LIVE BLOG: Lorena-Westwood, Abbott-Penelope

9:58 PM: One last note: According to the playoff history on texasfootball.com, this is Lorena’s first playoff win since defeating Stinnett West Texas, 22-0, in the 1989 Class 2A state semifinals.

Lorena went on to lose to Groveton, 20-13, in the state championship game.

9:52 PM: It’s all over. Lorena wins, 24-14. Look for Chad Conine’s full report tonight on wacotrib.com or in the morning paper.

And remember to refresh this blog throughout Friday night’s action, as we provide updates on the Midway, Waco High, China Spring and Reicher games, along with any other reports we can find.

9:49 PM: Lorena may have locked up its first playoff win in a long time. Josh Sampson kicked a 26-yard field goal to give Lorena a 24-14 lead with 1:05 left.

9:47 PM: Lorena is driving with 2:18 left in the fourth quarter. The Leopards got the ball at their own 31 with 8:05 left and have run almost six minutes off the clock, Chad Conine reports. If they can score here, it’s pretty much over.

9:23 PM: Lorena is driving to midfield with a 21-14 lead at the start of the fourth quarter. A score here would go a long way to putting the game away for the Leopards.

If Lorena holds on, it will apparently advance to play Carthage, which we’re told is leading Tatum, 62-14, at halftime tonight.

9:19 PM: It’s all over in West. Abbott defeats Penelope, 61-14, in a game stopped on the 45-point mercy rule with 1:24 remaining in the third quarter.

Abbott (11-0) will next play Lometa, the District 16 runner-up that had a bye this week, at a time, date and place to be determined.

Penelope finishes 7-4.

9:15 PM: Lorena has retaken the lead. Lorena QB Tyler Stewart threw a flat pass to Dowdle, who broke a tackle and went 50 yards for a TD. Lorena 21, Westwood 14, with 5:07 left in the third.

8:42 PM: Abbott took control of Penelope in the second quarter and now leads 41-14 at halftime. Brian Price has two touchdown runs, and Hunter Johnson has a TD run and kickoff return for a touchdown.

Abbott beat Penelope 58-13 in nondistrict, and we could be headed for a similar score. The Panthers, ranked No. 2 by sixmanfootball.com, would play No. 1 Calvert in the third round if both teams continue to win.

8:34 PM: Lorena and Westwood are tied at halftime, 14-14. Lorena’s Jon Bennett was carried off the field late in the half and didn’t return in the second quarter. He has been a workhorse for the Leopards all season.

8:29 PM: Lorena’s Chase Snodgrass recovered a fumble in Westwood’s end of the field. But the Leopards missed a 34-yard field goal attempt. Westwood now has it inside its own 30 with less than a minute left in the half. Still 14-14.

8:09 PM: Westwood ties it on a one-yard touchdown run by Morrow. 14-14, 8:11 left in second quarter.

8:03 PM: Dowdle set up Lorena’s second score by running 29 yards on a reverse pass that turned into a reverse scramble. Evan Ward ran two yards for the touchdown. Lorena 14, Westwood 7, 11:44 left in the second quarter.

8 PM: Lorena’s Colby Gordon recovered a fumble on the kickoff. Lorena starts the second quarter with a 2nd and four at the Westwood 31.

7:57 PM: Abbott leads Penelope, 15-8, at the end of the first quarter. Abbott has run only four offensive plays, while Penelope is using up most of the play clock before each snap to maintain ball control.

7:55 PM: Lorena answers with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Stewart to Matt Dowdle. PW 7, Lorena 7, 22 seconds left in the first quarter.

7:51 PM: Palestine Westwood scores in a flash. Lorena took the ball first and drove into Westwood territory before Jon Bennett fumbled after gaining 10 yards on a screen pass. Scott Starr recovered for the Panthers at the Westwood 41 and on the next play, D.J. Morrow ran 59 yards for a touchdown. Westwood 7, Lorena 0, 8:06 left in the first quarter.

We’re starting off the high school football playoffs tonight, with live coverage from Chad Conine at the Lorena-Palestine Westwood game at Waco ISD Stadium and updates from the Abbott-Penelope game in West from John Hillman.

As a Rocket fan, I was embarrassed by the way the Robinson kids acted in the stands. Lorena should not be the target of our emotions. The Robinson football team should have not left our play-off destiny in the hands of others!
