The 5TH QUARTER: Oct. 24, 2008
SCOREBARD, etc.
10:30 PM: Minor upset alert: Chilton 30, Meridian 15.
10:26 PM: It’s official: Midway knocks off No. 6 in the state Ennis, 56-31.
Similar looking score for Reicher over Regents: 54-31.
10:23 PM: Oh, man! We’re hearing that Midlothian’s Marty Bennett hauled in a 44-yard pass from Bryce Petty with 2 1/2 minutes to play to go up 17-16 on University. Trojans can still win this one at the buzzer, though.
10:19 PM: Rosebud-Lott has poured it on Marlin, by the way. 34-14 now after it was a 1-score game pretty late.
10:19 PM: Paul Phillips 2 run for Austin Regents. Kick good. Reicher still leads comfortably, 54-31. 4:15 left.
10:11 PM: I’d say the Cougars won’t have to worry about making the playoffs. Nick Castillo’s 16-yard TD run and his PAT kick make it 54-24 Reicher. 6:44 left.
10:10 PM: John Hubert gets his seventh touchdown of the night with a 1 yd run. Midway 56, Ennis 24. 8:46 4th.
10:09 PM: Looks like that Rosebud-Marlin score was mis-reported. It was the other way around, and now the Cougars have gone up 28-14 with about 2 minutes left.
10:08 PM: Some 19-3A finals: Groesbeck 17, Connally 14; Mexia 49, Lorena 28.
10:05 PM: Ennis’s Tim Hearne scores on a 1-yard TD run. Midway leads, 49-24, with 9:28 left in the game.
10:03 PM: Kenneth Cluley works out the ol’ fibula on a 35-yard pass to Jameson Wells. Cougars up 47-24 with 8:34 left.
10:01 PM: Upset alert? Marlin 21, Rosebud-Lott 14 in the 4th.
9:52 PM: Chad Conine: Midway’s Hubert scored his sixth touchdown of the night — this one a three-yard run — to boost the Panthers to a 49-17 lead.
9:51 PM: Got an update from Midlothian that says University now leads, 13-7, in the 3rd.
9:48 PM: Mart 42, Bremond 7. Final. Wow.
9:46 PM: Austin Regents is hanging around as scores on a Josh Moore 27-yard pass to Carson Rice. Davidson kick is good. 40-26 Reicher, 0:16 in the 3rd.
9:43 PM: Reicher’s Jameson Wells scores on a 55-yard interception return. Castillo kick good. 40-17 Cougs.
9:42 PM: It’s a 200-yard performance for Midway’s John Hubert on his 28th carry. 2:26 in the 3rd.
9:38 PM: Justin in the comments says La Vega leads 28-14 after 3 over Robinson. That one’s being played in Bellmead this evening. Thanks, Justin.
9:37 PM: Some interesting 12-5A matchups as Temple and Bryan were all tied up at the half, 14-14, and Cove only holds a 10-point lead over Shoemaker, 24-14.
9:35 PM: Another turnover for Midway as they intercept a tipped ball. Midway’s Brandon Knapp tipped a DJ Bedik pass and Vyonte Guess ran under it to get the interception. About 6 left in the 3rd.
9:35 PM: Kenneth Cluley’s making his return in style, scoring on a 10-yard TD run. Nick Castillo’s kick is true. Cougs are up 33-17, at 2:58 in the third.
9:34 PM: Have a feeling Mart may be in the top 10 next week. Or maybe Bremond won’t be anymore. Either way, Nin Sharp’s 5-yard TD run puts the Panthers up 42-7 with 9:14 left.
9:29 PM: Regents strikes back against Reicher as Josh Moore tosses a 49-yard pass to Luke Moore. Hajaar kick good. Cougars still lead 26-17 with 6:15 left in the 3rd.
9:28 PM: Waco High has completely lost its focus early in the second half and allowed Corsicana to go 75 yards in 10 plays — all on the ground — for its first score of the night. Andey Means’ 6-yard run (kick failed) makes it 35-6 Lions. 3:54 3rd.
9:27 PM: After the O-line picks up a crucial 3rd down conversion by a few inches on a late push, the front guys open a huge hole for John Hubert’s 9-yard TD run. It’s now 42-17 with about 8 left.
9:24 PM: Another Ennis fumble? You bet! Midway recovers at the Ennis 20.
9:21 PM: Todd Glaesmann’s got some football skills, doesn’t he? The multisport star puts the Panthers up 35-17 on a 30-yard run around the end on a 3-play, 57-yard drive aided by an Ennis penalty. 10:57 3rd.
9:20 PM: Reicher’s running game gets going as Tracer McClinton finds the end zone on a 16-yard run. Castillo’s kick is good. 26-10 Cougars, 8:58 in the 3rd.
9:19 PM: Tight matchup in Midlothian: University leads the Panthers, 7-0, as the 2nd half gets underway.
9:13 PM: Just isn’t Bremond’s night. The Tigers’ fifth turnover of the night is LiDarral Bailey’s fumble, recovered by Mart’s Armando Jones in the end zone. 7:02 3rd. Panthers lead 35-7.
9:12 PM: This Groesbeck-Connally tilt looks like a good one, as the Goats hold a 10-0 lead at the half. Both teams have scored a decent amount, even in losses, in 19-3A play so far. So this is a bit unusual.
8:50 PM: Jason Orts’ halftime review of the Waco High game:
The Waco High Lions took advantage of prime field position and a dominating effort by their offensive line to grab a 35-0 lead over Corsicana at halftime at Waco ISD Stadium.
The Lions’ began their first four possessions in Corsicana territory and cashed in each time with scoring bursts of two and 31 yards from Bronshae’Keon Dugas, while Toylon Clark and Kollin Kahler added TD runs of 14 and 22 yards, respectively. A 53-yard pass from Kahler to Kevin Hill with 34 seconds left in the first half capped the scoring.
Waco High outgained Corsicana 249-56 in the first 24 minutes.
8:49 PM: Interesting scores courtesy of Fairfield radio station KNES, notably a 2nd-quarter score that has Groesbeck up 3-0 on Connally. Riesel’s also firmly in the game at 7-0 behind Lovelady in the 2nd.
Halftime scores are in the more predictable realm: Teague 40-0 over Leon; Italy 32, Wortham 0; Oakwood 45s Coolidge; and Fairfield’s playing a tight one over Athens, 12-0.
8:44 PM: Halftime. Midway leads 28-17 over Ennis. What a game so far!
8:42 PM: Midway holds Ennis kicks a field goal by kicker Colby Threet to make it 28-17 at the end of an 11-play, 76-yard drive.
And commenter Justin says that La Vega’s up 21-6 on Robinson at the half. Thanks for the update.
8:37 PM: Mart scores again with just 19 seconds left before halftime. It’s Xavier Williams connecting with Sean Farmer this time for a 45-yard TD pass. On a screen pass, Farmer spun out of a tackle at the 30 and took it the rest of the way.
8:36 PM: Waco High’s strong running game pays off with a play-action pass. Kevin Hill is wide open behind the defense, and Kollin Kahler hits him with a pass at about the 10 and he strolls into the end zone. — Jason Orts. 35-0 Lions with 0:35 left.
8:36 PM: Ross Rasner extends the Reicher lead with a 2-yard. Nick Castillo’s kick is true. 19-10 Cougars with 2:21 left in the half.
8:36 PM: China Spring is up 35-6 on Whitney at the half. Brian Bell’s got 4 TD passes so far.
8:31 PM: Thanks to Kevin in the comments for telling us Crawford’s leading Hico, 20-6. In other 16-2A action, the News Channel 25 guys also let us know that Troy is up 20-0 on Clifton. Check out their great highlight videos after the game here on WacoTrib.com.
8:26 PM: Touchdown Midway! John Hubert takes it to the house for a huge 75-yard TD run. 20 carries for 150 yards so far tonight. 28-14 Panthers with 3:59 left in the half.
8:25 PM: 16-4A watch: Waxahachie only up 10-0 over Cleburne so far. In the 2nd.
8:24 PM: We’ve got ourselves a ballgame. Ennis scores again after a 10-play, 87-yard drive that ends in a 4-yard TD run by Juavon King. 21-14 Panthers now.
Elsewhere, Mexia is really putting it on this year’s surprise success story, as the Blackcats lead 28-6 over Lorena.
8:21 PM: It might look like an upset on paper as unranked Mart goes up 21-7 on No. 6 Bremond, but it does comport with the savvy picks of the Trib sports taff. Colby Summers hauls in a 48-yard pass from QB Xavier Williams to put the Panthers up by 2 scores. 5:02 left in the half.
Mart (5:02 2nd): Colby Summers 48 pass from Williams (Schaeffer kick)
8:18 PM: I hear turnovers kill: Corsicana fumbles the kickoff and Waco High’s Keyshun Russell recovers at Tigers’ 21. On third play, Kahler takes off on QB draw and there’s nobody there in the secondary., Jason Orts tells us. Kahler’s 22-yard gun, Guevara’s kick makes it 28-0 Lions with 6:43 left in the half.
8:13 PM: Waco High goes up 21-0 on Toylon Clark’s 14-yard TD run, Jason Orts reports: Counter play left, line blew the Corsicana defense off the ball and Toylon Clark just used his speed to beat defense to the end zone. 7:46 2nd.
8:12 PM: Kenneth Cluley tosses an 11-yard TD pass to Nick Castillo, but his kick fails again. 12-10 Reicher. 10:57 2nd.
8:09 PM: Good return for Midway’s Ahmad Dixon to about the Panthers’ 40.
8:08 PM: Mexia 13, Lorena 7 after a quarter. Thanks to stringer John Hillman for calling it in. Elsewhere, China Spring is leading Whitney 21-0 at last check.
8:07 PM: Don’t get too comfortable, Midway. Ennis’ Kyle Guinyard breaks away for a 70-yard TD score. It’s now 21-7 Panthers.
8:06 PM: Mart’s Xavier Williams goes in for a score on a 2-yard run (Matthew Schaeffer kick). Panthers lead Bremond 14-7 with 9:40 left in the half.
8:04 PM: Chad Conine calls it “total domination” for Midway via e-mail. Panthers had the ball at the Ennis 6 at the end of the first quarter, and John Hubert punches it in from there to make it 21-0 early in the 2nd.
7:59 PM: Regents’ Josh Moore gets in on a 3-yard run. Najaar kick good. Reicher trails 10-6 with 2:54 left in the 1st.
7:56 PM: Another turnover for Ennis. Midway’s Brandon Knapp recovers a fumble. Good field position for the Panthers at the 40.
7:55 PM: Midway’s now up 14-0. After doing not much of anything on their series from midfield, the Panthers punt. But Ennis fumbles the catch and Austin McDaniel recovers for Midway at the 9. Three plays later, John Hubert scores on a 2-yard run. 2:25 in the 1st quarter.
7:54 PM: I’d say the fibula is doing OK. Kenneth Cluley’s return to the Reicher backfield looks OK so far as he connects with Jameson Wells for a TD. Nick Castillo’s kick failed. Cougars lead 6-3.
7:52 PM: Bremond’s Lee Diles finds a hole for a 22-yard TD with 1:45 left. Dylon Lindley’s kick makes it 7-7 with Mart.
7:51 PM: Midway forced an Ennis turnover and now has possession at the 50.
7:50 PM: One play, one score for Waco High: Bronshae’Keon Dugas goes 31 yards. 14-0 Lions. Corsicana went three-and-out and had a short punt.
7:46 PM: Midway has taken the fight to No. 8 Ennis. The Panthers forced Ennis to a three-and-out on its game-opening drive, then the Panthers built a 12-play 67-yard march for a score. John Hubert capped the drive with a 1-yard TD dive. Scott Newberry added the extra point. Midway 7, Ennis 0. 5:31 left in the first quarter. — Chad Conine in Ennis
7:45 PM: Austin Regents kicker Salim Hajjar makes a field goal from 36 yards out to go up 3-0 on Reicher early. 7:45 1st.
7:44 PM: Bronshae’Keon Dugas puts Waco High up early with a 2-yard run (Ernesto Guevara kick). Lions 7, Corsicana 0. Jason Orts says:
Lions take advantage of great field position after a three-and-out by the Tigers on first possession, go 47 yards in six plays.
7:35 PM: Brice Cherry reports that Mart’s Anthony Martin just grabbed the ball out of the Bremond RB’s hands and returned the “fumble” for 16 yards. Panthers up 7-0 at 8:11.
Radio games:
- China Spring at Whitney: 1010-AM (KBW)
- Corsicana at Waco High: 1660-AM (KRZI)
- Midway at Ennis: 88.9-FM (KSUR).
More intriguing matchups this evening: Lorena (undefeated in district) goes to Mexia; Hico travels to Crawford for a game with 16-2A playoff implications; plus Robinson will play at La Vega, a game that could be closer than people think, even though La Vega’s worst game this year had the Pirates giving up 22 points (to Abilene Wylie). And also want to mention Austin Regents playing here at J.J. Kearns. Reicher knocked off Regents in the semifinals last year, but the real intrigue here is the return of Kenneth Cluley under center for the Cougars. We’ll see if he can get the defending state champs back on track.
Other games in the spotlight include a 1A matchup of top 10-caliber teams as No. 6 Bremond goes to Mart. We profiled Brmeond QB LiDarral Bailey in our Football Weekender preview section today. That’s definitely a game that could end up either way. Mart was “No. 12” in the state this week, receiving the 2nd-most votes of those outside the top 10.
But don’t discount the rest of the slate. A game that’s more important for playoff implications is being played at Waco ISD Stadium tonight as Corsicana comes to town to play Waco High. The winner of that one will likely grab the last postseason berth in 16-4A after Ennis, Midway and Waxahachie (in some order). And remember that Corsicana challenged Ennis last week and only lost to the Lions by a score.
Jason Orts picked this game as a 42-28 Waco HIgh win, which seems like a lot of points to predict the Lions scoring. But then again, both Bronshae’Keon Dugas and Toylon Clark are back in the lineup and healthy this week.
It’s hard not to think of this as a 1-game night, with Midway’s road game at Ennis dominating much watercooler discussion this week. It’s the old story of the unstoppable force of Deonte McDade and co. vs. the immovable object of a Midway Panthers defense that’s just given up 45 points all year.
And while you may think that’s impressive, that’s not all, as Jason Orts revealed in his incomparable preview column this week. The Panthers have given up zero points — that’s nil, nada, nothing — in the first 3 quarters during district play.
Welcome to The 5th Quarter for week 8!
In addition to our high school ticker and constantly updated scoreboard of area finals, those of us who spend Friday nights collecting info in the Trib newsroom will try to highlight the standout performances, big upsets, surprising stats and any other interesting tidbits that cross our desks.
But that’s only half the story. We’re stuck indoors — but you’re out there, at more than 50 football games every week. So we want you to write!
