Walnut Springs (7-3), bye

10:45 PM: Mexia update: They’ll face Gilmer, which won 54-0 tonight, in Tyler next Friday. Not sure what stadium

10:44 PM: BrazosSports.com has Normangee 22, Itasca 14 as a final.

10:40 PM: Midway will face Texarkana Texas High, which beat Whitehouse, 49-13 tonight.

10:22 PM: Reicher called off the dogs in the second half — it wound up 64-27. Cougars get the winner betwen Arlington Pantego and Dallas Lutheran.

10:14 PM: Midway 35, Forney 12. Final.

10:07 PM: McGregor wins, 35-0 according to our comments. Thanks for the score! The Bulldogs will meet Caddo Mills next week — the Foxes beat Kerens, 37-12, according to the Corsicana Daily Sun Web site.

10:05 PM: Copperas Cove wins, 21-7. Dawgs get Garland Naaman Forest, which knocked off Carrollton Creekview, 20-6, tonight.

9:59 PM: Mexia won, 20-18. Blackcats get the Gilmer-Diboll winner.

Mart, BTW, is probably going to play Hull-Daisetta, though that’s not confirmed.

9:57 PM: Next week’s pairing: China Spring (11-0) vs. Burkburnett, 6 p.m. Saturday at Aledo.

BTW, Mike Hicks had 19 carries for 244 yards tonight. Wow.

9:55 PM: 4th quarter scores:

  • Normangee 22, Itasca 14
  • Mexia 20, Crockett 18

9:54 PM: Some local finals:

  • Mart 26, Axtell 22 (whew!)
  • Arp 20, Teague 0
  • China Spring 24, Burnet 0

9:51 PM: Not Waco High’s night, as Bronshae’Keon Dugas fumbled at the Lancaster 2 on 2nd-and-goal. The Tigers march 98 yards and score on a Phillip Harvey 32-yard run. A blocked PAT by the Lions makes it 26-7 Lancaster with 7:35 to go in the game.

9:46 PM: Chad Conine reports from the Midway game: Forney gets on the board as Kezie Camp caught a tunnel screen and went 64 yards for a touchdown. Forney missed the extra point. Midway 35, Forney 6, 8:54 left in the third quarter.

9:37 PM: First 6-man action has ended for Central Texas as Milford doesn’t 45, but still knocks off Trinidad, 52-12. Milford (10-1) gets Calvert (8-0) next.

9:32 PM: It wasn’t easy — an 11 play 35-yard drive for Waco High — but Bronshae’Keon Dugas caps it with a 1-yard TD run. Ernesto Guevara’s PAT gets the Lions on the board. They trail 20-7 with about 2 minutes left in the 3rd.

9:31 PM: John Hubert adds five-yard touchdown run to make it 35-0 Midway. 1:19 3rd.

9:29 PM: From stoppable to un- : Mike Hicks goes up the middle on a 34-yard touchdown run. China Spring leads 24-0 now with 1:47 left in the 3rd.

9:18 PM: Upset alerts:

  • Axtell 8, Mart 6 at half
  • Normangee 16, Itasca 0 at half

Thanks to the good folks at Fairfields’ KNES radio station for keeping us in the loop.

9:16 PM: Midway’s John Hubert goes past 2,000 yards for the season on a vintage Hubert run. The Midway senior plowed into the line for about six yards, but kept churning and broke free from the Forney defense for a 19-yard touchdown. By my count, that puts him at 133 on 19 carries on the night and 2,010 for the season. Midway 28, Forney 0, 8:13 left in the third quarter. — Chad Conine

9:15 PM: Arp leads Teague, 14-0, at the half; Hearne’s trailing West Rusk, 24-8 in the 3rd; and Mexia trails Crockett, 12-6 in the 3rd.

9:05 PM: China Spring now leads 17-0 after a 10-yard Travis Veselka TD catch from Brian Bell.

Mike Hicks went down the left sideline for 59 yards on the Cougars’ first possession of the second half to make it 10-0.

8:58 PM: Reicher’s up 64-6 now. There’s still 4:10 left until halftime. This is why fifth-place teams probably shouldn’t make the playoffs.

8:54 PM: In more volleyball news, Groesbeck was eliminated by Caldwell in the 3A region semis in Bryan, 25-18, 25-14, 21-25, 25-13. Robinson is playing Hamshire-Fannett in other semi right now.

8:38 PM: Midway leads 21-0 at the half. Panthers will face the winner of Whitehouse and Texarkana’s Texas High next week.

And for you Pantherette fans out there, we’re sorry to report that Midway volleyball lost in five games against Richardson Pearce in the regional semifinal.

8:36 PM: Waco High’s been sporadic at moving the ball tonight

8:33 PM: Speaking of Lorena, we have the pairing for next week: Lorena vs. Carthage, 8 p.m. Friday at Mansfield ISD Stadium.

8:30 PM: While we’re at a bit of a halftime lull, we’ll congratulate Abbott, which 45’d Penelope 61-14 last night and advances to play Lometa next week; and Lorena, which hung tough to prove it belongs in the playoffs with a 24-14 win over Palestine Westwood, which was a co-champ in District 20-3A.

I say “proved they belong” because, of course, the Leopards knocked off La Vega in the last week of the season when Willie Williams rested his first string for most of the game. That knocked Robinson out of the likely 3-way tiebreaker, where the Rockets held the advantage over Lorena due partially to their 38-12 win over the Leopards.

We hear some Robinson fans showed up to razz Lorena at the game last night, and the conversation on WacoTrib.com has gotten pretty heated as well (click here).

Personally, I don’t know why Robinson would get mad at Lorena, of all teams. All the Leopards did was go out and win the game they had to in order to make the playoffs. If the Rockets are mad, La Vega seems like the more logical target for that because they didn’t play the way they “should have”.

8:26 PM: Score updates from our ticker: Lib Hill 14, West 0 in the 2nd; Cove tied 7-7 with Mesquite Horn in the 2nd.

8:24 PM: Chad Conine at Midway: Glaesmann takes a snap from the half-yard line and dives into the end zone for Midway’s third touchdown. A 27-yard punt return by Vyonte Guess and a 15-yard run by Hubert set up the score. Midway 21, Forney 0, 2:33 left in the second quarter. Time to check on who Midway will play next in the playoffs because Forney’s not getting back in this one.

8:22 PM: The 22-yard FG is good. Cougars 3-0 at half.

8:17 PM: From 4th and goal from the 5, James French will try a field goal with 0:02 left.

8:15 PM: Oh, man. The Cougars botch a handoff from Brian Bell to Jerome Lloyd, it gets kicked around a little and Bell falls on it. It’s now it’s first and goal from the 27.

8:14 PM: Burnet has 3 trips inside the China Spring red zone but no points; this time, the Cougars have just picked ‘em off. From their own 27, Mike Hicks breaks free for a huge 71-yard run and gets shoved out of bounds right at the goal line. It’ll be 1st and goal from the 2.

8:12 PM: Of course, it’s a lot easier to eschew those safeties for, say, a 38-yard Ross Rasner run. Nick Castillo’s kick makes it 30-0 Reicher. Yes, we’re still in the 1st quarter.

8:09 PM: You hear about teams that like to have a balanced attack with the ability to score both on the ground and passing — but you rarely hear a safety mentioned alongside those. But the Reicher Cougars can do that, too, and it’s now 23-0 with 2:02 left in the 1st.

8:07 PM: Uh-oh. Lancaster’s Skylar Scott slips past the Waco High corners and QB Thedford Rhodes goes over the top for an 86-yard TD strike. Tigers lead the Lions, 20-0.

8:04 PM: John Hubert puts Midway up 14-0. After Holmes completed a pass to Glaesman for a first down to the Forney 44, Hubert finished the drive on the next three plays. Hubert got around the right end for a 39-yard run to the Forney 17, then gained four to the 13 and found a seam for a 13-yard touchdown run. Midway 14, Forney 0. 11:02 second quarter. — via Chad Conine

8:02 PM: China Spring dodges, uh, a field goal as Burnet misses wide right.

8:01 PM: Six-man rules, anyone? Reicher’s Kenneth Cluley scores on an 8-yard run to put the Cougs up 21-0 at 2:35 in the 1st. Is that too early to say “rout”?

7:58 PM: Waco High is digging itself a hole here — Lancaster scores again on a Thedford Rhodes 7-yard run. PAT missed, and it’s 13-0 at 4:02 in the 1st.

7:54 PM: Chad Conine is at Midlothian tonight, and files this report on the Panthers: Midway strikes first. Forney drove into Panther territory but fumbled on a third and nine and James Morris recovered for the Panthers. On the next play, with the wind at his back, Midway quarterback Corey Holmes threw right on the money to Todd Glaesmann running a post pattern for a 57-yard touchdown. Midway 7, Forney 0, 2:33 first quarter.

7:53 PM: China Spring’s still scoreless after a quarter, which I guess is kinda suprising.

7:52 PM: Is a repeat state title in the Cougars’ future? Looks like Reicher thinks so. They’re up 14-0 quickly after a Ross Rasner 33-yard run and a Kenneth Cluley TD run. Nick Castillo always accurate with the leg, and it’s 14-0 with 5:26 left in the 1st.

7:50 PM: Lancaster draws first blood on Waco High: Freeman Kelley hauls in a 14-yard pass from Thedford Rhodes (Victor Chavez kick). Lions trail 7-0 at the 8:47 marl in the 1st.

7:48 PM: I’ve tune in to the China Spring-Burnet radio broadcast and the first words I hear are “mental errors for China Spring”. This one is scoreless near the end of the 1st.

Tonight, Chad Conine is covering Midway; Jason Orts is checking out Waco High; our good friend John Hillman is at China Spring; and Brian Bateman is in town covering Reicher taking on Colleyville Covenant.

Other than that, we’re relying on our network of contact and you. Post anything you hear to this blog entry or call the sports dept. at (254) 757-5710.

No time for preamble.

  • Waco High vs. Lancaster: 1660-AM (KRZI) at Lancaster
  • China Spring vs. Burnet: 1010-AM (KBW) at Leo B. in Killeen

Welcome to The 5th Quarter for Week 11!

In addition to our high school ticker and constantly updated scoreboard of area finals, those of us who spend Friday nights collecting info in the Trib newsroom will try to highlight the standout performances, big upsets, surprising stats and any other interesting tidbits that cross our desks.

But that’s only half the story. We’re stuck indoors — but you’re out there, at more than 50 football games every week. So we want you to write! Comment on the post with anything from on or off the field that’s weird, unusual, spectacular, hilarious or downright interesting, so that all the Centex high school football fans can get the full scoop on what’s going on.
