approach the end of the first quarter. — Chad Conine reporting live from Glen Rose
8:08 PM: Copperas Cove leads Klein Oak, 14-7, in the 2nd.
8:06 PM: Walnut Springs takes a lead with a 59-yard TD pass from Stack to Witt. The Hornets went for 1 and got it on a Zach Turnham pass from Andrew Herring, so the good guys are up 21-20 over Woodson.

8:02 PM: Caleb Hagle gives Woodson a lead on a 4-yard run. Walnut Springs’ stingy special teams comes up with the kick block, though, and it’s 20-14 with 1:35 left in the 1st.
7:56 PM: Walnut Springs isn’t going anywhere — Jonathan Stack connects with Eddie Witt with 4:08 left in the 1st to knot things at 14 after a missed kick.
7:51 PM: Ah, defense: Woodson’s Hutchens breaks free for a 60-yard scamper to the end zone, but the kick fails and it’s now 14-8 over Walnut. 5:25 in the 1st.
7:49 PM: Let the scoring begin in the Walnut Springs game! At 8:17 in the 1st, Jared Hutchens gets Woodson on the board with a 6-yard TD run. But Walnut Springs answers back with a 7-yard rushing score from Jonathan Stack at 5:39. All tied up at 8-8.
We’re giving the people what they want tonight: live scoring updates from the six-man semifinals. In Div. I, it’s Abbott vs. Strawn out in Glen Rose. And in Div. II, Walnut Springs is going up against Woodson in Hico. Nothing bigger going on in the state tonight.
But if you’re interested in that weak crowded-field stuff, 1660-AM (KRZI) has Sulphur Springs vs. Rockwall Heath on the radio. That’s being played up at Texas Stadium tonight.
Also, Copperas Cove is facing off against Klein Oak up at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana. We’ll let you know what we hear on that one.
