The 5TH QUARTER: Oct. 10, 2008
SCOREBARD, etc.
11:46 PM: Have you checked out our scoreboard page? It’s got all the latest info, from stats to scoring summaries to final scores on all the games we’ve heard about so far. Click here to check it out.
11:02 PM: And 19-3A? Who knows? It really is La Vega and 5 other really good teams.
Mexia scared La Vega (it was 20-20) a bit before the Pirates put ‘em away, 47-20. Groesbeck surprised our experts with a 34-25 win over Robinson. And Lorena and Connally poured points on the board all night before the Leopards finally emerged the victors, 56-35.
Talk about a divison where there is no second division.
10:59 PM: 16-2A is settling a bit. Clifton showed they can score a little with a 35-8 win over Moody; haven’t heard a Hico score yet, but everything else went as expected (McGregor def. Crawford, Troy def. Hamilton):
McGregor, Troy 3-0 Hamilton, Hico 2-1 Crawford, Clifton 1-2 B-Eddy, Moody 0-3
10:57 PM: Ennis wound up at 56-13 and Corsicana won, 33-15.
Here are your updated 16-4A standings:
Ennis, Midway 3-0 Corsicana, Waxahachie 2-1 Waco High, Midlothian 1-2 University, Cleburne 0-3
10:34 PM: La Vega 47, Mexia 20. Final.
10:28 PM: Final: Lorena 56, Connally 35. I’m out of breath just saying it.
10:23 PM: Lorena finally gets 2 scores clear of Connally on Bennett’s 1-yard run. Leopards up 56-35 with 3:41 left.
10:20 PM: A Daxton Swanson INT return gets it done for La Vega in what’ll be a deceiving-looking final score. Pirates 47-20 with under a minute to play.
10:17 PM: We’re hearing Teague hungs on to handle Marlin pretty easily, 55-34. That’s only the Lions’ second win of the year.
10:14 PM: A note on that Kopperl 52, Blum 51 final: the Bobcats missed the kick with 2.8 seconds left to give Kopperl the win. Thanks to the sixmanfootball.com message boards for the details.
10:13 PM: The Stanford band play doesn’t work, and it ends Waxahachie 35, Waco High 28.
10:12 PM: Elsewhere, La Vega’s Julius Guillory scores on a 32-yard run. Gonzales’ PAT is good. 40-20 Modoc over Mexia with 2:19 left.
10:10 PM: And a tipped pass gives Waxahachie a TD! With 12 seconds left, a 35-yard pass was tipped to LaDarius Brown for a TD with 3 seconds left.
A fake PAT is converted for 2. 35-28 Waxahachie.
10:09 PM: Waco High pass rush smothers Wax. on 2nd down from the Lions’ 30, but he slings an incomplete pass. 3rd down.
10:09 PM: Waco High defense is giving the Indians all the time in the world to pass, say the radio guys. Wax. QB has overthrown a couple of receivers and nearly thrown an interception.
10:08 PM: And now Waco High gives them a gift with a late hit for a 15-yard penalty and an auto-first down. 31 seconds left.
10:07 PM: After a 16-second drive for Waco High (that included a Waxahachie timeout), the Indians have given them a gift with an illegal forward pass.
10:06 PM: Midway 31, University 0. Final. That’s 2 of 10!
10:04 PM: A doozy of a score in six-man: Kopperl 52, Blum 51. Abbott blew out Bynum as well, 68-0.
10:01 PM: Finals: McGregor 42, Crawford 14. Itasca 54, Wortham 0. And Tom Barfield says Axtell dodged Italy, 18-13.
10:10 PM: Bosqueville plays the full 4 quarters and nails it down. David Johnson makes a 3-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 36-16 lead with 7:12 left.
9:59 PM: Danzel Wilson has just taken over this game for La Vega. He puts the Pirates up 2 scores on a 6-yard run. Eddy Gonzales has struggled tonight as another PAT fails. 33-20 La Veg. 3:53 left.
9:56 PM: What a break for Waco High! Waxahachie misses the PAT after the Indians’ Cody Martin throws a 67-yard TD pass to Ladarius Brown. 1:49 left. Waco High 28, Waxahachie 27.
9:52 PM: And the Lions take the lead on a huge play! Toylon Clark goes 90 yards on (yet another) draw play: “This time, it was third-and-18. Clark takes ball up the middle and then breaks it to left sideline and just outruns the defense,” says Jason Orts. Ernesto Guevara’s kick makes it 28-21 Waco High with 2:38 left.
9:51 PM: ALCS alert: Carl Crawford breaks up the no-no with a single to lead off the 7th. Matsuzaka struck out 8 and walked 4 over 6 hitless.
9:50 PM: Bosqueville takes a two-touchdown lead as Brandon Due hauls in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Blaze Blackburn. PAT fails. Bulldogs 29, Chilton 16 with 9:25 left.
9:49 PM: Looks like the turnover here may make all the difference: Lorena’s Lor (2:14 3rd): Matt Dowdle scores on a 6-yard pass from Tyler Stewart. Josh Sampson kick makes it 49-35 Leopards over Cadets.
9:48 PM: McGregor won’t let Crawford get too close as Larry Smith’s 1-yard score caps a 65-yard Bulldog drive. 42-14 with 7:03 left.
9:45 PM: John Hubert has 209 yards and 4 TDs after 3 quarters in Hewitt. Panthers lead University, 31-0. No time in recent memory has Midway shut out the Trojans.
9:42 PM: Waco High isn’t going away: Toylon Clark scores on an 8-yard toss sweep. Jason Orts says he “tiptoed into the right corner of the end zone after beating two Waxahichie defenders to the outside.” Kollin Kahler connects with Clark for the 2-point pass and now it’s 21-all with 6 minutes left.
BTW, Ennis leads Cleburne, 56-6.
9:41 PM: Connally charges back as Reggie Richardson leaves Lorena in his dust on a 70-yard TD run. The Cadets trail 42-35 now (3:59 left in 3rd).
9:39 PM: Every dog has its day — today, Bosqueville’s David Johnson breaks the tie with a 17-yard burst up the middle. Bosqueville leads Chilton, 23-16 with 2:30 left in the third.
9:38 PM: Uh oh — Lorena takes advantage of Connally INT. Bad news for the Cadets. Leopards now lead 42-28 after Stewart scores on a 1-yard run. 4:19 in the 3rd.
9:35 PM: Danzel Wilson’s eschewing the running game and taking to the air: a 20-yard pass to Caleb Hobbs puts the Pirates up a score. Eddy Gonzales nails the kick. 27-20 La Vega over Mexia. 3:01 left in the 3rd.
9:33 PM: Crawford’s closing the gap a bit now. QB Chane Lynch hit Jacob Blancett on a 36-yard TD pass. Bulldogs still lead, 35-14, with 2:06 left in the 3rd.
9:32 PM: Whoever scores last may win this one: Lorena QB Tyler Stewart sneaks in for a TD. Leopards up 35-28 over Connally. 6:59 in the 3rd.
9:31 PM: Waxahachie continues to pounds the ball as Venique Brown finds the end zone for a 14-yard scoring run on another QB draw. Indians up 21-13 now with 9:07 left in the game.
9:30 PM: Teague still leads Marlin in the 3rd, now 34-20. And Fairfield is all tied up with Palestine, 26-26.
9:27 PM: Maybe we don’t need to break out the upset alert yet: Danzel Wilson finds Daxton Swanson for a 30-yard TD pass to daxton Swanson. Eddy Gonzales’ PAT fails, though, so the Pirates are tied 20-20. 6:53 left in the third.
9:26 PM: Crawford finally gets on the board on a 40-yard drive following a short punt. Bryce Murphy punched it in for 2 yards. 35-7 Bulldogs.
9:24 PM: Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but John Hubert breaks free for a 66-yard TD run to put the Panthers ahead 31-0. 8:04 left in the 3rd.
9:22 PM: Lorena’s starting its playoff run now as the Leopards square things with Connally, 28-28. This time, QB Tyler Stewart finds Matt Dowdle for a 31-yard TD strike. Sampson’s kick is true with 9:28 left in the 3rd.
9:19 PM: Mexia’s bidding for an upset here as the Blackcats go ahead on La Vega behind Doug Gentry’s 35-yard run. In fact, all 3 scores tonight have been runs for the Cats. The PAT fails to make it 20-14 with 10:06 left in the third.
9:18 PM: I doubt this one will stop being close all night: Waxahachie’s Venique Benton scores on an 11-yard on a QB draw. Indiands lead 14-13 with 3:35 left in the 3rd.
9:10 PM: Toylon Clark gets the Waco High Lions back on top with a 51-yard score on a draw play from third-and-13. Ernesto Guevara kick, and it’s Lions 13, Waxahachie 7. 7:37 in the 3rd.
Score set up by Raymond Moore’s second interception of the night that was caused when Andrew Weaver hit Cody Martin as he threw.
9:08 PM: For you baseball fans out there, Daisuke Matsuzaka is doing something that his teammates wouldn’t appreciate me mentioning in the ALCS.
9:04 PM: In homecoming and sports news, Midway senior Cokie Reed has been selecting homecoming queen. She played post for the Pantherettes’ basketball team that made the regional final this spring.
9:03 PM: Halftime scores from KNES radio in Fairfield:
- Fairfield 18, Palestine 13
- Groesbeck 21, Robinson 13
- Teague 21, Marlin 13
- Itasca 40, Wortham 0
8:50 PM: Corsicana leads Cleburne, 26-0, at halftime.
If we project a little tonight in 16-4A, it’ll be Ennis (up 35-0 at the half) and Midway staying undefeated and Corsciana will move to 2-1; University and Cleburne will move to 0-3 and Midlothian to 1-2; the Waco High-Waxahachie winner will go to 2-1 and the loser will be 1-2.
8:48 PM: New district isn’t fazing China Spring, as the Cougars are shutting out Hillsboro, 35-0, at halftime.
8:46 PM: Thanks to the Corsicana Daily Sun for some scores: Itasca has opened up a 40-0 lead over Wortham, and the fellow 16-4A Lions up Highway 31 are blanking Cleburne, 20-0.
8:44 PM: Jason Orts reports from the Waco High game: A 56-yard touchdown pass from Cody Martin to Ladarius Brown was all Waxahachie needed for a 7-6 lead at halftime over Waco High.
The Lions, who controlled the ball for more than 15 minutes, got field goals of 34 and 27 yards from Ernesto Guevara.
The Indians had a chance to add to their lead on the last play of the first half. Kicker James Gish missed a 32-yard field goal but was roughed, giving Waxahachie another chance with no time left. The Indians put their offense back on the field, and Martin looked for Brown on a quick slant, but Waco High’s Raymond Moore flashed in at the last second, intercepted the pass and returned it 61 yards. Waxahachie running back Arxavier Boyd never quit on the play and got Moore by a leg to pull him down and save a touchdown.
The Indians also lead the Lions by one in total yardage, 136-135. Bronshae’Keon Dugas leads all rushers with 60 yards on 15 carries.
8:42 PM: Well, here comes more scoring: Connally’s Ricky Gates gets 6 points on a 41-yard pass from Torrance Williams. Nick Botello’s kick makes it 28-21 with 24 seconds left before halftime.
8:41 PM: Chilton’s Demeris Randolph blasts through the middle for a 21-yard score and also takes care of the 2-point run to tie things up with Bosqueville. Knotted at 16 with 0:53 left in the half.
8:40 PM: Midway leads University, 24-0, at the break. Worth noting, I guess, that this was the halftime score the last time the Panthers triumphed over the Trojans in 2006.
8:37 PM: Somebody make a tackle, willya? Lorena’s Jon Bennett ties the Leopards with Connally, 21-21, as he finds the end zone on a 10-yard run. 2 minutes ‘til the break.
8:35 PM: It hasn’t been big scoring yet as both the Mexia and La Vega defenses are holding their own. With just over a minute left, the Blackcats’ Lance Bell scores on a 2-yard run to tie things up. It’s 14-14.
For a team like Mexia, which is used to making the playoffs at 3-7 most years, a win over state-ranked La Vega would mean a lot.
8:33 PM: McGregor can’t be stopped, as physics standout Fernando Salas takes a short Larry Smith pass, breaks a tackle and goes 86 yards to the house. Bulldogs now officially wiping the floor with Crawford, 35-0.
8:31 PM: At the half, we hear Cove has retaken the lead over Bryan, 13-10. Also, the Teague Lions are pulling off a mild upset with a 21-13 lead over Marlin at the break.
8:29 PM: Hunter Perry boots a 32-yard field goal for Bosqueville. Bulldogs have doubled up Chilton so far, 16-8, with just under 4 minutes left before the half.
8:28 PM: John Hubert deserves an extra slice of pizza after the game tonight. He gets his third TD of the night on a 2-yard punch-in. Scott Newberry’s kick makes it 24-0 Panthers. 5:05 left.
8:26 PM: In case you hadn’t heard, turnovers kill: Crawford fumbles the snap on a punt, and McGregor’s Cruz Chaires returns the fumble 29 yards for a touchdown. 28-0 Dogs.
8:25 PM: Dallas Morning News has Ennis up 28-0 on Cleburne now. Yeah. Mark that one, Dude. Next game.
8:22 PM: Fairfield radio station KNES tells us Palestine leads Fairfield, 13-12 in the second; and Itasca is blanking Wortham 14-0, also in the second.
8:19 PM: Close games in 13-5A tonight as Bryan takes 10-6 lead over Cove (it was 3-3 for much of the first half); and Consol holds a 4-point edge over Belton, 11-7. Thanks to News Channel 25 for the updates. You can see their highlight videos on WacoTrib.com every Friday night after the games.
8:17 PM: More predictable stuff in 16-4A: Corsicana leads 14-0 over Midlothian after a quarter.
8:15 PM: Larry Smith makes a fake pitch on an option run and gets Crawford to bite as the McGregor QB took it 18 yards the other way for an easy score. Bulldogs lead 21-0.
8:13 PM: John Hubert again, this time for a 4-yard (Newberry kick). Panthers looking good, 17-0, over University with 8:47 left.
8:12 PM: Ernesto Guevara brings Waco High within with 4:48 left in the half. Waxahachie leads 7-6.
8:11 PM: 16-4A watch: Ennis 21, Cleburne 0 in the 1st. Pretty predictable there.
8:11 PM: Mexia’s Trae Davis gets the Blackcats on the board with a 28-yard run. T.J. Sadler’s kick is good. 11:13 left in the second.
8:10 PM: Looks like I spoke too soon — make that 35 points in the first quarter. Reggie Richardson breaks off a huge 75-yard run on the final play of the 1st quarter. Connally leads 21-14 over Lorena.
8:09 PM: It’s now 13-8 Bulldogs over Chilton, 10:13 left in the 2nd: Bosqueville retakes the lead on 50-yard touchdown pass from Blaze Blackburn to Hunter Perry. Pass failed on PAT. — John Hillman
8:06 PM: That’s a total of 28 points in the first quarter as Lorena knots things on a 1-yard Tyler Stewart run. Josh Sampson’s kick makes it 14-14 with 0:16 left in the frame.
8:05 PM: Well, that lead didn’t last long. A one-play drive for Waxahachie as Ladarius Brown grabs a 56-yard pass from Cody Martin. James Gish’s kick makes it 7-3 Indians with 7:45 left.
8:03 PM: Waco High gets on the board, but it’s only 3 points as Ernesto Guevara boots a 34-yard field goal with 7:59 left in the half. The Lions chewed up a ton of clock, 8:04 to be exact, on a 15-play, 63-yard drive.
7:59 PM: Midway calls John Hubert’s number for a 2-yard TD run (kick good). Panthers over Trojans 10-0 as the first quarter ends.
Fun fact: The last time Midway led 10-0 in the first, University came back to stun them, 27-17, in 2004. Of course, the last time Midway led at the end of the 1st quarter (14-0), they buried University, 47-6, in 2006. So ya never know.
7:56 PM: Crawford drives 70 yards to the McGregor 3 and goes for it on fourth down, but the Bulldogs come up with a big stop. Crawford’s Chane Lynch threw to Douglas VanZandt, who was tackled at the 1. Still 14-0 McGregor as they’ll try going 99 yards.
7:51 PM: Can’t hold Chilton down for long, the old saying goes. The Pirates answer quickly as Demeris Randolph blasts through the middle for a 53-yard breakaway TD. Mantraze Landrum runs for 2 and it’s 8-7 over Bosqueville with 5:15 left in the first quarter.
7:50 PM: The track meet has begun: Connally’s Stanley Barnes hauls in a 66-yard pass from Torrance Williams to make it 14-7 Cadets with 9:20 left.
7:49 PM: 49-yard score for La Vega’s Jordan Miller as he finds the end zone again. Pirates lead 14-0 over Mexia with 9:13 to play in the 1st.
7:48 PM: John Hillman reports from Chilton: Bosqueville marches 80 yards on the game’s opening possession. Blaze Blackburn to Cody Feight for 30 yards on the touchdown pass. Bosqueville 7 - Chilton 0 - 6:52 remaining in first quarter.
7:45 PM: Lorena’s Thomas Umberger ties the game on a 14-yard pass from Tyler Stewart. Josh Sampson’s kick makes it 7-7 with Connally. Just over 10 minutes left at Mac Peoples.
7:44 PM: Midway draws first blood in the Battle of Bagby: Scott Newberry’s 28-yard field goal puts the Panthers up 3-0 over University. 7:25 left in the 1st.
7:43 PM: Can anybody stop Larry Smith? Not Crawford, apparently, as the QB goes 56 yards for a score. The McGregor Bulldogs lead, 14-0, with about 8 minutes left in the 1st.
7:41 PM: Another 70-plus run: This time it’s La Vega’s Jordan Miller rolling into the end zone on a 75-yarder. Eddy Gonzales’ kick is good, and the Pirates lead Mexia with 11:39 left.
7:40 PM: More excitement on the first play: Connally’s Jerry Johnson hauls in a 73-yard pass from QB Torrance Williams (Nick Botello kick) to put the Cadets up 7-0 on Lorena with 11:43 remaining in the first.
7:39 PM: McGregor gets on top early as Crawford fumbles on its first offensive play, recovered by Bulldog Andy Solis. Shortly afterward, DeShun Pierson scores on a 7-yard run (kick good). McGregor 7, Crawford 0.
Big rivalry games abound tonight as University will seek to spoil (as it often does) Midway’s season at Panther Stadium; we’ve also got McGregor-Crawford, which has turned into a big McLennan County matchup — dare we say the “Highway 317 Showdown” — in recent years; plus, 19-3A kicks off tonight with a traditional 17-3A matchup in Lorena-Connally and new district faceoffs with Mexia-La Vega and Robinson-Groesbeck.
Jason Orts breaks down all those games and more in his incomparable High School Preview
And if you want to see Jason, Chad Conine and News Channel 25’s Vince Erickson break down more football, click up our weekly videocast as the sports guys reflect on last week and preview tonight’s action.
Welcome to The 5th Quarter for week 6!

I heard Clifton is ahead of Hico 16-6 but can’t confirm.
