11:44 PM: 25-1A tiebreaker: Chilton def. Evant tonight, so Bosqueville, Meridian and Chilton all finish 3-2 for a three-way tie for second.
In the procedure, Bosqueville won the 3-way coin flip and was declared “in”. So it’s the head-to-head matchup between Meridian and Chilton to determine the final spot, which goes to the Pirates, who beat the Yellowjackets 30-15 on Oct. 24.
Goldthwaite is the district champ despite losing to Meridian tonight, and they go D-I.

11:00 PM: Hamilton delivers in their do-or-die game, 34-21 over Hico. The Bulldogs are in and Crawford is out after dropping a 27-13 shocker at Moody tonight.
10:56 PM: Here are a few playoff matchups we’ve got so far:
- China Spring vs. Burnet is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Killeen
- Reicher, which won district, will play at 7:30 next week at home vs. TBA
- Glen Rose vs. Llano, 7:30 p.m. Friday @ Cove
10:46 PM: Just to clarify, La Vega is D-I out of 19-3A. D-II is Mexia (2nd) and Lorena (3rd).
China Spring, Glen Rose and West out of 7-3A.
10:30 PM: Waco High 42-13, final. 16-4A playoffs reps are Midway, Ennis, Waxahachie and Waco High.
10:28 PM: Connallly’s Stanley Barnes scores on a 20-yard pass from Torrance Williams (Nick Botello kick). 1:02 left and the Cadets trail 43-31.
Stay tuned for pairings.
Class 3A Division I
La Vega (8-2) vs. Brownsboro (6-4), TBA
Class 3A Division II
West (5-5) vs. Liberty Hill (10-0)
10:24 PM: Dwight Batts gets in the end zone for Waco High on a 30-yard run. Ernesto Guevara’s kick makes it 42-13 Lions with 1:39 left. Waco High officially ties up a playoff spot.
10:19 PM: Robinson: Boone Weiss ices this one for Robinson on a 1-yard run. Martinez pass fails, but the Rockets lead 43-24 with 1:38 left. Looks like Robinson is headed to the playoffs at 2-3 in district.
10:10 PM: Ruben Martinez gets another TD for Robinson, this one on a 10-yard run. Kick blocked. 37-24 Rockets, 6:29 4th.
10:06 PM: China Spring goes 10-0, by the way. 33-7 win over Gatesville
10:05 PM: Moody upends Crawford, 27-13, we’re hearing. Wow! Hamilton can get into the playoffs with a win over Hico in the Hamilton County Grudgefest (TM).
Jim Barnes notes that Moody ends the season on a 2-game winning streak. Go Bearcats!
10:04 PM: The word on the street is that Lorena beat La Vega, 20-13. If true, the Leopards are in the playoffs — and it doesn’t matter what Robinson does. The Pirates go D-I.
10:01 PM: Connally gets within a TD on Nick Botello’s 30-yard field goal with 9:08 left. Robinson leads 31-24.
9:56 PM: Waxahachie recovers another Midway fumble, the Panthers’ 5th turnover on the night, and Andrew Kindred scores on a 1-yard run to close to within 34-21. Then, the Indians recover an onside kick and are trying to score again from near midfield with 1:36 left in the game.
9:55 PM: Bronshae’Keon Dugas puts Waco High by 2 scores now, making it 28-13 on a 1-yard run. 11:03 left in this one.
9:54 PM: In the Metroplex, Corsicana has finally gone ahead of Cleburne, 28-21. And Ennis is up 50-13 on University.
9:50 PM: McGregor knocks off Troy, 19-0 final. And Waco High is still up 21-13 after a scoreless 3rd quarter.
9:43 PM: Speaking of spirited, how about these Robinson Rockets? It’s looking good as Boone Weiss hauls in a crucial 36-yard TD pass from Ruben Martinez. Kick fails and they lead Connally 31-21. 3:21 3rd. (That’s a lot of 3’s, 2’s and 1’s.)
9:42 PM: It matters not a whit, but Teague and Franklin are having a spirited battle as the Lions go ahead 24-21 in the 4th. Teague’s already wrapped up the Div. I berth and Franklin, undefeated in district so far, will be the top seed in D-II.
9:37 PM: The Corsicana Daily Sun reports that Dawson beat Axtell, 7-0, to earn bragging rights (but nothing else) in 21-1A, as both teams are headed to the playoffs. Axtell had already clinched Div. I representation as Dawson is the 2 seed in D-II behind Itasca.
9:36 PM: McGregor QB Larry Smith connects with Raul Olvera for a 32-yard score. The Bulldogs’ signal caller is doing it all tonight. Run fails, and it’s 19-0 McGregor over Troy with 4:04 remaining.
9:30 PM: Robinson’s Justin Brace goes 72 yards — on a screen pass, no less — from Ruben Martinez for a Rocket TD. The run fails, though, so they’re up 25-21 on Connallywith a bunch of game left: 10:40 in the 3rd.
9:27 PM: Some six-man fun: Walnut Springs wins district 15 in Div. II of 6-man with a 54-8 win over Morgan, who finishes out of the playoffs. Walnut gets a bye in the first round and Leveretts Chapel is 2nd.
District 13 (I) champion Abbott beats Blum 59-14, to finish district play undefeated. The Panthers get the winner of the Penelope-Oakwood game tonight (presumably the Wolverines) in bi-district next week.
9:23 PM: John Hubert, 73 yards for the score. Wow-ee. He’s got 224 yards on the night and his 4th TD of the game. A bad snap and the kick gets blocked. Midway leads 34-14. Chad says that was his 30th carry of the night.
9:19 PM: McGregor QB Larry Smith scores the second touchdown of the game on a 6-yard run. Kick’s no good, so the Bulldogs lead Troy 13-0 with 10:01 to play.
9:17 PM: Uh, we hear that Lorena was leading La Vega 14-10 close to halftime. Remember: if the Leopards win, they’re in, period.
9:10 PM: <redstripe>Hooray, points!</redstripe> McGregor’s Larry Smith breaks off a 60-yard TD run (finally!). Bulldogs lead 7-0 with 4:39 left in the 3rd.
9:06 PM: Waco High halftime report: Waco High scored two touchdowns in 29 seconds early in the second quarter, propelling them to a 21-13 lead over Midlothian at halftime.
With 8:58 left in the first half, Toylon Clark went nine yards for a score that made it 14-6. On the second play of Midlothian’s next drive, Waco High’s Andrew Weaver slapped the ball out of quarterback Bryce Petty’s hand, and the Lions recovered at the Panther 24. On the next play, Waco High quarterback Kollin Kahler found a leaping Denzel Mitchell on a fade pattern down the left sideline for the touchdown and a 21-6 lead.
Petty, who was 21-for-27 passing for 195 yards, led the Panthers on three long drives, but Midlothian didn’t find the end zone until 3:30 left in the first half. That score was a seven-yarder from Petty to Dylan Fowler on fourth-and-goal. Bronshae’Keon Dugas scored the game’s first TD on a one-yard blast to give Waco High a 7-3 lead with 7:50 left in the first quarter.
Midlothian ran 46 plays to only 20 for Waco High in the first half and held a 232-159 advantage in total offense. — Jason Orts
9:05 PM: Chad Conine called in to check on some scores, and despite Midway’s 28-14 lead at the half, he says it’s the most inconsistent 2 quarters of football he’s seen the Panthers play this year. They’ve fumbled twice and thrown an INT. But I guess the numbers in lights are all that matter.
9:03 PM: Jim Barnes is rounding up playoff pairings tonight, and here’s one that’s set in stone in Division I of Class 2A: Troy vs. Godley.
8:56 PM: We appreciate the nice ladies at KNES-FM in Fairfield who call us with some scores every Friday night. They let us know that Normangee is leading Lovelady at the half in the fight for 3rd place in 22-1A. Lovelady is the big school among the 4 possible playoff contenders, so if they lose, Mart goes Div. I. If they win, Mart goes Div. II along with Bremond, who’ll go small-school regardless. (The Tigers face state powerhouse Itasca if they’re the No. 2 seed [if Mart also goes D-II] in the small bracket.)
8:50 PM: Robinson’s not going away: Justin Brace scores on a 1-yard run at the 0:27 mark before the half. Michael Wagner’s kick makes it just 21-19 Connally.
One thing to bear in mind here is that if Robinson doesn’t win and misses the playoffs, that puts La Vega in Division I. Which means that drool-worthy rematch with China Spring would loom in the big school state title game.
8:49 PM: Waco High’s up 8 at the half. 21-13.
8:46 PM: What’s up with scoreless games? I guess Dawson and Axtell are just fighting for playoff seeding at this point, but 0-0 at the half isn’t an encouraging sign for either team.
8:41 PM: We’ve got trickeration: Connally fakes a field goal and D’Andre Simmons hauls in a 21-yard TD pass from Torrance Williams. Cadets lead 21-12 with 3:42 left.
8:37 PM: Midlothian is hanging around: Dylan Fowler scores on a 5-yard pass from Bryce Petty. Vince Frawley’s kick brings the Panthers to within 21-13 behind, 3:30 left in the half.
8:36 PM: Cleburne now up 14-7, according to the Dallas Morning News. The good folks at News Channel 25 tell me that Ennis leads University, 36-6, as well.
8:34 PM: China Spring’s James French kicks an easy 20-yard FG to make it 20-0 Cougars with 2 seconds left in the half. No shenanigans in 7-3A, looks like.
8:30 PM: Robinson’s Ruben Martinez has some wheels, too, as he scores on a 44-yard QB run (conversion pass no good) to make it 14-12 at 7:51 2nd. Torrance Williams’ 3rd interception set up that run.
8:28 PM: 16-4A watch: Cleburne holds the early lead on Corsicana, 7-0, after a quarter. Hat tip to our friends a the Corsicana Daily Sun for their live scoreboard on Friday nights.
8:23 PM: Waco High’s Denzel Mitchell gives the Lions some breathing room with a 24-yard TD grab pass from Kollin Kahler. 21-6 after Ernesto Guevara’s kick. 8:29 2nd. Jason Orts: Waco High takes one play to score after Petty’s fumble gives it possession at the Midlothian 24. Mitchell’s defender was step for step with him on a fade pattern down the left sideline, but never looked back for the ball and Mitchell leapt and made the catch in the end zone.
8:22 PM: Andrew Monrial gets Robinson on the board with a 22-yard pass from QB Ruben Martinez. A high snap, though, stymies the Rockets and they trail 14-6 to Connally. 10:59 2nd.
8:21 PM: A muffed kick by the Indians, and John Hubert takes advantage. 1-yard plunge makes it 28-14 Panthers at the 2:51 mark.
8:20 PM: I’ll hesitate to say this is an ugly game, but McGregor and Troy are in a scoreless tie, already at the half. Both teams love to pound the ball, and the clock runs pretty fast in that situation. Troy has 6 first downs while McGregor has 3.
8:15 PM: Jason Orts reports from Bagby Avenue: Toylon Clark takes a pitch around right end, is stopped at the 3-yard line but fights through that tackle and into the end zone. Lions took advantage of short punt after a three-and-out by Midlothian. 9-yard TD run makes it 14-6 Waco High at the 8:58 mark in the half.
8:14 PM: Don’t get too comfortable, Midway: Waxahachie’s Davion Donalson returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards. 9:24 2nd.
8:12 PM: Connally’s Wade Smith gives the Cadets a 2-score lead on a 17-yard scoring run at the 0:59 mark in the 1st.
Brian Bateman reports that both teams have a combined 6 penalties for 60 yards with3 interceptions and a fumble … all in a fun-filled first quarter.
8:06 PM: Midway’s offensive line is mauling the Indians up front, according to the radio guys. But the Panthers do have 2 turnovers on the night. Nevertheless, John Hubert scores again (5-yard run) to make it 21-7 Midway.
8:04 PM: Midlothian’s Vince Frawley boots another field goal to narrow it to a 1-point lead for Waco High. 2:20 1st quarter. Jason Orts says it was another long drive for the Panthers at 11 plays, 74 yards. Bryce Petty was a perfect 5-of-5 this time for 48 yards. At least the Lions’ defense is stiffening at the right time, but Petty has nearly 100 yards now. That’s gotta be a bit of a concern for Johnny Tusa’s boys.
7:54 PM: Waxahachie has only given up 17 points per game this season and 20 per in district, but they’ve already allowed 14 in the first quarter to the relentless Midway Panther attack. Todd Glaesmann’s 1-yard run gives the red, white and blue a 14-7 lead with 3:25 left in the 1st.
7:53 PM: China Spring is coming out a little sluggish, but still leads 10-0 after a 1-yard Brian Bell run and a James French FG. The Cougars’ve limited Gatesville to 2 first downs in the first quarter.
7:49 PM: Waco High didn’t put up with that junk for long. Quarterback Kollin Kahler showed his elusive speed (apparently) with a 54-yard run (!) on an option keeper to the Midlothian 1-yard line. Bronshae’Keon Dugas punched it in for 6. Ernesto Guevara’s kick makes it 7-3 Lions. 7:50 1st.
7:47 PM: Midlothian draws first blood on Waco High as Vince Frawley kicks a 27-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. The Panthers ran an efficient 12-play, 70-yard drive that took 3:42 off the clock. QB Bryce Petty was an efficient 5-of-7 for 47 yards. 8:18 1st quarter.
7:46 PM: John Who-bert? Oh yeah, we’ve heard of him. He only went for 303 yards last week vs. The High. He starts off tonight with a 38-yard TD run. Panthers tie things up with Waxahachie with 9:08 left in the 1st.
7:43 PM: Rockets are in trouble so far: Connally’s Stanley Barnes breaks off a 44-yard TD run and Nick Botello’s kick makes it 7-0 Connally. 9:43 1st. Remember, Robinson’s gotta win to force a tie for 3rd place.
7:39 PM: Midway down early as Waxahachie’s Dexter Chandler picks up a fumble and returns it 27 yards for a TD. 11:38 1st.
I’ve gotta admit, I’m a sucker for the weird situations. And there are a few in play tonight that defy all conventional wisdom:
- If Waco High were to lose to Midlothian, they’d drop into a 3-way tie with the Panthers and Corsicana (assuming the Tigers handle Cleburne), all teams at 3-4. The cap in 16-4A is 18 points, so Corsicana is at 0, Waco High is +18 on the Tigers and Midlothian is -18. So even if Waco High does lay an egg, they need to make sure it’s by less than 18. Otherwise it’s a 3-way coin flip.
- The only interesting 7-3A scenario at this point would have Gatesville upsetting China Spring to even have a shot at the postseason, but West needs to lose at Whitney (0-4, 0-9), which isn’t likely. So barring something bizarre, the Trojans are the 3rd team here.
- We thought the big story out of 19-3A this year was the emergence of Lorena, but Robinson wanted a big storyline as well. The Rockets really tested Groesbeck and blew out the aforementioned Leopards, 38-12, last week to enter the playoff discussion at 1-3 in district. With Robinson likely to beat winless Connally this week and Lorena and Groesbeck, both 2-2, likely to lose to La Vega and Mexia (respectively), we could easily have a logjam at 2-3 for the last berth. An upset by either of those 2-2 teams (but not both) would put that team in automatically; otherwise, it’s a 3-way tie for 2nd. And Lorena does have an easy path, too, if Robinson loses (they’d own the head-to-head over Groesbeck).
- Not a huge number of scenarios in 16-2A: McGregor and undefeated Troy face off tonight for the district title. Crawford oughta knock off Moody, but if they don’t, Hamilton needs to beat Hico in the historic cross-county rivalry to get in.
OK, guys. It’s all on the line. In or out. Black or white. One more week or Friday nights free.
Click here for all the detailed playoff scenario info, compiled by our own Jason Orts. If a playoff berth is based on a coin flip, point differential or 3-point shooting competition, Jason’s been all over it all week. He also picks this week’s big games in his preview column every week.
Welcome to The 5th Quarter for Week 10!
In addition to our high school ticker and constantly updated scoreboard of area finals, those of us who spend Friday nights collecting info in the Trib newsroom will try to highlight the standout performances, big upsets, surprising stats and any other interesting tidbits that cross our desks.
But that’s only half the story. We’re stuck indoors — but you’re out there, at more than 50 football games every week. So we want you to write! Comment on the post with anything from on or off the field that’s weird, unusual, spectacular, hilarious or downright interesting, so that all the Centex high school football fans can get the full scoop on what’s going on.
