The 5TH QUARTER: Oct. 17, 2008
SCOREBARD, etc.
10:47 PM: Gotta give big love to head coach Terry Crawford and Abbott: the Panthers held undefeated Milford to 0 first downs in a 53-8 throttling. “Simply amazing for six man,” the coach said. “The greatest defensive performance in my 10 years as head coach.”
10:33 PM: Waco High wins, Ennis wins, Midway wins, Waxahachie wins, it looks like.
That would theoretically put Waco High in the driver’s seat for the 4th and last playoff spot. The Lions have Corsicana, Midlothian and Midway left. They’d be 5-2 afterward if they won out.
10:32 PM: Stats tell a story…
- Waco High rushing yardage: 418
Cleburne: 70
Waco High total offense: 495
- Cleburne: 216
10:27 PM: The 19-3A standings looking interesting so far. La Vega (6-1) and the Jim Barnes’ “wow” sentiment: Itasca 19, Dawson 13 at the half.
8:44 PM: Ennis 22, Corsicana 7. That one’s at Tiger Stadium up Highway 31.
8:43 PM: Here’s a WacoTrib.com Central Texas Player of the Week possibility: Midway’s John Hubert has 101 yards on 10 carries and 2 TDs so far.
8:41 PM: Brian Bell continues his pinpoint passing as he hits Travis Veselka for a 30-yard scoring pass with 40 seconds remaining before halftime. China Spring leading West 23-0.
8:38 PM: Blackcats are rolling over Robinson, Chad Conine reports: Mexia QB Trae Davis threw a beautiful fade pass to Chase Amick for an 11-yard TD (T.J. Sadler kick). Mexia 28-7, 1:19 left in the first half.
8:35 PM: University gets on the board! Randy Price tosses a 9-yard pass to Vencent Finley. Ricardo Casares’ kick fails, though, and it’s 27-6 Waxahachie with 2:59 left.
8:34 PM: Midway’s Scott Newberry boots a 22-yard FG with about 30 seconds left. Halftime now. Panthers lead Midlothian, 27-0.
8:34 PM: Bad break for Waco High as Cleburne QB Ty Taylor runs through a sack and a line-of-scrimmage tackle on 3rd-and-5 and barely gets a first down. He’s a slippery little fella. About 2 minutes left now, so it looks unlikely for Waco High to pour it on here before halftime.
8:32 PM: Groesbeck scores, but fails to tie it up with less than a minute left in the half. Matt Madison hauls in a TD pass from Holbrook this time. Run failed. 0:40 left.
8:30 PM: Kollin Kahler to Denzel Mitchell? That’s a winning combo for Waco High. Mitchell reaches over the defender to grab the TD pass. Lions 23-7 over Cleburne.
8:29 PM:Arxavier Boyd’s 5-yard run puts Waxahachie up 27-0 on University. 4:25 left.
8:28 PM: Mike Hicks makes an appearance for the state title-contending China Spring Cougars as Brian Bell hits him for a 40-yard TD pass on the middle screen. 16-0 Cougars with 2:21 left. Thanks to John Hillman for bringing us updates from Cougar Stadium.
8:26 PM: Chad Conine reports from Rocket Field: Chris Miles 41 pass from Davis (Mike Gamble conversion run), Mexia 21, Robinson 7, 2:58 left until half.
8:24 PM: Waco High’s offense may be sputtering, but they can still kick it. Lions flip the field with a punt to inside the Cleburne 10 with 6 minutes left until half.
8:23 PM: Robinson answers. The Rockets got their first first down, then went on a 65-yard drive. Dominic Degrate capped it with a 5-yard touchdown run. Mexia 13, Robinson 7. 4:02 left before half. — Chad Conine
8:22 PM: Speaking of the McGregor Bulldogs, they’re having a tough time with Hamilton. They’re trailing, 14-10, and have just fumbled on the Hamilton 5 after driving the length of the field. Touchback. Halftime nears in that one.
8:21 PM: Guess the Pirates didn’t like that whole getting-beat-by-McGregor thing: Crawford’s leading B-Eddy 41-7 in the 2nd, according to commenter Kevin Walters. Thanks, Kevin.
8:19 PM: University’s got to be frustrated at this point as Waxahachie scores again. Arxavier Boyd’s 36-yard run makes it 20-0 Indians. 7:13 ‘til the half.
8:18 PM: Midway’s Scott Newberry shows his skills with a 37-yard field goal. Panthers lead 24-0 over the, uh, other Panthers with 8:10 left until the half.
8:16 PM: Cougars add a safety as West snaps the ball through the end zone on a punt attempt. 9-0 China Spring with 5:48 before the half.
8:16 PM: Unusual score for Itasca after a quarter. Cats are tied 6-6 with Dawson.
8:15 PM: Chase Amick 51 pass from Trae Davis (kick failed). Mexia 13-0, 6:39 left in the second quarter. — Chad Conine
8:14 PM: But Waco High coughs up the ball and Cleburne recovers. Big break for the Jackets.
8:13 PM: 65-yard run? Must be Bronshae’Keon Dugas. Lions are now nearly in the red zone. Big credit to the other Lions on the offensive unit for some bruising blocks downfield.
8:12 PM: After a scoreless first quarter, China Spring cracks the scoreboard. Travis Velselka goes 27 yards up the middle. Cougars 7 - West 0, 7:55 left in second quarter. — John Hillman
8:11 PM: Waxahachie building a lead on University behind Cody Martin’s 1-yard run. PAT fake (Justin Volentine’s run) failed. 13-0 Indians. 11:09 in the half..
8:10 PM: Justin Gant’s 5-yard run gets Cleburne on the board as the secondary can’t hem him in. Waco High still leads, 16-7.
8:09 PM: Cleburne’s receiving corps has shown some life on its most recent possession: a 35ish-yard toss gets the Yellowjackets inside the Waco High 10.
8:07 PM: Thanks to commenter Cody for keeping us up-to-date on 16-4A’s most boring (that’s not a bad thing) non-Midway team: Ennis is up 15-0 on Corsicana in the second. Ennis went for 2 after a 31-yard TD reception. Not sure if Cody’s at the game or what, but thanks!
8:04 PM: Pretty good return gets Cleburne near midfield. But a 15-yard pass is reduced to a 5-yard gain on a deadball foul (illegal block in the back). First quarter runs out with the score Lions 16, Yellowjackets 0.
8:02 PM: Groesbeck pulls to within a score with another Holbrook-to-Lewis strike. The Goats now trail Lorena 21-13 with 1:30 left in the quarter after Simon DeBacker’s kick.
7:59 PM: Bronshae’Keon Dugas gets inside the 5 and an encroachment penalty puts the ball right at the goal line for Waco High. Dugas punches it in for a TD as the Yellowjackets commit a holding penalty on the play. Oy. Declined; touchdown, Waco High. 16-0 good guys.
7:57 PM: Waco High sounds like they’re manhandling Cleburne. Toylon Clark gets a 24-yard run deep into Yellowjacket territory behind good blocking by Bronshae’Keon Dugas. Every WHS drive has started in Cleburne territory so f ar.
7:56 PM: Lorena’s Joe Bennett answers Groesbeck on a 17-yard run. 21-6 Leopards, 3:39.
7:54 PM: The John Hubert show continues. A 50-yard TD run makes it 21-0 over Midlothian. 7:03.
7:53 PM: Waxahachie draws first blood on University at Waco ISD Stadium. Arxavier Boyd’s 1-yard run and James Gish’s PAT makes it 7-0. 5:34 1st quarter.
7:51 PM: Groesbeck gets back in the game on a busted coverage by Lorena with 6:53 in the first. Tyler Lewis’ gets credit for a 66-yard TD pass from Caleb Holbrook. Kick failed and it’s 14-6 Leopards.
7:50 PM: Bronshae’Keon Dugas hits the hole just right on 2nd-and-inches and gets in the end zone for Waco High to make it 9-0 Lions. That’s just a 46-second drive. Cleburne’s punter averages just 29 yards per boot, so it could be a long night for the Yellowjackets.
7:49 PM: Mexia’s Doug Gentry capped a 70-yard drive with a one-yard TD dive. Mexia, 7-0, 3:00 left in 1st. — Chad Conine
7:48 PM: John Hubert makes it 14-0 for the good Panthers as Midway takes a 15-yard run a mere 20 seconds after the last score. 9:13 left in the first.
7:46 PM: After a Groesbeck fumble, Lorena’s Jon Bennett slices through the Goats’ defense on a 26-yard run. That’s the same play Ward scored on. 8:22 in the 1st.
7:45 PM: Ah, the perils of the shotgun — the snap goes over the Cleburne QB’s head, and it’s a safety for Waco High.
7:41 PM: Lorena’s offense is working like a well-oiled machine, going 80 yards on the opening drive. Evan Ward’s 33 run and Josh Sampson’s kick make it 7-0 with 9:20 left in the first. You can click here to read Chad Conine’s report on the Leopards from today’s Football Weekender section. Lorena’s in the thick of the playoff race after averaging a win per season over the last 2 years.
7:40 PM: Midway (5-1, 3-0) gets on the board early in what should be a long night for Midlothian (2-4, 1-2). Todd Glaesmann punches in a 1-yard run and Scott Newberry’s kick makes it 7-0. (9:31 1Q)
7:39 PM: We’ll be updating Waco High at Cleburne most often tonight. Lions force a 3-and-out on their first defensive series after the Yellowjackets win the toss. Despite getting good field position on a bad punt at the Cleburne 43, Waco High can’t get anything going and gives the ball back.
No time for preamble. Let’s get to the games.
On the radio:

do we have score on the Cadets Vs the MODOC Pirates???
WacoTrib.com staff: Sorry La Vega fans, we’re not at that game tonight. We’ll give you a final as soon as it gets called in. Ought to be a pretty easy Modoc win (or at least that’s how our sports guys picked it).

I should be an easy win However the Pirates can not go into any game with the BIG HEAD and think they have already won it without putting points on the board.
