THE 5TH QUARTER: Playoffs, Week 3
11:37 PM: Here’s a quick recap of who moved on this week and who’s yet to play:
Moved on
- Copperas Cove (vs. Lake Highlands-Klein Oak winner)
- Midway (vs. Longview-Dallas Carter winner)
- La Vega (vs. Cuero-La Feria winner)
- Reicher (vs. Austin Regents-Carrollton Christian winner)
- Abbott (vs. Gordon-Strawn winner)
- Walnut Springs (vs. Woodson)
Playing Saturday
- China Spring (if they win, vs. Prosper-Van winner)
- Mart (if they win, vs. Shiner-Junction winner)
11:05 PM: Just heard Bremond took a tough 35-32 loss to Cayuga. Do-it-all QB LiDarral Bailey threw for 227 yards and 4 TDs, but also 4 picks.
10:35 PM: Cove scores a huge TD with 19 seconds left. Game over. 55-48 Dawgs.
10:29 PM: Whew — now that I’ve caught my breath, I’ll let you know that Cove and Cy Ridge are all tied up at 48 out at Waco ISD Stadium.
And Lake Travis has let its 35-17 lead evaporate. Alice has pulled to 35-32.
10:18 PM: TOUCHDOWN PIRATES! 34-28 final. La Vega wins!
The Pirates will probably play Cuero next week.
10:17 PM: Danzel Wilson QB sneak. No go. 2nd down.
10:16 PM: La Vega gets 2 first downs. 1st and goal from the 1.
10:15 PM: On the 2nd play of the drive, Daxton Swanson picked off a deep post pass at the goal line. La Vega just needs to score to win.
10:12 PM: La Vega wins the toss and elects to play defense first.
10:07 PM: Wow! From the La Vega 43, Navasota’s Jacolby Stokes dumps it off to Dexter Pratt, who goes 8 yards to the La Vega 35. As he was being tackled, Pratt lateraled back to Brandal Jackson who took it in for the score. It’s all tied up at 28 now. This one looks like it’s headed to OT with 0:17 left.
10:00 PM: Nailbiting time for La Vega: Navasota gets the ball back at its own 29 with 1:41 to go in the game. Pirates got one first down, but weren’t able to get another.
9:57 PM: Huge turnover for La Vega! With Navasota at 3rd-and-goal from the 11, Danzel Wilson stepped in front of a quick slant for the pick and returned it to the 19. Pirates lead 28-21 with 4:48 left in the ballgame.
9:47 PM: Bremond’s got a game now: The Tigers trail 28-24 to Cayuga going to the 4th. David G. says that the difference in the game is that Cayuga is 4-for-4 on PATs and Bremond has gone for 2 four times.
9:45 PM: Big school check: For the Cove fans out there, the Bulldawgs are slowly distancing themselves from Cy Ridge. It’s 45-28 now in the 4th.
Looking down the road for Midway, Frenship (potential state semi opponent) is handling Denton Ryan by 10 points currently and Lake Travis (title game) is romping over Alice, 35-17 in the 2nd half.
9:37 PM: La Vega retakes the lead with a bulling 7-yard TD run by Chris Parr on 4th and 5. According to Jason Orts at the game, Parr broke 3 tackles up the middle to fight into the end zone.
That was the second 4th-down conversion on the drive. Earlier, Joe Stevens laid a huge block on the edge to spring QB Danzel Wilson for a 21-yard gain on 4th and 4 from the Navasota 33.
This one’s 28-21 Modoc with 0:34 left in the 3rd.
9:30 PM: Abbott’s defense stiffens and holds off Calvert, 38-28. Final. The Panthers are rewarded by getting the Gordon-Strawn winner next week. (That game’s tomorrow night.) According to sixmanfootball.com’s rankings, Abbott is the No. 3 team in the state and Calvert was No. 1. Gordon and Strawn are Nos. 2 and 4, respectively. Tough competition!
9:27 PM: It’s all tied up for La Vega at 21 after Navasota’s Jacolby Stokes connects with Brandal Jackson on a 30-yard hitch-and-go touchdown pass (Daxton Swanson bit on the hitch). 4:52 in the 3rd.
9:17 PM: Calvert strikes back as JaMarcus Ashley throws a 33-yard pass to Kelwin Wells (kick failed). Abbott still leads, 38-28 with 5:36 left.
9:16 PM: Walnut Springs will face the Woodson-Highland winner in the state semis, BTW. It’s a defensive struggle as Woodson holds a 22-16 lead after 3 quarters.
9:14 PM: Abbott isn’t gonna lie down as the Panthers do the ol’ Kyle Crawford-to-Colton Snokhous pass thing for a 19-yard TD with 6:19 left in the game. Dustin Middlebrook’s kick makes it 38-22 over Calvert.
9:13 PM: Congrats to little Walnut Springs: They hold on for an 80-73 win vs. a Star team that’s put up 100+ scores twice this season. According to the sixmanfootball.com message boards: “Star fumbled at 1 yard line Walnut recovered behind goal line.”
9:01 PM: “Momentum has pretty clearly shifted,” says Brice Cherry from Moody: Calvert’s Wendell Green scores on an 8-yard TD run to pull the Trojans within 30-22 behind Abbott at 0:37 in the 3rd.
8:59 PM: Calvert gets back in the game as Travis Walker hauls in a 47-yard touchdown pass from Jamarcus Ashley (kick good) to make it 30-14 Abbott. 1:31 left in the 3rd.
8:50 PM: Bremond scored to pull within 21-12 at halftime, behind Cayuga.
8:47 PM: Abbott’s Travis Russell makes it 30-6 on a 1-yard TD run (Kyle Crawford to Colton Snokhous pass) with about 4 minutes left in the 3rd. And the cherry on top: the Panthers went for the onside kick and got the ball. Impressive defense and special teams for Abbott tonight.
8:45 PM: La Vega 21, Navasota 14 at halftime. For total offense, the Pirates have 244 yards off 40 plays; Rattlers have 134 from 17.
The Pirates scored on their first three possessions, but only had 1 first down on their next two. Navasota gets the ball to start the 2nd half.
La Vega superman Chris Parr has 19 carries for 117 yards and 2 TDs, plus 2 catches for 30 yards. For Navasota, Dexter “Vince Erickson’s boy” Pratt has 2 carries for 10 yards.
8:39 PM: They just keep scoring: Walnut Springs is holding off Star, 66-57 with just under 5 minutes left. Meanwhile, Cove and Cy Ridge are all tied at 21 at halftime.
8:36 PM: Navasota’s still got some fight left as Jacolby Stokes takes a QB draw in for a score on 3rd-and-8 from 29 yards out. La Vega leads 21-14 here with 0:40 left until the break.
8:26 PM: Reicher 44, Lubbock Christian 7. Final. The Cougars advance to the TAPPS Division III title game, which will be played next Saturday, Dec. 6, at Temple High School’s Wildcat Stadium at noon. Reicher will either face district foe Austin Regents (whom the Cougars beat, 54-31, in Waco) or Carrollton Christian Academy.
8:24 PM: For you 5A fans out there, Copperas Cove was trailing 13-0 early but have quickly come back to take a 1-point lead before halftime.
8:22 PM: Abbott 23, Calvert 6 at halftime. Walnut and Star have traded scores again; it’s 60-43 in the 3rd.
8:16 PM: Abbott keeps rolling with a Kyle Crawford 3-yard TD pass to Colton Snokhous (Middlebrook kick). Panthers up 23-6 with 0:28 on the clock before halftime.
8:15 PM: Long-lost Tribber David G. Campbell just called to let us know that Cayuga’s leading Bremond, 21-6, after a quarter. Thanks, DGC!
8:13 PM: Reicher’s up 44-7 with about 8 to play. Pretty predictable for the Cougar juggernaut.
8:12 PM: Navasota throws a 78-yard pass to get down to the La Vega 15 — but on the next play, the Rattlers underthrow a fade pass to the left side and a leaping Daxton Swanson returns it from the 3 to the La Vega 40.
8:07 PM: Did you say Chris Parr? La Vega calls his number again with a TD on a 6-yard run with 9:27 left in the half. Eddy Gonzales’ kick makes it 21-7 Pirates at the end of the 9-play, 62-yard drive.
The key play was a 16-yard screen pass (first of the game) across midfield for — who else? — Chris Parr.
8:06 PM: Walnut’s up 52-37 now, the board says.
8:03 PM: Walnut Springs is up 44-29 at halftime, according to the always-reliable message boards over at sixmanfootball.com.
8:00 PM: Abbott takes a 15-6 lead on Calvert with a Hunter Johnson 6-yard TD run (Dustin Middlebrook kick). Johnson set up the score with some nifty defense on a punt block. There’s 5:29 left in the half out in Moody.
7:59 PM: End of the first quarter, still 14-7 La Vega. The Pirates have run 23 plays to Navasota’s 5.
7:52 PM: Chris Parr makes it 14-7 La Vega with a 9-yard TD run to cap a 13-play, 87-yard drive for the Pirates — who haven’t thrown a pass yet. Clock reads 2:16 in the 1st.
7:44 PM: Navasota evens things up with Brandal Jackson’s 56-yard TD catch from QB Jacolby Stokes. It’s 7-7 at 7:43 in the 1st.
7:36 PM: La Vega scores first on Chad Ward’s seven-yard run. 7-0 with 8:34 left in the first.
7:32 PM: So here’s what we’ve got tonight:
Reicher is dominating Lubbock Christian, 37-0, at halftime. We’re picking up updates from Lubbock radio station KJAK 92.7 FM.
The Trib’s Brice Cherry is at the Abbott-Calvert game in Moody.
Jason Orts is taking in La Vega vs. Navasota at Round Rock ISD Stadium.
We’ll also be grabbing any information we can about Bremond vs. Cayuga in Fairfield and Walnut Springs vs. Star in Hico.
7:31 PM: Calvert strikes first against Abbott. Travis Walker scores on a one-yard run on fourth-and-goal. Kick failed. 6-0 Trojans with 5:46 left in the first quarter.
7:22 PM: And, not to get too far ahead, but the state title sure looks like Reicher’s.
The other TAPPS Division III semifinal pits Carrollton Christian (which lost to Lubbock Christian, 33-13) against Austin Regents (which lost to Reicher, 54-31).
7:12 PM: Reicher is headed to the state championship game unless something amazing happens. 37-0 Cougars at halftime.
6:57 PM: Just caught the score, but could this really be right? Reicher 30, Lubbock Christian 0 with 2:48 left in the second quarter.
The Trib staff picked Reicher to win, but Lubbock Christian came into this game 11-1.
6:54 PM: All right, we’re back for the evening games.
I’ve been able to pick up a radio feed of the game from KJAK 92.7 FM in Lubbock.
Updates to come.
5 PM: FINAL: Midway 41, Highland Park 36. Great win for the Panthers.
4:58 PM: MIDWAY RECOVERS! The game should (finally) be over now. What a game.
4:55 PM: It’s not over. Highland Park scores to cut it to 41-36 on a five-yard pass from Woodley to Francis. Two-point try no good. Less than a minute to play, so the Scots will have to go for the onside kick.
4:46 PM: Hubert ices it with a 24-yard touchdown run. Midway leads 41-30 with 2:14 to play. PAT failed. Hubert has 279 yards on 35 carries.
4:37 PM: Getting a little dicey now for Midway. Highland Park scores again on a 19-yard Woodley-to-Hipps connection to cut it to 35-30. Two-point conversion failed. 4:20 to play.
4:26 PM: Highland Park scores to cut the lead to 35-24 with 7:36 to play in the game. Chris Hipps catches a 15-yard TD pass from Woodley.
4:14 PM: Midway has the ball back now, and we’re heading to the fourth quarter. Panthers lead, 35-17.
4:05 PM: Assuming Midway hangs on here, the Panthers will face the winner between No. 4 Dallas Carter (12-0) and No. 5 Longview (10-2), who play at 2 p.m. Saturday in Corsicana.
4:02 PM: Midway answers with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Glaesmann from Corey Holmes. The Panthers take a 35-17 with 1:55 left in the third quarter.
3:53 PM: Highland Park trims the deficit to 28-17 with a 32-yard field goal by Matt Bonano. 6:17 left in the third quarter.
3:34 PM: By the way, Hubert in the first half: 17 carries, 171 yards, 3 touchdowns.
3:29 PM: Some bad news for Midway at halftime. Defensive end Terrence Holloman sprained his knee late in the first half, and early reports are that he won’t return, Chad Conine reports. 28-14 Midway, getting ready for the third quarter.
3:13 PM: Looks like Highland Park is determined to make a game of it. Josh Francis hauls in a 24-yard pass from Luke Woodley with 6 ticks left on the clock before halftime. It’s now 28-14 Midway.
2:59 PM: Midway has taken complete control now. Todd Glaesmann’s one-yard touchdown run makes it 28-7 Midway with 1:43 left in the second quarter.
2:46 PM: Hubert scores again, this time from 34 yards out. Midway takes a two-TD lead at 21-7, 6:29 left until halftime.
2:34 PM: End of the first quarter. 14-7 Midway.
2:31 PM: Hubert strikes again with a 37-yard touchdown run. 14-7 Midway, 31 seconds left in first quarter.
2:25 PM: Highland Park ties the game with an eight-yard run by Brookes McIlhenny. 7-7, 2:19 left in the first quarter.
2:23 PM: Midway fumbles the ball right back. Highland Park has first-and-goal.
2:22 PM: Midway’s Vyonte Guess makes an interception in the end zone after teammate Ahmad Dixon tips a Highland Park pass. About two minutes left in the first quarter.
2:07 PM: John Hubert does it again. His 33-yard touchdown run gives Midway a 7-0 lead with 9:47 left in the first quarter.
2 PM: We’re back for the third week of the playoffs.
Chad Conine will be providing live updates from Midway’s game against Highland Park, which is about to start in Corsicana.
Later tonight we’ll have continuous updates on La Vega-Navasota and Abbott-Calvert, plus news from Reicher-Lubbock Christian, Bremond-Cayuga and Walnut Springs-Star.

If there were a fifth quarter in that game; Midway would have lost their butts. The Panthers hung-on by the skin of their teeth.

Fred, Just wanted to let you know so that you could further your education past pre-school that the Midway game being so close is what you call a GOOD game. Not a “slaughter.”

Looks as if La Vega has cheated their way into a possible spot at State. If they do actually win, I hope they realize how they got there: throwing a game just so they could go big school division. Happy Holidays to all and everyone be careful whenever you go to Walmart! :)

Fred, you should really think about attending a game or two during the season & realize that Midway actually has a good team. Not one time did Highland Park lead during this game. Have you ever thought about attending ANY kind of a high school football game or do you just like to run your mouth?

Fred….. If you want to have Ifs, I got one. If Highland Park didn’t get their Butt kicked so bad in the first half, they could have won also. This is football!!! Using the clock is part of the game. If there was a 5th quarter, Midway wouldn’t have played such a safe (almost too safe) of a game. You just would have seen more passing and that helped get them so far ahead in the first half. Highland had to get risky and Midway just had to hold the lead and not take chances of loseing such an important game. Face it …..The better team won.

hey the citizen u need to let the kids play and not bring them down, if u dont like the coaching that is fine but those kids play there heart out ever friday night, too that lorena game also helped la vega see what they underclassmen were going to do. It gave those kids a chance to play more then a quater. So u might want to think about everything before u run ur mouth. one last thing quit living in the past the regular season ended and its over so move on.

This shows how much the CITIZEN knows about football. High schools don’t choose what district they want to play in. Who told you that MR. NO COACHING WILLIE WILLIAMS? You should know there are a few of LaVega’s coaches that played for Coach Bell and graduated from China Spring. What is it about LaVega that they hate China Spring, Robinson, Lorena and Connally? Is it because none of these schools show you the respect? Remember, respect is earned not demanded or try intimidating someone into respecting you. No one is going to remember LaVega winning state, but everyone will remember the year LaVega lost to Lorena on purpose so they wouldn’t have to face Celina and Liberty Hill…..

The only people who care about LaVega “throwing” the game to play against easier teams are the teams that did not think about it first. Don’t be mad at LaVega for being smart about it. Do you think that they are the only team that has ever done that??? What we as a community should be happy about is all the representation of local teams in the playoffs. Best of luck to those teams this week!

How do you figure China Spring cheated LaVega 2 years ago? Everytime I can remember a CS-LaVega game it was coaching blunders by the great Williams that cost them the game…last year’s playoff loss is a great example

lets get a few things straight. 1st, La Vega should not have thrown that game but its their choice so lets not argue about it. 2nd, China Spring would not have won last year had La Vegas Coach Willie Williams not called for a rekick. He already had the ball at the 30 yard line with the lead and he got greedy. on the rekick the wind blew the ball back towards China Spring where they recovered the ball past ten yards. 3rd, I have talked to many China Spring fans and they dont hate La Vega. In fact the rivalry is a lot like Texas-Texas A&M. (although the aggies spend all their time hating orange, they still made shirts for the national championship in 05 that said gigem horns today only.) which leads me to believe that if La Vega makes it to state China Spring fans would vote for La Vega over Abilene Wylie or Prosper. 4th, La Vega fans have made fun of China Spring for losing to Abilene Wylie by 3 points. Let me remind all La Vega fans that it was Abilene Wylie who gave La Vega their first loss of the season by two points. similar…..(oh boy here come the excuses i can hear them now: “Well we didnt have Chris Parr then !” YA KNOW WHAT. oh boo hoo! crie about it why dont you. a team is not based on one player. 5th, if anything China Spring players and fans have the utmost respect for La Vega. many of you dont remember this quote from last year. CHINA SPRING FOOTBALL TEAM: “La Vega is the toughest opponent we have ever played. every year there has been a close game with them.” now that is respect. it not like they called the pirates wusses after being them. they called the pirates their best opponents ever! LA VEGA FANS ARE SO EXCITED ABOUT THEIR TEAM THIS YEAR THAT THEY OFTEN POST STUPID THINGS ABOUT CHINA SPRING BECAUSE THEY ARE STILL MAD FROM LAST YEAR. GIVE IT UP LA VEGA FANS. LA VEGA HAS ALL THE TALENT IN THE WORLD IF THEY HAD A BETTER COACH THEY COULD HAVE WON STATE TWO YEARS IN A ROW BY THE END OF THIS YEAR. LA VEGA HAS SO MUCH TALENT THEY COULD WIN STATE ALMOST EVERY YEAR LIKE LIBERTY HILL OR CELINA. TRUTH IS WILLIE WILLIAMS IS JUST AN AVERAGE COACH AND LA VEGA NEEDS A GOOD ONE.
