The 5TH QUARTER: Oct. 31, 2008

12:05 AM: We don’t have a Evant-Meridian final (call us, guys!) so it’s a little hard to sort out right now. We know Goldthwaite is the class of it, and they’re the big school. Bosqueville dropped to 2-2 and Chilton improved to 2-2 tonight.

Likely scenario: Meridian def. Evant tonight, going to 3-1 and 1-3, respectively.

Meridian will likely lose in Week 10 to Goldthwaite, to go to 3-2; Bosqueville will likely beat V. Mills in Week 10 to go to 3-2; and Chilton-Evant is somewhat of a toss-up. If Chilton wins that one, they’ll also to to 3-2. Among the 3, the 15-point cap erases all the margins of victory. As Jason explained in his preview column, a 3-way coin flip determines the “champion”, who is safe; then the head-to-head result among the next 2 determines the playoff berth.

Unlikely-er scenario: Evant beats Meridian tonight; both those teams will be 2-2 for a 4-way tie with Bosqueville and Chilton. Meridian likely loses to Goldthwaite in Week 10 (goes to 2-3), Bosqueville beats Valley Mills (goes to 3-2); the Chilton-Evant game decides the last playoff spot.

Obviously, Meridian beating Goldthwaite in Week 10 would make them 3-2 and back in a tiebreak with Bosqueville and Chilton (or Evant if Evant can win out). So that would come down to the theoretial Evant win over Meridian tonight (again, we don’t have the final score) to see if that goes to a 3-way coinflip as well.

11:59 PM: Lovelady vs. Normangee, both at 2-2, is the word in 22-1A. That’s the matchup for 3rd, with Mart (4-0) and Bremond (3-1) both already in. Lovelady’s the big school here, so if they beat Normangee, they go D-I. If not, it’s Mart.

11:48 PM: 21-1A is pretty simple, even if Itasca loses. 2nd and 3rd place Axtell and Dawson (each 4-1) face off next week. Itasca (5-0) plays No. 4 Italy (3-2). So Italy is out unless it knocks beats Itasca, in which case you’d have Itasca at 5-1, Axtell or Dawson at 5-1 and then both Italy and the Axtell-Dawson loser at 4-2. But Italy lost to both those teams. So it’s much ado.

Axtell is the big school here by a whole 6 students over Itasca.

11:41 PM: For 20-2A, it’s 1 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 4 next week: Franklin (4-0) plays Teague (3-1 — both teams are in the playoffs). The big story is Hearne suddenly entering the playoff conversation by knocking off Teague tonight; they’re 2-2 along with Rosebud-Lott. Those 2 teams square off next week: the winner is 3-2 and into the playoffs.

Teague goes D-I in this one.

11:31 PM: In 16-2A, Troy and McGregor are guaranteed playoff spots at this point, though it could get interesting in the tiebreaker next week. The Bulldogs and Trojans face off next week, which will likely make McGregor 5-2 and Troy 7-0 with a Trojan win.

If Crawford beats Moody and Hamilton beats Hico next week, they’ll also be 5-2. In the 3-way tiebreak, McGregor has +28 vs. Crawford and -3 vs. Hamilton. Crawford also beat Hamilton by 14, so Hamilton would appear to be out amongst the 3. (If Hico beats Hamilton, they’ll both wind up 4-3, knocking Hamilton out of contention.)

Troy is the big team here.

11:21 PM: In 19-3A, La Vega is still way better than your team. Period. Mexia is at 3-1 and the likely choice for 2nd place, especially if they beat Groesbeck next week. That’d make the Goats 2-3; if Robinson wins again, they’re 2-3. And you assume Lorena will lose to La Vega in Week 10, making them 2-3.

Because of the point differential between the 3 teams, I’ve got Robinson at +16, Groesbeck at 0 and Lorena at -16. So it would appear the Goats’ only chance is to knock off Mexia next week. That would make both teams 3-2 and tied for second in the district, leaving (presumably) 2-3 Lorena and Robinson out.

If Robinson doesn’t win out next week and Groesbeck falls to Mexia, it would pit Lorena vs. Groesbeck for the No. 3 spot, leaving the Goats out due to the head-to-head.

11:18 PM: District 7-3A seems to be wrapping up nicely. China Spring is undefeated and Glen Rose is 3-1; we assume both those teams win next week. West and Gatesville are 2-2 after the Trojans knocked off the Hornets, 44-33 tonight. So West would own any tiebreaker if both teams do the same thing next week — but Gatesville will likely lose to China next week while West will likely beat Whitney. China Spring is the D-I team there.

10:48 PM: So, let’s talk standings:

16-4A: Midway goes to 6-0. Ennis and Waxahachie 2nd at 5-1. Waco High’s 3-3 and Corsicana drops to 2-4 along with Midlothian.

Ennis, Waxahachie and Midway are all in. The bizarro scenario here involves Midlothian beating Waco High by more the the cap limit (unknown at this point). Waco High already owns a cap-worthy amount over Corsicana, and Corsicana is +18 cap over Midlothian (which we’re assuming is more than the cap). So if Midlothian were to blow out Waco High — extremely unlikely — it could go to a 3-way coin flip or something.

10:45 PM: Legit upset, I think: Hearne 38, Teague 23.

In 1A, Dawson scores a late TD to hold off Italy, 35-27. Dawson outghta be in.

10:24 PM: Rosebud-Lott has won, 23-16. We had that one as the Cougars 9-7 behind in the 4th, so a bit of a heart-stopper there for R-Lott.

10:23 PM: West has gone up 44-26 on Gatesville, so that 7-3A stuff is pretty locked down. China Spring will go D-I and face Burnet. Glen Rose and West will go D-II, with West presumably getting Liberty Hill and Glen Rose getting Wimberley.

10:19 PM: Mark Bell finally sends in the 2nd string after Reece Meador puts the Cougars up 56-34 on Glen Rose with a 29-yard TD catch from Brian Bell. 4:32 left.

10:17 PM: And Midway runs its record to 6-0 in district, 8-1 overall, with a bruising 26-14 win over Waco High. They’ll face Waxahachie next week for the outright district crown. And Johnny Tusa’s boys are still in good shape for the playoffs at 3-3.

10:16 PM: Reicher has just demoloished Bryan St. Joseph, 65-3 tonight. Guess the Cougars are back in the swings. District championship assured at this point.

10:15 PM: University gets its first 16-4A win in a big way with a 41-6 win over Cleburne tonight. WTG, Trojans!

In other 16-4A action, Ennis still holds a 24-17 lead on Midlothian at last check, and Waxahachie is up 28-14 on Corsicana in the 4th.

10:14 PM: Heartbreaker for the High: Lions throw a TD pass that gets called back for a penalty. Midway leads, 26-14, with 0:38 left.

10:11 PM: Vyonte Guess gets a huge fumble recovery on the kickoff for Midway. Two huge turnovers for the Panthers tonight. That could be the end of hope for Waco High.

10:10 PM: China Spring still leads after Glen Rose’s Jorge Espino scores on a 15-yard pass from Thompson. 49-34 Cougars.

10:09 PM: We hear Consol did indeed upset Copperas Cove, 31-27 final.

10:08 PM: Although Todd Glaesmann has done the scoring, including a 1-yard run to put Midway up 26-14 with 2:34 to play, John Hubert is still over 300 yards on the night.

10:06 PM: Cody Aycock is the hero for West tonight: an 88-yard breakaway puts the Trojans up 37-26 with 2:47 to play.

10:05 PM: Palestine Westwood has won, 28-14, in a game where they trailed 14-0 in the 3rd.

10:03 PM: Mexia is kneeling this one out. It’ll be 33-14 Blackcats final — making Connally the only team officially out of postseason contention, I believe, in 19-3A.

10:01 PM: Probably safe to say Robinson’ll win this one going away: Matt Walker’s 23 pass from Ruben Martinez, and a Martinez 2-pt run, makes it 38-12 Rockets. Still 8 minutes or so left, though.

10:00 PM: Gatesville’s Cody Sheets scores against West on a 9-yard run (kick failed), and now that one is suddenly 30-26 Trojans. 5:47 left in this antacid-popper.

9:59 PM: Crawford has gone final at 42-28. That pretty much puts Crawford in the playoffs with Troy. Not sure about McGregor at this point, as they’re expected to lose next week and win tonight.

9:58 PM: OK, here’s a legitimate upset alert: Leon (0-3, 1-7) is leading Rosebud-Lott, 9-7, in the 4th.

9:55 PM: An upset brewing in 20-2A as Hearne leads Teague, 23-15, in the 4th. The Lions ought to still be good for a playoff spot, but I’m sure Rosebud-Lott or Hearne winning out (they face off next week) would complicate that.

9:54 PM: Can Midway hold off Waco High? Ahmad Dixon’s doing his darndest, intercepting a reverse pass attempt by Waco High and returning it about 20 yards.

Midway has the ball at midfield with about 8 minutes left, leading 19-14.

9:52 PM: Crawford’s Chane Lynch sneaks in it from the 1 with 44 seconds remaining. Note that The Pirates are now leading by the 10 they need to erase the point differential with Hamilton for the last playoff spot out of 16-2A. Score is 42-28 Crawford.

9:50 PM: Dawson has taken a 28-27 lead on Italy, according to our friends at the Corsicana Daily Sun. That’s a big game in 21-1A.

9:48 PM: Gatesville’s trying to control its playoff destiny as they close to within 10 on Josh Janisch’s 13-yard TD catch from Clark (Worley kick). 10 minutes left in this one as the Hornets are trailing the Trojans 30-20.

9:47 PM: Glen Rose’s Derek Thompson scores on a 1-yard runto bring Glen Rose to within 42-27. Cougars still lead in this one with 2:01 left in the 3rd.

9:45 PM: Sighted: John Hubert. The Midway star emerges suddenly with a huge 86-yard TD run to give the Panthers the lead. Lots of football left in Hewitt, though, with 10:43 left in the game. The PAT fails, curiously, so it’s 19-14.

9:44 PM: Jacob Blancett hits Daniel Post with 34-yard touchdown pass to put Crawford up 35-28 on Hamilton with 1:53 left to play.

9:42 PM: Waco High still leads 14-13 after 3 quarters. The Lions blocked a Midway field goal that would have given the Panthers the lead with about 1:20 left in the 3rd.

9:41 PM: This Cove-Consol game has been a see-saw all day. Bulldawgs now take the lead, 27-24.

9:41 PM: Lance Bell scores on a TD run to put Mexia up 34-14. The Blackcats are controlling their own destiny in this district where it seems like everyone else can lose out and wind up 2-3 and in a royal mess for a playoff spot.

9:37 PM: Matt Dowdle’s 12-yard pass from Tyler Stewart gives the Leopards their 2nd score of the night. Lorena still trails Robinson, though, 30-12 after the pass failed. 3:08 in the 3rd.

9:36 PM: West’s Kevin Khoury keeps the Trojans well ahead, putting them up 30-13 on a 23-yard pass from QB Anthony. 2:05 3rd.

9:35 PM: A dynamite little-talked-out game going on in Fairfield tonight: the Eagles (1-2 in 20-3A) have been shutting out district-leading Palestine Westwood (3-0) all night. But the Westwooders have just stormed back to tie it in the 4th. It’s now 14-all.

9:33 PM: Brian Bell does some actual scoring for China Spring, finding the end zone on a 6-yard run. Cougars now are up 42-20 with 7:02 left.

9:30 PM: On that 19-3A scenario, Jim Barnes tells me that if Robinson does get in (they’ll have to beat Connally next week), it will bump La Vega back into Division II because the Rockets have about 100 more students than the Pirates.

If Lorena wins tonight, La Vega would be the Division I representative.

Of course, Lorena can still get in if Connally beats Robinson next week.

9:29 PM: Robinson gets to 30 points on a Ruben Martinez 4-yard run. Run failed, so it remains 30-6. 6:39 in the 3rd. Remember, Robinson needs to win by at least 10 to have any chance at the last playoff spot out of 19-3A.

9:28 PM: Connally pulls off a successful fake punt, despite Mexia reading the play.

9:25 PM: In the 16-4A watch, Ennis is now up 24-17 on Midlothian. Waxahachie still leads Corsicana 21-14.

Italy has a 21-14 halftime lead over Dawson.

9:24 PM: John Hillman in Crawford: Bryce Murphy goes over the left side from 3 yards out. Crawford 28 - Hamilton 28; 9:36 left to play.

9:22 PM: Gatesville’s Shane Clark brings the Hornets back within 2 scores on a 4-yard run. The 2-point pass fails, though, and West leads 23-13 at the 8:25 mark in the 3rd.

9:19 PM: A bit of confusion as Mexia would appear to have scored on a 79-yard TD run by RB Doug Gentry, but a sideline infraction penalty will be marked off on the kickoff. That’s his 2nd long TD run of the night, and he’s got 212 yard so far. The score stands: 27-14 Blackcats.

9:18 PM: Oh my, that Toylon Clark has found a hole in the Midway defense: a 67-yard TD run makes it 14-13. 11:10 left in the 3rd.

9:16 PM: Mexia’s letting Connally hang around as QB Trae Davis tries to force a ball over the middle where he oughtn’t’ve. It’s tipped, and the Cadets have an INT.

9:15 PM: In 13-5A, a possible upset is brewing as Consol has been leading or tied with Cove for most of the game. The Dawgs are 8-0 and ranked in the top 10; the Tigers are 4-4 overall.

9:11 PM: Many things win ballgames — special teams, for example. Hamilton’s Ethan Cathey blocks a punt and returns it 10 yards for touchdown; then Garet Box runs for 2. Score’s back to looking normal as it’s Bulldogs 28 - Pirates 21 with 3:36 left in the third quarter.

9:05 PM: Crawford isn’t quite done yet: Bryce Murphy goes 43 yards off left tackle and takes a lead on Bobby Dunlap’s PAT. Kevin in the comments (thanks, Kevin!) says Crawford converted a 3rd-and-long in their own territory before the score. Pirates lead the Bulldogs 21-20 with 8:40 in the 3rd.

9:03 PM: 16-4A watch: Waxahachie leads Corisicana, 21-14, at the half.

And for those who care about such things, Lewisville Hebron is up 2 on Southlake Carroll, 16-14, at the break.

8:59 PM: John Hillman reports from Crawford: Hamilton opens the second half with a bang. Mason Burke runs for 64 yards on the first play to the 1. Two plays later, Burke bursts over from the 1. Garet Box runs for 2 points.

Hamilton 20, Crawford 14 with 10:46 left in the third quarter. A Pirate loss effectively eliminates them from the postseason.

8:51 PM: Our halftime 19-3A playoff glance has La Vega improving to 4-0 and Mexia grabbing 2nd place with a 3-1 record, assuming Lorena (2-1) continues to lose to Robinson. Groesbeck will drop to 2-2 with tonight’s loss to the Pirates (they’re currently getting shut out). Lorena owns the head-to-head over Groesbeck, which is bad news for the Goats as both teams are likely to lose next week (to La Vega and Mexia, respectively).

8:48 PM: Lorena has turned it over 4 times as Robinson leads 24-6 at the half.

8:44 PM: In 16-4A, Waxahachie has tied it with Corsicana, 14-14 in the 2nd.

8:43 PM: Mike Hicks keeps coming up big, this time on a 35-yard pass from Brian Bell. 1:24 mark as the Cougars lead 35-17.

8:42 PM: Waco High misses a 44-yard FG on the last play of the half. This certainly isn’t last week’s game for Midway, but they lead 13-7 at the break.

8:39 PM: The Ennis Lions have to wonder what snake has bitten ‘em: Midlothian goes up 17-16 with a field goal now.

8:37 PM: Travis Veselka shows why he’s got game on a 65-yard TD run for China Spring. Cougars are now up 28-17 with 3:03 left in the half.

8:36 PM: Will Scott Newberry score more points tonight than John Hubert? So far he has. Midway’s kicker boots a 44-yard FG to put the Panthers up 13-7. 0:27 left in the half.

8:35 PM: By the way, according to The Intern or the Porkchop or one of those guys, University was leading Cleburne, 20-0 in the 2nd quarter. Good for the Trojans.

8:32 PM: Glen Rose’s offense looks like it’s for real. This time it’s Ty Taylor on a 35-yard pass from Derek Thompson. Tigers’ve closed to within 21-17 with 4:25 left in the half.

8:31 PM: Mexia is clawing its way back as Trae Davis goes in from 19 yards out. Blackcats up on Connally, 20-14.

8:29 PM: West’s been oustcored 121-186 so far this year, but not in this game: Dalton Vannatta hauls in a 20-yard pass from Kelvin Anthony (kick failed). Trojans lead 23-7 at the 2:32 mark.

8:26 PM: Ennis takes a lead on Midlothian now, 16-14. You have a feeling the Lions might’ve just gotten a little mad.

8:25 PM: China’s Jerome Lloyd gets on the board with a 6-yard pass from Brian Bell. Cougars lead 21-10 now with 5:27 left.

8:25 PM: In 16-4A, Midlothian’s now up 14-8 in the 2nd; Corsicana leads 14-7. Upsets both, you’d think.

8:24 PM: Not forgetting about our 1As here: Italy leads Dawson, 13-0, after a quarter in the liekly deciding game for the 3rd-place spot in 21-1A.

8:22 PM: A huge play for Connally’s Jerry Johnson, as he breaks off an 81-yard TD run. The Cadets go up 14-13 on Mexia with 3:14 left in the half.

8:21 PM: Robinson keeps going for 2: Weiss scores on a 57-yard run and then pounds in the 2-point run. 3 TDs for the Rockets makes it 24-6 with 8:23 left.

8:20 PM: West extends its lead as Heath Harris scores on a 20-yard pass from Kelvin Anthony. Yerger kick makes it 17-7 over Gatesville. 7:23.

8:19 PM: Can’t keep Garet Box boxed in: Hamilton’s RB bolts 60 yards for a score. Two-point conversion fails, though, so the Bulldogs trail 14-12 at the 2:24 mark.

8:18 PM: Crawford extends its lead as Jacob Blancett hits Dustin Dorris on a 37-yard touchdown pass. Pirates 14, Hamilton 6. 3:51.

8:17: Mexia’s Cody Price scores on a 10-yard end around. PAT is wide, so the Blackcats lead Connally, 13-7.

8:17 PM: Glen Rose’s Tanner Tongate kicks a 29-yard field goal. 8:17 left. Trailing China Sprin, 14-10.

8:16 PM: Lorena narrows that point gap with a 3-yard Jon Bennett TD run. Pass failed, so it’s 16-6 Robinson with 9:07 left until the break.

8:15 PM: Presumably with John Hubert shut down, Todd Glaesmann is taking it on his shoulders: he puts Midway up 10-7 on a 1-yard TD run with 6:36 left in the half. The 2-sport star caught a 34-yard pass earlier in the drive.

8:09 PM: Midway’s Scott Newberry gets the Panthers on the board with a 28-yard field goal. 9:15 2nd as Waco High still leads, 7-3.

8:08 PM: Another 16-4A oddity, in that Corsicana is leading 14-7 over Waxahachie, according to DMN. The Tigers have to win out to force a 3-way tie (with the Indians and Waco High) for 3rd and make the playoffs. We think they have to win by 13 or more to get in over Waxahachie.

8:07 PM: China scores again on a 1-yard Hicks run. 11:55 in the 2nd. Cougars up 14-7 on Glen Rose.

8:06 PM: West’s Skylar Yerger boots a 29-yard FG with 1:05 left in the 1st. Trojans up 10-7 on Gatesville.

8:05 PM: The Dallas Morning News scoreboard says Midlothian takes an early 7-0 lead on Ennis. Um. I don’t think Ennis can miss the playoffs at this point, but dropping out of 2nd in the district would be a big shock.

7:59 PM: Robinson goes up 16-0 on Boone Weiss’ 1-yard. run. Andrew Monrail gets the conversion on a 2-point pass from Ruben Martinez. 1:24 1st.

Rockets are keeping their playoff hopes alive, althought they must beat Connally next week to get in. That assumes that the top 2 teams in 19-3A, La Vega and Mexia, take care of business against the other playoff contenders (Lorena and Groesbeck).

7:57 PM: Hamilton answers Crawford in this tough 16-2A matchup. Jackson BeShears goes 35 yards an option play, but extra point is no good. Pirates lead 7-6 after a quarter.

7:56 PM: Mexia-Connally is knotted a 7 after a quarter.

7:55 PM: A reminder of what’s at stake in this Robinson-Lorena tilt: Robinson has to win by 9 to get into a three-way coin flip with Lorena and Groesbeck, or by 10 or more to get in as the third-place team. So, of course, the Rockets start out going for 2 after Ruben Martinez’s 13-yard TD run. Martinez punches it in, and the Rockets are up 8-0. 2:35 1st.

7:51 PM: This might be the game that’s the biggest toss-up tonight, but Crawford strikes first. Jacob Blancett tosses a 6-yard scoring pass to Bryce Murphy for a 7-0 Pirate lead over Hamilton at the 3:17 mark in the 1st. The implications of this game are dire for Crawford: They need to win by 10 to even the point differential with the Bulldogs in the likely 3-way logjam with McGregor. I’ll refer you to Jason Orts’ preview column for the more-in-depth analysis.

7:50 PM: Gatesville evens things up with West on a C.L. Riddle 4-yard run. Hunter Worley kick makes it 7-7 at 5:58 in the 1st.

7:49 PM: China Spring wasn’t going to let that last. Mike Hicks streaks into the end zone on a 38-yard pass from Brian Bell. 5:25. All tied at 7.

7:45 PM: It’s a little too early for an upset alert, but Glen Rose currently leads China Spring, 7-0, after an 18-yard TD pass from Derek Thompson to Austin Eschbach.

7:44 PM: West goes up early, 7-0, on Cody Aycock’s 19-yard run. 9:19.

7:43 PM: Take nothing for granted when Johnny Tusa’s on the sideline. Midway goes 3-and-out to start the game, and Waco High drives on a short field after the punt. Keyshun Russell gets into the end zone on an 11-yard run (Ernesto Guevara kick), and the Lions are up 7-0 with 9:35 left in the 1st.

Didja know our sports guys pick every Central Texas football game every week? Well, they do, in our complete picks box. They average about 75-80% accuracy, so they know what they’re doing.

While games are just getting underway here, I’ll pass along a little tidbit from our sports editor, Jim Barnes: Those of us hoping (or not) for a China Spring-Liberty Hill 1 vs. 2 first-round showdown are gonna be disappointed. Burnet, which is bigger than Lib Hill, will likely secure the 3rd-place spot in 8-3A and go D-I. So if the Cougars also go D-I (if Gatesville misses the playoffs), they’ll get Burnet. If China goes D-II, they’ll get Wimberley and be on track to meet LH in the region final.

Here’s what’s on the radio tonight:

  • Glen Rose at China Spring: 1010-AM (KBW)
  • Waco High at Midway: 1660-AM (KRZI) and 89.9-FM (KSUR)
  • Robinson at Lorena: KWGW-FM (104.9)

It goes without saying, though I guess I’m about to at this point that most games in Week 9 are going to have playoff consequences. Jason Orts wraps up the dizzy spell-inducing scenarios in his weekly preview column, which I can’t recommend enough.

But outside of those high-intensity matchups, we seem to have an inordinate number of 1 vs. 2 or playoff team vs. playoff team squarings. And that’s fun to the nth degree. Here are the highlights:

  • Waco High @ Midway — The week’s premier matchup pits 2 teams who both figure to make the postseason. If Waco High pulls what would have to be considered an upset here, and Corsicana beat Waxahachie, it would make the 16-4A race pretty interesting with Waxahachie possibly needing to beat Midway in Week 10 to stay in the playoffs — depending on how that tiebreaker works in 16-4A.

  • La Vega @ Groesbeck — here’s a stat: Groesbeck has scored the fewest points in its district by far (168 vs. bottom-dwelling Connally’s 188, Robinson’s 199), they’ve given up 222 points, yet they’re 2-1 and right in the playoff race. Although you’d think Groesbeck is behind the 8-ball with La Vega this week and Mexia, the district stingiest non-Modoc defense, coming up next week. So the Goats’ll be pretty big Rocket and Blackcat fans tonight as Lorena and Connally host Robinson and Mexia, respectively.

  • No. 1’s vs. No. 2’s: 7-3A’s China Spring vs. Glen Rose; 19-3A’s La Vega vs. Groesbeck; 24-3A’s Cameron vs. Navasota; TAPPS 3-III’s Reicher vs. Bryan St. Joseph; 14-Six-man’s Penelope vs. Trinidad

  • Plus some compelling playoff-caliber matchups in Gatesville-West in 7-3A; Hamitlon-Crawford in a big-time 16-2A tilt; Dawson-Italy in a make-or-break game in 21-1A; similar situation in 25-1A’s Meridian-Evant faceoff; and a possibly interesting (but likely a blowout) with Blum at Milford in 6-man.

Welcome to The 5th Quarter for week 9!

In addition to our high school ticker and constantly updated scoreboard of area finals, those of us who spend Friday nights collecting info in the Trib newsroom will try to highlight the standout performances, big upsets, surprising stats and any other interesting tidbits that cross our desks.

But that’s only half the story. We’re stuck indoors — but you’re out there, at more than 50 football games every week. So we want you to write! Comment on the post with anything from on or off the field that’s weird, unusual, spectacular, hilarious or downright interesting, so that all the Centex high school football fans can get the full scoop on what’s going on.

Before you comment, please take a few moments to make sure that what you're saying is civil and respectful. We don't tolerate personal attacks, insults, name-calling, impersonations or generally hateful comments — they don't make for a pleasant (or productive) conversation. We want to raise the level of debate and encourage a wide diversity of viewpoints — and that means disagreeing without being disagreeable. If you wouldn't say it to your grandmother, you probably shouldn't say it here.
