The 5TH QUARTER: Oct. 3, 2008

12:12 AM: In the 6-man ranks, things went according to plan as Abbott, Kopperl and Milford all won big. Blum (1-0) was idle this week, leaving Abbott and Milford undefeated, Kopperl 1-1 and the others winless.

12:10 AM: Don’t want to leave out the other district races progressing tonight. In 21-1A, definite separation as Dawson beat Wortham by 30, Axtell beat Frost by 45 and Itasca shut out Hubbard, 37-0.

Itasca and Dawson are undefeated at 2-0, Axtell is 1-1, Wortham is 0-1, and Frost and Hubbard are 0-2. Italy was idle this week.

11:06 PM: Midlothian beat Cleburne, 14-7 in 16-4A play. Gonna be a long year for the Yellow Jackets. Maybe there’s a silver lining there in holding the normally big-scoring Panthers to 14, though.

11:03 PM: Weird score alert: Rockdale 54, Madisonville 2. Heh. Midway also scored a safety tonight vs. Corsicana.

10:59 PM: In other district action, we’ve got Troy’s upset of Crawford and McGregor and Hamilton’s big wins, plus Hico over Moody, and here’s how 16-2A looks:

2-0: McGregor, Troy, Hamilton 1-1: Crawford, Hico 0-2: B-Eddy, Moody, Clifton

10:31 PM: Track meet over: Troy 49, Crawford 28.

10:21 PM: It’s early yet, but here’s how 16-4A figures to look after tonight (assuming Ennis holds on, currently up 35-20 in the 4th):

2-0: Midway and Ennis 1-1: Waco High, Corsicana, Waxahachie, Midlothian/Cleburne 0-2: University, Midlothian/Cleburne

10:11 PM: Troy has just moved the ball at will tonight. Another long Trojan drive ends as Cyrus McKenzie scores from the 3. Troy 29, Crawford 28 with 3:50 left.

10:10 PM: Waco High 31, University 23, final. Was it closer than it should’ve been? Let us know! Comment on this post.

10:05 PM: Midway 43, Corsicana 7, final. Ennis is up 35-20 on Waxahachie in other 16-4A action.

10:02 PM: Lorena 16, Teague 14, final. That’s a hard-fought win for the Leopards.

10:00 PM: Could University make it happen? The Trojans pull within a score at 31-23 as Jordan Richardson grabs a 26-yard TD pass from Price (Casares kick). 2:51 left in the game.

9:59 PM: Reicher 22, Bosqueville 0, final. Tracer McClinton’s 2-yard run and Nick Castillo’s kick late in the fourth accounted for the last score. “Cougars remain a team of mystery,” says sports content editor Jim Barnes.

9:58 PM: It took 93 minutes of football, but Midway has finally surrendered a touchdown in district play. Corsicana’s Cody Evans scores on a one-yard run, bringing the score to 43-7, Midway, with 2:59 to play. — Brice Cherry live in Corsicana

9:54 PM: Itasca 37-0 over Hubbard, final. What’s the over-under on Desmond Guy’s TDs? I’m setting the line at 3.5. Get your votes in now.

9:53 PM: Couple of finals in: McGregor 42-0 over Bruceville-Eddy and Milford, 54-6, over Bynum.

9:47 PM: … and Crawford returns the kickoff. It’s not over yet. Bryce Murphy goes 82 yards. 42-28 with 8:45 left.

9:45 PM: And Troy keeps scoring: Jeremy Conrad takes it to the bank from the 7 to make it 42-21 over Crawford with 9 minutes to play.

9:44 PM: The shutout stays intact for Midway, as Corsicana’s Carlos Cruz misses a 26-yard field goal wide right. It’s still 43-0 with 10-plus minutes left. — Brice

9:41 PM: Much quieter here in the second half. Itasca has put another score on the board to lead Hubbard 30-zip after 3.

9:33 PM: Waco High airs it our: Denzel Mitchell hauls in a 71-yard pass from Kollin Kahler. Ernesto Guevara’s kick makes it 31-16 Lions with 4:18 left in the 3rd.

9:30 PM: Teague’s James Green gets his number called for a score, this one a 3-yard run (kick good). Lions close to within 2 points, 16-14 behind Lorena. 1:18 left in the 3rd.

9:29 PM: Another score from Troy-Crawford John Hillman reports: It’s a track meet. Derrick Vasta bolts for 70-yard touchdown run. Trojans extend lead to 35-21 with 5:37 left in third quarter.

9:28 PM: You have a feeling neither Troy nor Crawford will feel safe with a victory until they’re on the bus. The back-and-forth scoring continues as Crawford’s Dustin Dorris plunges in from a yard away. Trojans now lead just 28-21 with 6:42 left in the 3rd.

9:26 PM: DeMarcus Hicks makes it a 1-score game again for University, behind 24-16, with a 4-yard run (Casares kick) with 5:12 left in the 3rd. Chad Conine reports the score was set up by 30 yard pass from Randy Price to Vencent Finley on fourth-and-seven from the 34.

9:24 PM: Brice reports: Midway has matched last week’s score over Cleburne, as the Panthers now lead Corsicana 43-0 with 6:56 left in the third quarter. That’s thanks to a 43-yard touchdown pass from Corey Holmes to Trey Graham.

9:23 PM: If you’re a 5A fan, you should know that A&M Consol and Bryan are all tied up at 21 in the third quarter. In another close one, Shoemaker is leading Belton, 23-22 in the 3rd.

9:22 PM: Lorena knows it needs every point it can get vs. a tough Teague attack: The Leopards’ Jon Bennett makes it a 2-score game on a 5-yard run. 3:55 left in the 3rd and they’re up 16-7.

9:21 PM: The Lions, too, keep on scoring as Waco High’s Keyshun Russell threads his way into the end zone on a 14-yard run (Guevara kick). The High is up 24-9 with about 10 left in the 3rd.

9:20 PM: Troy Trojans picking up where they left off, this time wit a 5-play, 75-yard drive to open the half. Roy Freeman scores from 17 yards out. Troy 28-14 with 10:22 left in the 3rd.

9:14 PM: It takes Midway all of three plays to score in the second half, with John Hubert providing the honors on a 31-yard run. The Panthers lead 36-0 here on Corsciana’s homecoming night. — from Brice Cherry in Corsicana. Second half, same as the first. Hubert’s Hermits?

8:56 PM: Putting up big scores in 1A: It’s Axtell 35-8 over Frost and Dawson leading Wortham 36-6 at halftime.

8:46 PM: Cove 35, Temple 7 in the 2nd. Ouch, Wildcats. Thanks to News Channel 25 for the info. You can watch their videos on our Web site as soon as the film is in tonight. Keep checking the video page or our high school page for the latest.

8:41 PM: Notable: Bosqueville had scores 182 points in four games coming into tonight, but the Dogs are getting shut out, 15-0, by a Reicher team that’s lost 2 of its 3 games by 40-ish.

8:39 PM: Halftime in 16-4A: Waco High 17, University 9. Midway 29, Corsicana 0. In the first quarter, it’s Ennis 14, Waxahachie 6.

8:35 PM: That’s a little more like it: Itasca leads 21-0 at the half over the Jaggers of Hubbard. You can’t always get what you want.

8:34 PM: McGregor’s putting it on ‘em as Peyton Fisk hauls in a 40-yard pass from Larry Smith. Bulldogs lead B-Eddy, 35-0, with a minute left in the half.

8:31 PM: A 10-play drive puts Troy back in the lead as Trey Collier goes over from 4 yards out. Trojans 21, Crawford 14. Two and a half left.

8:31 PM: Reicher goes up 15-0 as Ross Rasner does double duty, first on a 4-yard run, then a 2-point run. 2:06 until the half as the Cougars lead Bosqueville.

8:30 PM: Dugas does it again for Waco High, this time on a 25-yard run. Trojans will want to prevent another score before the half; it’s 17-0 Lions with 3 minutes left.

8:30 PM: Lorena’s Josh Sampson puts the Leopards in front with a 20-yard boot to make it 9-7 over Teague. 1:26 left in the half.

8:28 PM: Offense, schmoffense: Midway’s defense has put together another humdinger here in its second district game. Defensive end Terrence Hollomon sacks Corsicana’s Cameron Young in the end zone for a safety, making the score 29-0 in favor of the mighty Panthers with 2:37 left in the half. — Brice Cherry

8:24 PM: Crawford’s getting in the groove: Bryce Murphy breaks off a 68-yard touchdown run to tie it at 14 with Troy; 7:18 left.

8:21 PM: Reicher takes a 7-0 lead in a game that’s been fast-moving and low-scoring: Jameson Wells hauls in a 59-yard pass from Nick Castillo. Castillo’s kick makes it 7-0 with 4:23 left in the half.

8:20 PM: Derrick Vasta? Runs fasta, scoring a 43-yard TD for Troy to put the Trojans in front 14-7. 7:36 left in the half.

8:19 PM: McGregor goes up 28-0 on Bruceville-Eddy with six and a half left. Larry Smith tosses a 25-yard pass to Cruz Chaires.

8:18 PM: Waco High takes the lead as Ernesto Guevara, one of many Centex kickers who get it done, plants a 33-yard field goal through the uprights. Lions lead 10-9 with 6:20 left in the 2nd.

8:17 PM: It’s all going right for Midway. After their last touchdown, the Panthers’ Newberry uncorks a squib kick that bounces off the front line of Corsicana blockers, and right back to the Panthers for a crazy onside kick. Six plays later, Todd Glaesmann scores on a 18-yard option keeper. It’s 27-0 Midway with 9:07 left in the half. — B.C. in N.C.

8:14 PM: Teague takes a lead: Jacob Smith hauls in an 18-yard pass from Deuntrae Mims (kick good), and they’re up 7-6 over Lorena 8:34 left in the 2nd. That’s good news for a Lions team that usually grinds it out to score points.

8:10 PM: And Waco High gets on the board: Bronshae’Keon Dugas dashes for a 67-yard TD run (Ernesto Guevara kick) to cut it to 9-7 Trojans with 11:07 left in the 2nd.

8:09 PM: Unnecessary week-2-of-district scoreboard watching: Ennis-Waxahachie is 0-0 so far in the 1st.

8:05 PM: I think the Panthers can smell playoffs: It’s quickly turning into a Midway rout here in Corsicana. John Hubert wiggles up the middle for an 11-yard touchdown run, dragging a would-be Corsicana tackler for the final yard. It’s 20-0 Midway with 11:23 left in the first half. — Brice Cherry

8:03 PM: Well, Jason Orts said it wasn’t a slam dunk for the first time in a long time, and it looks like he was right: University 9, Waco High 0 as Ricardo Casares connects on a 35-yard field goal with 0:37 left in the first.

8:02 PM: Julian Young of McGregor is putting some distance between the Bulldogs and the Eagles as he streaks into the end zone on a 65-yard TD run. Interesting note: On the previous play, Larry Smith took it to the house on a 75-yard run, but it was called back on a penalty. Guess it’ll be a long night for Bruceville-Eddy. 21-0 Bulldogs with 2 minutes left in the 1st.

8:01 PM: Crawford’s offense doesn’t take long to strike back. QB Chane Lynch connects with Bryce Murphy for a 55-yard touchdown pass to make it knotted at 7 with 3:13 left in the first quarter.

7:58 PM: Not sure if it qualifies as surprising, but Itasca is “only” ahead 7-0 after a quarter vs. Hubbard. (Three guesses as to who scored.) Our sports guys all picked the Wampus Cats to cover at least 33.5 points. As always, a shout out to the Corsicana Daily Sun for their live Friday-night updates.

7:57 PM: McGregor update: Larry Smith’s 10-yard TD run and DeShun Pierson’s 40-yard scamper have the Bulldogs up 14-0 on Bruceville-Eddy late in the first quarter. Hat tip to my dad for calling it in.

7:55 PM: Is this why they’re called “special” teams? Troy’s Jeremy Conrad does something special — he returns a punt 79 yards for a touchdown to give the Trojans a 7-0 lead over Crawford midway through the first quarter.

7:52 PM: Midway’s defense matches the offensive unit with a touchdown of its own, as Vyonte Guess picks off a pass from Corsicana’s Cameron Young and scoots 40 yards to paydirt. This time, Midway gets a good snap and hold, ans Scott Newberry nails the kick to push the Panther lead to 13-0. — Brice Cherry

7:45 PM: Brice Cherry reports from Navarro County: The Midway Panthers have to be glad to have Todd Glaesmann back on their team, as he forms a pretty nice platoon at quarterback with Corey Holmes. After Holmes is under center for Midway’s first five plays, Glaesmann takes over on their next two, running 33 yards and then closing it out with a 1-yard TD run. Midway botches the snap on the PAT try, and it’s 6-0 Panthers with 7:02 left in the opening quarter.

7:43 PM: It’s University 6, Waco High 0 … repeating, University 6, Waco High 0: DeMarcus Hicks finds the end zone on an 8-yard run (kick failed) as the Trojans take the early lead. 9:10 left in the first quarter.

7:41 PM: Lorena’s out to an early lead as Tyler Stewart punches in 1-yard run (2-point try failed), and it’s 6-0 with 10:50 left in the first. We’ll see how the Leopards’ defense can do against Teague after giving up 92 points in the past two weeks.

Just in case you’re wondering, we’re staffing 5 games tonight:

  • Chad Conine’s got the big battle at Waco ISD Stadium
  • Brice Cherry will hoof it to the friendly confines of Corsicana’s (new) Tiger Stadium to see how Midway fares
  • Jason Orts heads down I-35 to see how Lorena handles Teague
  • Stringer Brian Bateman will check out Reicher vs. Bosqueville
  • and stringer John Hillman checks out the 16-2A matchup in Troy as the Crawford Pirates come to town.

You can catch the Waco High-University game on the radio on 1660-AM (KRZI) and the Midway game’s on 88.9-FM (KSUR).

It’s a bit of a light slate this week as several districts are gearing up for next week’s opener, but there are still plenty of salivating matchups, as Jason Orts revealed in his incomparable preview column.

What will we all be talking about in 5 hours? Will it be the clash of 16-2A undefeateds in Troy and Crawford, or the big crosstown rivalry as Waco High and University, both 0-1 in district, square off needing to get back on track? Or could this year’s Robinson team make it three wins in a row and upset perennial power Giddings?

For my money, the most interesting game of the week is Bosqueville vs. Reicher. Jason had it right — “Will the real Reicher Cougars please stand up?” — because while the Cougars may not be destined for the state title again, they’re not as bad as they looked in a 41-0 pasting by Mart last week. Throw in undefeated 1A Bosqueville’s potent offense coming into J.J. Kearns, and you’ve got one intriguing matchup.

Welcome to The 5th Quarter for week 5!

In addition to our high school ticker and constantly updated scoreboard of area finals, those of us who spend Friday nights collecting info in the Trib newsroom will try to highlight the standout performances, big upsets, surprising stats and any other interesting tidbits that cross our desks.

But that’s only half the story. We’re stuck indoors — but you’re out there, at more than 50 football games every week. So we want you to write! Comment on the post with anything from on or off the field that’s weird, unusual, spectacular, hilarious or downright interesting, so that all the Centex high school football fans can get the full scoop on what’s going on.
