The 5TH QUARTER: Sept. 26, 2008

11:52 PM: In 16-4A, we’ve got Ennis, Corsicana, Midway and Waxahachie as winners tonight. Wouldn’t expect that to hold, as Waco High will certainly be in the playoff mix — and don’t count out University, who made a real game of it tonight in keeping up with always-solid Corsciana.

11:31 PM: Other than Reicher getting handled handily by Mart, haven’t seen too many upsets so far tonight. La Vega did hold on to win, 21-12, over Crockett, though our experts picked it with a little more breathing room for the Pirates.

The Milf, Blum and Abbott are all 1-0 in Dist. 13 Div. I of 6-man, and you’d expect those 3 to make the playoffs.

No. 3 Itasca rolled, as did Dawson and Hubbard in 21-1A. Axtell shouldn’t have too much to worry about, though, as they only lost 38-12 to the third-ranked Wampus Cats (whose Desmond Guy presumably had another big night, I’d guess).

11:18 PM: Exciting times around around 12-5A tonight, as Bryan goes to overtime to beat Shoemaker, 42-41; Temple beat Consol by a field goal, 24-21; and Cove 45s Ellison. Harker Heights handled Belton, 30-19, last night.

10:53 PM: It’s always a good game: Bremond 31, Chilton 30 in the premier 1A matchup tonight.

10:38 PM: We’ve just heard that Mart came out and just stomped Reicher tonight: 41-0 was that final.

10:37 PM: University couldn’t quite pull it out: ends up Corsicana 34, University 31. I bet that’ll be a great game story to read in Saturday’s Tribune-Herald.

10:11 PM: No boring second half at Waco ISD — University’s Randy Price lofts a 75-yard pass to Jordan Richardson to pull the Trojans within 3: 34-31. Jason Orts: It went right through defender’s hands and to Richardson, who took it the distance (third-and-10 play).

10:10 PM: Midway 43-0. Final. Ennis beats Waco High, 48-14. Final.

10:09 PM: Don’t like to see Crockett hanging around: Anthony Harris throws a 33-yard scoring pass to Napoleon Harris. Roman Sanchez kick failed. La Vega still leads 21-12 with 6:13 left.

10:02 PM: Connally recovers an onside kick, then strikes quickly to put this one pretty much out of reach, 35-23. Jerry Johnson’s 39-yard TD pass from Reggie Richardson ices it with 2:16 to play.

10:01 PM: Ennis puts another on the board, as Jyavon King dances in on a seven-yard TD run. For some reason, Ennis attempts to pass for two points and fails. Guess Sam Harrell’s team wanted to try to put up 50 on Johnny Tusa. It’s 48-14 with 2:48 left to play. — Brice Cherry in Ennis

10:00 PM: China Spring wins, 41-14 final. Despite passing better in the second half, all of the Cougars’ TDs came on the ground.

9:58 PM: Don’t count the Hornets out yet — Gatesville cuts the deficit to 3 as C.L. Riddle scores on a 5-yard catch from pass from Shane Clark. The 2-point pass fails to make it 28-23 Cadets with 3:11 to play.

9:49 PM: Danzel Wilson gets Stefan Adams involved in the scoring on a 7-yard Pirates TD strike. Eddy Gonzales is true again to make it 21-6 La Vega with 0:51 left in the third.

9:48 PM: A few updates: Dawson knocks off Hubbard, 46-12, second win of the year for the Bulldogs … Corsicana 34, University 24 at the end of the 3rd … Waxahachie leads Midlothian 21-17 in the 4th … China Spring gets another score, third of the night by Jeremy Lloyd, they’re up 41-6 as they’ve looked better in the second half, scoring 28 straight.

9:47 PM: Crawford continues to score as Bryce Murphy breaks off 73-yard scoring run for the Pirates — they lead 34-3 (kick failed) with 7:21 remaining.

9:45 PM: Sure, we knew Kollin Kahler had talent — but did you know he could scramble? Brice Cherry: Waco High shows some signs of life, as quarterback Kollin Kahler breaks free on a 67-yard touchdown run on an option keeper. The score is now Ennis 42, Waco High 14, with 8:54 on the game clock.

9:43 PM: Midway’s Scott Newberry boots a 46-yard field goal, the Panthers are now up 43-0 with 10:15 to play.

9:42 PM: Mind the gap: Ennis pushes the gap to 42-7 in its rout of Waco High, as Tim Hearne dives in from a yard out. Hearne has 74 yards and two touchdowns on just five carries, as Ennis has thoroughly dominated on both the ground and through the air. There’s 9:18 still to play, with Waco High merely playing for pride at this point. — Brice Cherry

9:41 PM: Gatesville’s Garrett Johnson brings the Hornets back within 2 scores on a 4-yard TD catch from Shane Clark (Worley kick). Connally is up 28-17 with 9:04 left in 4th.

9:41 PM: It’s possible — just possible — that Midway’s taking it easy on Cleburne tonight in the second half. It’s still 40-0 Panthers after 3 quarters.

9:40 PM: Doesn’t Corsicana know there are rules about scoring? Hmph. This one’s a defensive score as the Tigers’ Arsenio Cole returns a blocked punt 20 yards to put the Tigers up 34-24 with 3:53 left in the 3rd.

9:35 PM: It’s been a quiet 3rd quarter in Ennis. No scoring makes it still 35-6 Lions. (Not the good guy Lions.)

9:34 PM: Whoever scores last is gonna win this one at Waco ISD. Corsicana’s Ostin Anderson gets into the end zone on a 37-yard pass from Cameron Young (Carlos Cruz kick). Tigers lead University 27-24.

9:33 PM: China Spring’s Boston Blake punches it in from 2 yards out to turn this one into a rout. 34-6 Cougars over Marlin at the end of the 3rd.

9:30 PM: Quick knockout punches for Abbott, 50-0 over Kopperl, and Blum, which downed Covington 73-0. Thanks to sixmanfootball.com for the scores.

9:28 PM: Got an update for Modoc Nation: La Vega QB Danzel Wilson scores on a 1-yard run. Eddy Gonzales’ PAT is good, so it’s 14-6 Pirates with 7:50 left in the 3rd quarter.

9:26 PM: Crawford is taking control as Bryce Murphy scores on a 13-yard run. Pirates 28, Clifton Cubs 3 with 5:03 left in the third quarter.

9:25 PM: Todd Glaesmann grabs another TD pass, 26 yards from Corey Holmes (Newberry kick). Midway leads 40-0 with 6:26 left in the 3rd.

9:24 PM: “That didn’t last long,” Jason Orts says — Randy Price strikes back for the Trojans, invading the end zone on a 30-yard TD run. The run fails, and University now leads 24-20 with 9:07 left in the 3rd. That was 2 plays, 51 yards, 17 seconds on the drive.

9:23 PM: Mike Hicks got a short-yardage TD to give China Spring more of a lead now, 2:33 left in the 3rd and the Cougars lead 27-6. Marlin has 2 turnovers this quarter.

9:22 PM: University and Corsicana just keep trading scores. This time, it’s the Tigers’ Andey Means grabbing a 50-yard pass from Cameron Young (kick failed). Means was wide open over the middle and raced in from the 30-yard line after the catch. Tigers lead Trojans, 20-18.

9:21 PM: Trib correspondent Brian Bateman reports: Connally recovered a Gatesville fumble on the kickoff, then the Cadets struck quickly on a 31-yard throwback pass from D’Andre Simmons to quarterback Torrance Williams. 28-10 Connally, 5:47 left in 3rd

9:15 PM: How’s this for the big-yardage play of the night? Connally’s Craig Madkins hauls in an 81-yard pass from Torrance Williams and the Cadets lead Gatesville 21-10 halfway through the 3rd. Give credit to the Connally defense for limiting the Hornets and giving its offense a chance to put some points on the board.

9:14 PM: If you haven’t been checking our ticker, Dawson is handling Hubbard, 39-6 in 1A action; Mexia was shutting out West 14-0 in the 1st; Fairfield was ahead 7-0 in the 1st; and TCA continues to struggle, down 40-0 to Richardson Canyon Creek in the third.

9:10 PM: Chane Lynch connects with to Kody Johnston again, this time on a 20-yard TD pass, to put Crawford up 21-3 with 10:30 left in third quarter.

9:03 PM: Well, it’s only took 2 plays for China Spring to get back on the board after a Marlin fumble in its own territory. Jeremy Lloyd took it 20 yards to the house for a quick 6. Cougars lead 20-6 early in the 3rd.

8:50 PM: Jason Orts gives us a halftime snapshot from Waco ISD Stadium: Quarterback Randy Price threw for 79 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 103 yards on only seven carries to help University to an 18-14 lead over Corsicana at halftime.

Vencent Finley caught both of Price’s TD passes with leaping catches in the end zone, and Demarcus Hicks has added 77 yards and a score on the ground in the back-and-forth encounter.

The Trojan defense has struggled stopping the run, as the Tigers have 140 yards on 23 carries.

16-4A fans might also like to know Waxahachie-Midlothian is tied at 14 at the break.

8:45 PM: Vencent Finley another nice catch…this time on fade route on right side, leaping catch over Corsicana’s Robert Adkinson. — Jason Orts at Waco ISD Stadium. University leads 18-14.

8:44 PM: Crawford made it 14-3 on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Chane Lynch to Kody Johnston with 2:14 left in second quarter. It’s at the half now.

8:33 PM: Corsicana’s Cody Evans puts the Tigers up by 2 on a 4-yard run with just over a minute left in the half. Jason Orts reports: Evans was hit at 2-yard line and keeps moving his feet until he backs into the end zone. 7-play, 53-yard drive, all on the ground. 14-12 Tigers.

8:32 PM: Connally’s persistence pays off as the Cadets retake the lead right before the half on an Isaiah Thompson 2-yard run. Connally leads Gatesville 14-10.

8:30 PM: China Spring didn’t score in the second quarter (wonder when’s the last time that happened?) and they go into the locker room up 13-6 at the half.

It’ll be a long halftime as it’s homecoming night in China Spring, as at many schools around the area. We’ll remind you that WacoTrib.com will have tons of photos from the local homecoming in three sprawling slide shows after the games — and that’s not even including all the action photos we’ll have in a fourth show. You can find it all on our photos page, along with Centex cheerleaders.

Marlin will get the ball to start the second half.

8:29 PM: Should mention that Ryan Boutwell has had his name called many many times on defense for the Cougs. Just had a nice tackle on first down to stop a speedy Marlin back. Radio guys rightly noting it’s been a clean game with few, if any, penalties and no turnovers for the Cougars.

8:28 PM: The China Spring offense hasn’t had a ton of luck moving the ball tonight — exemplified by Mike Hicks dropping one that hit him right in the breadbasket on fourth down with less than a minute left in the half.

8:26 PM: Attention Midway fans: Go find something else to do. No surprises coming here. Todd Glaesmann catches a 29-yard TD pass from Corey Holmes (Newberry kick) to make it 33-0, 6:41 left in 2nd.

8:25 PM: University is really hanging with Corsicana tonight. Jason Orts says Vencent Finley was “wide open, pass underthrown, but Finley makes great adjustment and leaping catch at the goal line for the TD.” That’s a Randy Price 25-yard pass (DeMarcus Hicks’ run failed) to make it 12-7.

8:24 PM: It’s turning into a rout here in Ennis. D.J. Betik found Tim Hearne wide open over the middle for a 54-yard touchdown pass that pushed the Ennis lead to 28-7 with 7:35 to play in the first half. Then on the ensuing kickoff, Waco High fumbled and Ennis recovered to give the home team a chance to add to their lead. — Brice “Rocketman” Cherry

8:22 PM: Dustin Dorris puts the Pirates on the boat with a 2-yard score in a low-scoring one (so far) out in Crawford. They lead 7-3 over Clifton in the 2nd.

8:21 PM: 16-4A fans take note: Midlothian 7, Waxahachie 0 in the 1st. We picked the Indians third in the district in our preview section, and they’re still a solid third-spot contender according to today’s district preview from our Football Weekender section. You can pick that up on newsstands every Friday.

8:20 PM: Auspicious start for Owens as the Bulldogs take a delay-of-game penalty.

8:20 PM: The Marlin Bulldogs have a new QB, and he’s a freshman — Ronnie Owens is in the game. Radio guys say he’s not as big at Hitchens.

8:19 PM: Brian Bell, although perfect on the night, is having a quiet night for China Spring as he’s just 3-of-3. Cougars have their first 3-and-out of the night as the Bulldogs get the ball back with about 4 minutes left in the half.

8:16 PM: John Hubert again — this time for 10 yards. Panthers lead Cleburne 26-0 with 9:02 left.

8:15 PM: Gatesville is looking for make it 4 wins in a row as Cody Sheets puts the Hornets ahead on a 4-yard run. They lead 10-7 over Connally as the second quarter winds down.

8:12 PM: As he was getting sacked, QB Charles Hitchens fired a bullet to senior tight end Terrence Goode to bring Marlin to 13-6 behind China Spring. He may have been hurt on the play; we’ll keep you updated. A bobbled snap keeps the score with a 7-point deficit.

8:09 PM: John Hubert does it again with a 31-yard run. Scott Newberry’s kick makes it 19-0 Midway with 10:06 left in the half.

8:08 PM: Brice Cherry from the pressbox in Ennis: The explosive Ennis Lions — they averaged 49 points per game in their three nondistrict wins — are keeping it up against the normally-stiff defense of the Waco High Lions. Ennis now leads 21-7 with 10:36 left in the opening half after D.J. Betik connects with Deonte McDade on a 20-yard TD pass over the middle.

8:07 PM: The Cougars really bit on a playaction pass and Marlin showed they can pass a little, too, on a 24-yard gain down to around the China Spring 20.

8:06 PM: Mike Hicks laid a hard hit and jarred the ball loose from a Marlin receiver, but the Bulldogs fall on the ball (and if you can imagine it, Mark Bell doesn’t agree, say the radio guys). Marlin trying to make something happen in the 2nd quarter down 13-0.

8:05 PM: Corsicana seems determined to play nothing but close games: Cameron Young gives the Tigers a 1-yard lead on a 15-yard TD run. They lead University 7-6 with 1:42 left in the first.

8:04 PM: Gatesville’s Hunter Worley puts the Hornets on the board with a 32-yard field goal. Early in the second there.

8:01 PM: Midway’s scoring but not converting, as Todd Glaesmann’s 2-yard run and a failed conversion run make it 12-0 at the end of the 1st.

7:59 PM: Waco High gets on the board, Brice says: Fueled by a 64-yard kickoff return from Lamarquet Jones to the Ennis 19, Waco High has trimmed the Ennis lead to 14-7. Johnny Tusa’s Lions get the touchdown on a one-yard dive from fullback Bronshae’Keon Dugas. It’s 14-7 Ennis with 21 seconds left in the opening quarter.

7:55 PM: Marlin has only had the ball for about 4 minutes this half as Mike Hicks gets into the action, spinning into the end zone for a score. Kick is no good, though, so the Cougs lead 13-0 near the end of the quarter.

7:54 PM: And University gets its first 16-4A points with a DeMarcus Hicks 2-yard plunge for a score. Trojans lead 6-0 with 6:21 left in the first. Just waiting for Waco High to score, and our Centex 4As will all be on the scoreboard.

7:53 PM: Ennis strikes again, taking a two-touchdown first-quarter lead on a 13-yard TD scamper from running back Tim Hearne. It’s 14-0 Ennis over Waco High with 3:08 remaining in the first. — Brice Cherry

7:52 PM: Chad Ward’s the La Vega running back putting the first points on the board tonight with a 37-yard TD run. Eddy Gonzales’ kick makes it 7-6 Pirates.

7:49 PM: Clifton strikes first — will they be playoff-bound in 16-2A? — strikes first with a 25-yard field goal from Miguel Hernandez. Cubs 3, Pirates 0, 6:13 left in the 1st.

7:48 PM: Who else would you expect to begin the Midway Panthers’ playoff push? John Hubert slices through the Cleburne defense for a 43-yard TD run with 6:13 left in the first. That’s a Yellow Jacket team that shut out FW Western Hills, 56-0, last week. But the kick fails (whither Justin Shaughnessy?) and the Panthers lead 6-0 with 6:13 left in the 1st.

7:44 PM: La Vega is down early vs. Crockett as the Bulldogs get on the board with an Anthony Harris 14-yard pass to NaQuan Lee. 2 point conversion failed. A little surprising, and not good news for the Pirates — Crockett has a stingy D.

7:42 PM: Brice Cherry reports live from the Metroplex: Ennis wasted no time putting the first points on the board, as quarterback D.J. Betik found receiver Charles Cox on an 18-yard scoring strike to give his team a 7-0 edge with 8:58 to play in the opening quarter. That capped a nine-play, 77-yard drive for Ennis.

7:38 PM: Jerry Johnson gets the Connally Cadets on the board quickly as he steps into the end zone with a 2-yard pass from Wade Smith. Nick Botello’s kick makes it 7-0 with 8:25 left in the first frame.

7:37 PM: China Spring doesn’t look like it’s taking Marlin lightly after the Bulldogs knocked off state-ranked Mart last week. Jerome Lloyd stayed upright on a rumbling 16-yard score to put the Cougars up a quick 7-0 with around 8 minutes left in the first.

We’ll be listening to China Spring on the radio tonight and getting updates in periodically from our writers the Waco High, University, Midway, Clifton-Crawford Gatesville-Connally and Crockett-La Vega games.

You can listen to Marlin-China Spring tonight on 1010-AM (KBW) or Waco High-Ennis on 1660-AM (KRZI). Midway should also be available on 88.9-FM.

The 5TH QUARTER: Sept. 19, 2008

11:11 PM: Around the state, Liberty Hill 56, Brownwood 49. Brownwood’s Casey Pachall passes for 482 yards. Whoa.

10:59 PM: In the eye-popping stat department, let’s introduce you to Itasca’s Desmond Guy. This guy has 51 carries for about 930 yards on the season with 15 TDs. That’s something ungodly like 18 yards per carry. No wonder that guy won our first two player of the week votes on WacoTrib.com. And no wonder Itasca stayed undefeated tonight with a 50-26 win over Meridian. In fact, the Wampus Cats have only failed to score 50 points once so far this year in 4 games.

10:56 PM: I don’t know any specifics, but the Dallas Morning News scoreboard now has Belton down 34-33 to Timberview. They were down 28-27 last I checked, and trailed by a TD or two most of the game.

10:30 PM: China Spring ends up 37-18 after a bit of a scare there. Brian Bell threw 3 TD passes and Zach Davis scored 3 times as well.

10:29 PM: Cameron’s James Wells punches in the ball on a 14-yard carry for the final score of the game. Final: Yoemen 60, Lorena 35.

10:25 PM: Robinson knows it can’t rest on its heels against Salado. Domonic DeGrate scores on a 15-yard run to extend the Rockets’ lead to 32-20. run. Wagner kick good. 2:45 left. Very good win for Robinson’s first victory of 2008.

10:24 PM: In the big-school ranks, Belton has stormed back in the second half to trail 28-27 to Mansfield Timberview late in the 4th. Temple lost to Plano, 49-29.

10:22 PM: Caleb Holbrook scores Groesbeck’s first points of the second half to make it 37-18 Cougars. Hats off to the China Spring defense for getting the job done after the break.

10:19 PM: After closing the gap to 2 points, we hear La Vega has gone final: Abilene Wylie 22, Pirates 20. Not certain on that, though.

10:17 PM: Nobody’s running away with this one in Salado-Robinson. Ruben Martinez throws a 10-yard TD pass to make it 25-13, then Salado’s Tyler Wright finds lots of open space on a 42-yard run just a minute or so later. Rockets lead 25-20 with half a quarter to play.

10:15 PM: With just 4 and a half left, I’m afraid half a hunny might be too much for Lorena. Cameron’s Freeman scores on a 6-yard pass and the Yoeman are up 54-35.

10:13 PM: Jerome Lloyd gets wide-open for Brian Bell’s third TD pass of the game on a 60-yard score. China Spring going for 2 up 35-12 (kicker James French is injured). Zach Davis gets the 2, so it’s 37-12.

10:12 PM: A few final trickling in. Bosqueville 36-28 over Axtell; Rogers 24-14 over Troy is a final. Check more finals and in-progress scores on our high school sports page at wacotrib.com/hs.

10:05 PM: Another Evan Ward score as Lorena’s not done scoring yet: Justin Stewart finds him for his third score of the game, a 4-yard pass, and the Leopards are within 2 scores down 47-35.

10:03 PM: China Spring is getting some breathing room thanks to (yet another) turnover. Zach Davis takes an INT of Caleb Holbrook, who was under pressure to the house to make it 27-12. China Spring’s first conversion attempt is called back by a penalty, but Reece Meador is wide open for the second attempt. 29-12 Coogs in the 4th. Mike Hicks and Ryan Boutwell also have interceptions on the night, BTW.

9:59 PM: Blaze Blackburn blazes a trail to the end zone on a TD run. Bulldogs now up 36-28 on Axtell with 3:02 left.

9:58 PM: Appreciate the scoring updates in the comments. Abilene Wylie is up 22-14 late in the 3rd, according to our readers. We encourage anyone with a score, an opinion, or anything else to let us know in the comments

9:52 PM: And a top-10 team gets knocked off: Marlin stops Xavier Williams after a 2-yard gain on a 4th-and-10 play, and the Bulldogs take over and run out the clock. Final score: Marlin 21, Mart 16. Justin Stewart finished with 182 yards and 2 TDs for Marlin. Brice Cherry reporting. You can read the full story in Saturday’s Tribune-Herald. Pick it up.

9:51 PM: Robinson’s scratching to put points on the board any way it can. Michael Wagner kicks a 26-yard field goal and then the Rockets’ D gets a safety to make it 18-13 early in the 4th.

9:50 PM: Doesn’t look like Lorena’ll be able to catch up in this track meet, though they’ve certainly scored with ease. Cameron’s Justin Sapp scores on a 13-yard pass from Townsend to make it 47-28 after 3.

9:47 PM: Another momentum-changing play as Ryan Boutwell pulls down an interception for China Spring. Cougars are now moving the ball into Goat territory. But the Cougars give it right back, as Grosebeck intercepts another pass.

9:45 PM: Now Bosqueville may be in trouble. Jay Hellek gets a 15-yard scoring pass from Weston Popham (run failed), and it’s 29-28 Dogs with 7:49 to play after the run fails. The Longhorns have gone for 2 on three of their four scores tonight.

9:40 PM: Lorena’s Evan Ward gets his second big-yardage score of the game, this one a 48-yard run. Leopards are still in this one, down 40-28 with a quarter and a half to play.

9:39 PM: Brice Cherry: Mart strikes back, as Xavier Williams darts through the Bulldog defense for a 32-yard scoring run. The Panthers’ pass for two fails, and it’s now 21-16, Marlin leading, with 5:55 to play.

9:37 PM: Here are a bunch of updates:

Mart-Marlin

We may be seeing the emergence of a new star running back here in Marlin. Bulldogs freshman Justin Stewart busts free on a 76-yard TD run to give Marlin a 21-10 lead with 7:58 to play. Stewart showed a nice blend of power and speed on the run, breaking through the line before cutting to the sideline and outrunning the Panther defense. (via Brice Cherry)

Bosqueville-Axtell

Bulldogs 29-22: Popham 2 run, then 2-point conversion, 11:55 left in 4th (via Chad Conine)

Rogers-Troy

Eagles 21-14: Rogers scores twice in the third quarter to take the lead. About to start the fourth.

Robinson-Salado

Ruben Martinez 20 pass to Boone Weiss. Michael Wagner kick failed. 13-13 4:00 third quarter. (via Justin Baer)

Lorena-Cameron

Cameron: Damyon Kelley 5 pass from Townsend (Chandler kick) 40-21 Cameron 8:20 2nd. (via Brian Bateman)

9:34 PM: Zach Hogeda grabs his first career touchdown with his third catch of the night … but China Spring gets the extra point lengthened by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. French will kick from the 25, and it’s good. 21-12 with about 7 left in the third.

9:32 PM: Thanks to the commenter who lets us know that the La Vega-Abilene Wylie game is 16-14 Wylie at the half. Unfortunately, that’s just a little too far for us to travel on a Friday night, even for the No. 2 team in the state.

9:30 PM: Now the Cougars are airing it out. Brian Bell has hit two big passes, the latest to Zach Hogeda to get China Spring into the red zone. Radio guys on 1010 KBW note that Mike Hicks and Reece Meador have been pretty quiet tonight as Hogeda and Travis Veselka have really stepped up.

9:25 PM: China Spring gets a break as the Groesbeck kicker misses a 20-something-yard field goal following the turnover. This one remains 14-12 as the third quarter keeps ticking with 9:35 to play.

9:22 PM: Jesse West loses the handle for China Spring, and Groesbeck has recovered at the Cougars’ 24. That’s the fourth turnover for CS this game.

9:20 PM: Brice Cherry reports: Marlin takes its first lead of the game, 14-10, on a 9-yard TD scamper from quarterback Charles Hitchens. We’ve got 9:59 left in a good’un here at the Legion Field.

9:17 PM: Cody Feight gets a 30-yard pass from Blackbur, and Bosqueville leads 29-14 with 4:07 left in the 3rd.

9:15 PM: You can always throw out the records in the Battle of Purple and Gold, as Jason Orts noted in today’s preview column. Marlin’s threatening in the red zone, and will start the fourth quarter with a 3rd-and-6 from the Panther 18. It’s 10-7 after 3.

9:14 PM: FIrst-half China Spring numbers: Brian Bell 10-of-20 for 126 yards. Leading receiver is Travis Veselka — his name was called an awful lot the first half — with 3 catches for 80 yards.

9:12 PM: Salado strikes early in the third with a 47-yard Ryan Lutz 47 pass to Tyler Wright. Kick failed, so the Eagles are up 13-7.

9:11 PM: Kyle Voss makes a big play, scoring on a 53-yard pass from Weston Popham to keep Axtell in the game. Longhorns trail Bosqueville 23-14 after the kick failed with 7:59 left in the third.

9:05 PM: Bosqueville’s putting some distance between itself and Axtell after Cameron Hoffmeyer scores on a 5-yard pass from Blackburn. Kick failed, and Bulldogs lead 23-8 with 9:54 left.

9:02 PM: Finally, a big play for Marlin, as freshman running back Justin Stewart breaks loose on a 51-yard TD run. It appeared as if Mart’s Xavier Williams might have the angle on Stewart at the 10, but Stewart deftly cut inside of Williams to complete the TD. Marlin has cut the Mart lead to 10-7 with 6:13 left in the third quarter. — Brice Cherry

8:53 PM: Don’t forget to check out our live-in-progress scoreboard at the top of our high school sports page. We’ve got updates on Temple and Belton, Dawson, Buffalo-Wortham and other games around the area.

8:50 PM: Bad news for Lorena as Cameron’s Steven Townsend throws his third TD pass of the game, this time a 42-yard strike to Ty Morgan with 0:04 left in the half. Kick blocked, so it’s 33-21 Cameron as both teams’ defenses (and offenses) will try and catch their breath.

8:44 PM: China Spring’s been unable to extend its lead as the Goats have controlled the ball well here in the second quarter, and it pays off as the Goats score with 4 seconds left. Groesbeck is hanging with the No. 3 team in the state, 14-12, at the break. Turnovers kill. Both teams have had a couple this half.

8:40 PM: Looks like Robinson’s defense is giving 2007 state semifinalist Salado all it can handle tonight. After the Eagles went up 7-0 on a Ryan Lutz-to-Trae Miller 18-yard TD pass, Ruben Martinez threaded a 31-yarder to Matt Walker to bring the Rockets square. Michael Wagner’s kick makes it 7-7 with 5:12 left in the half.

8:39 PM: Can you believe the scoring isn’t over yet in Lorena-Cameron? The Yoemen take their first lead of the game on a 2-yard Townsend run (kick failed). Lorena trails 27-21 with 2:24 left.

8:34 PM: No horrible “he was due” puns this week, I promise — but Bosqueville’s Brandon Due is making a name for himself with a 15-yard TD catch to put the Bulldogs up 17-8 over Axtell (kick failed). There’s less than a minute left in the half. Not exactly Due-or-die for the Bulldogs.

8:33 PM: It’s Troy 14, Rogers 7 at halftime after a scoreless first quarter. Rogers’ E.J. Larkin tied the score at 7 for the Eagles, but then the Trojans’ Derrick Vasta returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown to put Troy back on top.

8:27 PM: Lorena and Cameron are certainly keeping up with the Joneses. The Yoe’s James Wells score on a 22-yard run, and less than 2 minutes later, the Leopards’ Evan Ward hauled in a 45-yard scoring pass from Tyler Stewart to bring it back to square at 21.

8:26 PM: Brice Cherry reports: We’ve reached the half at Legion Field, and Mart is up 10-0. Marlin has run 35 plays to Mart’s 17, but the Bulldogs haven’t been able to put any points on the board, punting three times and fumbling away another chance.

Mart certainly hasn’t dominated anyone so far this year — 10 points is their best margin of victory so far.

8:24 PM: Cougars are forced to punt on 4th-and-17 from midfield

8:20 PM: The Yoeman haven’t had a lead yet, but they keep answering quickly. Justin Sapp scores on a 14-yard pass from Steven Townsend. 14-14 with 9:32 left.

8:19 PM: Could they be 3-0? Lorena isn’t laying down for anyone as Jon Bennett scores again, this time on a 2-yard run and the Leopards lead Cameron 14-7 with 10:10 left in the half.

8:18 PM: Mart-Marlin, courtesy of Brice Cherry’s seasoned eye: After Marlin fumbled away a scoring opportunity following an efficient 13-play drive, Mart quickly takes advantage. Panther QB Xavier Williams rolls out and finds a wide-open Ryan Montgomery behind the Bulldog defense, and the receiver sprints away to complete a 73-yard TD play. Mart now leads 10-0 with 3:10 left in the half.

8:16 PM: Strange play as Mike Hicks intercepts a Groesbeck pass and then fumbles it out of bounds. Even the Cougars announcers agree it was more like a dropped ball, though. Nevertheless, China takes over at its own 38 or so.

8:11 PM: The Goats have muffed the kickoff a bit — apparenly James French’s kickoffs are difficult to hold onto — and Grosebeck will need to go 96 yards to score.

8:10 PM: James French only needed one step to get out ahead of the Groesbeck secondary, and Brian Bell only needed one pass on one play in the second quarter. Cougars lead 14-6.

8:09 PM: Hunter Perry gives Bosqueville a little breathing room with a 28-yard field goal. The Bulldogs lead Axtell, 11-8.

8:06 PM: By the way, you can catch this China Spring-Groesbeck game on 1010-AM (KBW) tonight. Mexia-Athens is on 104.9-FM. And, of course, Baylor-UConn is on 1660-AM live here on WacoTrib.com on our Bear Blog.

8:03 PM: No conversion? No problem. Bosqueville scores a safety — not sure how — and the score is even at 8-8 after a quarter.

8:01 PM: Groesbeck has nearly pulled even on Aaron Ingram’s third TD catch of the year, but the 2-point run fails and the Goats trail China Spring 7-6 in the first.

7:58 PM: Mart’s standout kicker Matthew Shaeffer nails a 39-yarder that would’ve been good from 50. The Panthers are on the board, leading 3-0 with 11:06 left in the first half. — from Brice Cherry

7:57 PM: Cody Feight gets Bosqueville on the board with a TD pass from Blackburn (pass failed), and the Dogs trail 7-6 with 1:55 left in the 1st.

7:56 PM: Also, we hear Troy and Rogers are scoreless after a quarter. It’s a little low-scoring, but we definitely picked it as a close one in our picks box this week.

7:55 PM: Brice Cherry reports from Mart/Marlin: We’ve reached the end of one quarter here at Legion Field in Marlin, and the game is still scoreless. Mart has struggled offensively, turning the ball over on each of its first two possessions, but the Panthers are driving and will start the second quarter at the Marlin 25.

7:54 PM: Cameron may have been a little rusty due to Ike, but the Yoeman have popped right back into the game. Jamal Williams’ 10-yard TD pass from Steven Townsend makes it 7-7 with 5:31 left.

7:51 PM: Did you know you can vote for the Central Texas Player of Week every week on WacoTrib.com? Bosqueville QB Blaze Blackburn won last week. You can check it out on our high school sports page.

Chad Conine also profiled Blackburn and other 1A QB standouts in our preview story in today’s Football Weekender. It’s on newsstands every Friday, and if you pick up a copy, we might not go out of business.

7:42 PM: Upset in the brewing? Axtell jumps out on Bosqueville quickly as Porter Miles gets into the end zone at the end of a 17-yard run. Weston Popham punches it in for 2 an the Longhorns are up 8-0 with 7:41 left.

7:41 PM: Lorena’s jumped out to an early lead, as the Leopards’ Jon Bennett grabs an 18-yard pass from Tyler Stewart to make it 7-0 with 9:01 left in 1st.

The 5TH QUARTER: Sept. 12, 2008

10:25 PM: Final: Red Oak 26, University 20.

In other major scores: Chilton 32, Kerens 19; and we got a call saying Midway 10, Crowley 7.

10:16 PM: Barring something weird, University is done here after the onside kick isn’t successful for the Trojans.

10:15 PM: Mart 37, Teague 30, final. Much love to ex-Tribber David G. Campbell for keeping us in the loop on all the goings on out Freestone County-way.

10:14 PM: Some penalty confusion, but the conversion fails. 26-20 Red Oak with 1:45 left.

10:12 PM: But, there’s an offside penalty for Red Oak. Sloppy play from both teams in the second half. Trojans will try to convert again.

10:11 PM: It ain’t over for the Trojans — another quick strick from Randy Price to Demarcus Hicks for an 80-yard TD tomp. University elects to go for 2, down 26-20, and Price is stopped at the 1-yard line.

9:59 PM: Danzel Wilson’s had a busy night, scoring now on a 19-yard run. Pirates are up 45-6 now with 7:15 left in the game.

9:58 PM: Mart extends its lead over Teague, 37-22. Xavier Williams has 4 TDs on the night.

9:57 PM: From Fort Worth: Crowley 7, Waco Midway 7 (3rd)

Crowley QB Andre Dean scored on a 1-yard sneak, but Midway answered with a TD of its own.

9:55 PM: Personal foul penalty on the Trojans will be assessed on the kickoff. University has 5 and a half left to score twice, down 26-14.

9:53 PM: Bad news for University. Red Oak’s Seth Rushing burns the secondary for a 45-yard score to put the Hawks up 25-14. Penalty on the play will make a long PAT once again. But it’s good. 26-14.

9:52 PM: China Spring-Robinson is a final. 38-7 Cougars.

9:47 PM: Robinson finally gets on the board as Joey Vasser takes a 43-yard pass from Ruben Martinez to the house. 2:38 left.

9:45 PM: 55-yard University run on 4th-and-1! Randy Price put the Trojans right back in the game by getting all the way down to the Red Oak 5. Demarcus Hicks punches it and after a penalty play, University’s 2-point conversion is good. Trojans now trail 19-14 in the 4th.

9:44 PM: Danzel Wilson is spreading it around with a 12-yard TD pass to Daxton Swanson. Pirates lead 38-6 with 1:23 left in the 3rd.

9:43 PM: Looks like the Teague Lions are getting back in their groove, as they trail Mart just 30-22 after 3 quarters.

9:38 PM: Red Oak star RB Nic Boyd fakes out the University coverage and takes a 14-yard screen pass in for a score, but his surprise 2-yard conversion run gets called back on a penalty. So the Hawks kick a 30-yard PAT and lead 19-6.

9:29 PM: The expected: Euless Trinity leads Cedar Hill 37-7 at the half. The unexpected: Celina trails Daingerfield, 25-7 at the half … at home.

9:27 PM: Red Oak’s Seth Rushing finds the end zone at the end of another long Hawks drive. University trails, 13-6 here in the 3rd.

9:24 PM: How about another Hicks in on the action? This time it’s brother Matt, scoring on a 13-yard run with oh-26 left in the 3rd. Cougars lead Robinson, 38-0.

9:20 PM: La Vega’s spreading it around with their rushing attack tonight. This time, Tevin Thompson scores on a 5-yard run. It’s 31-6 over Roosevelt midway through the 3rd.

9:17 PM: Jesse West is making a name for himself in this one as he breaks free for a 43-yard run with 3:07 left in the 3rd. China Spring is turning this one into a yawner, 31-0.

9:10 PM: James French shows why he’s a star with a French 31-yard FG, 5:09 left in the 3rd. China Spring leads 24-0.

9:07 PM: La Vega kicker Eddy Gonzales extends the Pirate lead with less than a minute left. His 28-yard FG makes it 24-6 with 0:44 left in the half.

9:01 PM: Mike Hicks does it again — 90-yard kickoff return to open the second half. China Spring leads Robinson 21-0.

8:39 PM: The FW Star-Telegram has this report on a scoreless Midway-Crowley game: Neither team has found an offensive rhythm in the first half, as the second quarter has seen mostly 3-and-outs. Crowley fumbled a punt return inside its own 20, but a good effort from its defensive line has kept Midway’s offense ineffective.

8:39 PM: Around the greater Centex area, Copperas Cove has dispatched McKinney Boyd in another 6 p.m. start, 42-14. Also, Corsicana fell in a tough one to Whitehouse, 24-21.

8:38 PM: The Trojans try a 42-yard FG attempt, but it’s short as one of the Hawks’ defenders gets a fingertip on the ball. The half ends as Red Oak leads, 7-6.

8:32 PM: Maybe the scoring isn’t over yet! The Red Oak kick returner lets the ball bounce off his chest, and University has recovered at the Hawks’ 35.

8:30 PM: Danzel Wilson pitches in with a 1-yard run for a score. The kick is good and the Pirates lead Dallas Roosevelt, 21-6, halfway throught the 2nd quarter.

8:29 PM: One play, one score! The Trojans’ Tyrell Hackworth just leaves Red Oak in his dust on an 83-yard breakaway TD. But the PAT is no good, and Red Oak leads 7-6 as halftime approaches.

8:28 PM: Just getting back to the University game. Sounds like the Trojans have just recovered a fumble at the Red Oak 17 with 1:01 left in the half.

8:26 PM: It’s halftime out at China Spring. James French missed a FG right before the break, so it’s still Cougars 14, Rockets 0.

8:16 PM: And Waco High has knocked off the No. 9 Class 5A team in the state, 9-3. Way to go Lions!

8:15 PM: Chad Ward again — 2-yard run for La Vega. Danzel Wilson 2 pt run good. Pirates lead 14-6 with 11:05 left in the half.

8:14 PM: Mike Hicks? Heard of him? Robinson has. Brian Bell lofts the Cougars’ playmaker a 61-yard pass to put China Spring up 14-0 with just under 4 to play in the second.

8:13 PM: And Stony Point’s 4th-down pass is incomplete! Waco High’s stellar pass defense doesn’t allow the Tigers to get anything going, and the Lions take over with 1:13 left. It is in the bag for Johnny Tusa’s bunch.

A note on those field goals: the Stony Pt. kicker did miss one earlier in the game before making a 26-yard FG in the 2nd quarter.

8:10 PM: Good point from the radio guys: Stony Point had at least 2 opportunities to kick field goals and elected to go for it instead. Now, it could cost them the W.

8:07 PM: And Larry Jordan punches it in for Waco High! A facemask penalty on the defense is declined, and the Lions are up 9-3 with 2:17 left in the ballgame after a low snap on the PAT.

8:05 PM: Jesse West’s 4-yard run gets China Spring on the board in an old 17-3A matchup with Robinson. Cougars leads 7-0 with 7:12 left in the 2nd quarter.

8:04 PM: Waco High with a huge turnover! The Lions’ punt coverage fall on a muffed recovery by Stony Point at the Tigers’ 5-yard line. Waco High can smell victory at this point with just about 2 and a half left.

8:04 PM: It’s not San Juan Hill, but Roosevelt comes charging back with a touchdown on La Vega just seconds after the Pirates’ score. Brodrick Finch threw a 59-yard strike to Barron McDonald. The run failed, and it’s 6-6 with 6:11 left.

8:03 PM: After Jordan Griffin makes a first down on a nifty one-shoed run, Bronshae’Keon Dugas makes a surprise appearance for the Lions. It’s 3rd and 16 for Waco High with less than 3 minutes left now.

8:00 PM: It’s looking like a field goal could win this thing in the Waco High game with 4-5 minutes left. Remember that Waco High has the wind with them, and the great leg of Ernesto Guevara.

And consider this: I don’t know if the wind was blowing as much in the first half, but if it was blowing in the same direction as it is now, Guevara’s 55-yard FG was into the wind.

7:59 PM: From Bellmead: La Vega takes an early lead on a Chad Ward (who else?) TD. Run fails, and the Pirates lead 6-0 over Dallas Roosevelt halfway through the first.

7:57 PM: Terrible time for the Web radio to go out, but I’m back on it in time to hear the Tigers go for the end zone on 4th down and come up incomplete. That’s two consecutive stops for the Lions defense in their own red zone. Waco High takes over at its own 14.

7:53 PM: Waco High is deep in its own end zone after a 2-yard loss on 1st and 10. After getting a little 5-yard breathing room, Kollin Kahler’s pass is tipped and intercepted at the 15. Tough break for the Lions. Third INT on the night.

7:51 PM: And Waco High stops ‘em! RRSP’s QB tried some playaction, then tried to find the end zone on a sneak and was stopped for a 1-yard loss. It’s still 3-3 as the Lions’ defense is playing just a terriffic game so far.

7:50 PM: A pass down to the 2 yard line, and it’s 4th and goal for Stony Point.

7:49 PM: Radio guys speculating the wind is 35 mph. And RRSP is going into it. Yikes. A couple of botched pass plays, and the Tigers are 3rd-and-goal from the 12.

7:47 PM: Stony Point’s QB threw a picture-perfect dart to find a seam in the Waco High defense for a big pass down to the Lions’ 7. But a procedure penalty backs up the Tigers 5 yards, and Waco High stuffs the run on the ensuing 1st-and-10. End of third quarter, still 3-3 with Stony Pt. threatening.

7:45 PM: Ike is making a little bit of an appearance at Waco ISD Stadium as the winds are swirling a bit. The radio guys say the wind is with the Lions, though, and they’re surprised Johnny Tusa isn’t throwing the ball a little bit more. I guess those winds can be unpredictable, too.

7:44 PM: Guess you can’t keep Nic Boyd down for long. Red Oak keeps finding running lanes on a good sustained 78-yard drive and takes a 7-0 lead on a Boyd TD dive.

7:35 PM: University has forced a 3-and-out vs. Red Oak on its first possession. As Jason Orts noted in his preview column today, Red Oak is a dangerous team with an explosive RB in Nic Boyd.

7:30 PM: Now, it’s real game time. Here are the games you can catch on the radio around the area:

  • 1010-AM: Robinson at China Spring
  • 92.9-FM: University at Red Oak
  • 88.9-FM: Midway at Crowley
  • 104.9-FM: RR Stony Point at Waco High (in progress) And, of course, Baylor-Washington State is on the Bears’ flagship station, 1660-AM, if you’re so inclined.

7:15 PM: Jason Orts reports: A 55-yard field goal by Ernesto Guevara with eight seconds left in the first half has Waco High tied with Stony Point, 3-3, at halftime at Waco ISD Stadium.

The Lions managed only 41 yards of offense and two first downs, but managed to move the ball 19 yards in seven plays on their final drive of the first half to set up Guevara’s field goal, which banked in off the right upright. Stony Point quarterback Nyk McKissic, who averaged more than 300 yards passing in the Tigers’ first two games, struggled to a 5-for-14 first half for 62 yards.

6:58 PM: Have you heard Centex kickers are pretty darn unstoppable? No? Then you didn’t read today’s article in our football weekender preview section. Regardless, Waco High’s Ernesto Guevara showed off his leg with a booming FG from 55 yards out to tie things up at 3 with 8 seconds left in the half. Looks like the Lions will go into the locker room right in the thick of it and ready to turn on the offensive jets in the second half.

Well, it’s been a weird week, hasn’t it? Several games moved, a couple canceled, and a lot of people maybe thinking a little bit more about the weather than about football right now.

Nevertheless, we’ll soldier on here on WacoTrib.com. Waco ISD moved its game time up an hour and a half out on Bagby, and it’s a pretty tight game so far. It was scoreless after a quarter until Round Rock Stony Point’s Austin Caswell kicked a 26-yard field goal. It’s 3-0 right now.

For full in-progress scores, make sure to check out our scoreboard ticker at the top of this page and various places around the site.

Thursday Night Lights (thanks, Ike)

9:58 p.m. — Rosebud-Lott’s Flores dives for a first down. The Cougars will be able to run the clock for a 12-7 victory.

9:44 p.m. — Incomplete pass. Rosebud-Lott takes over at their own 10 leading 12-7 with 1:41 left.

9:41 p.m. — Normangee, trailing 12-7, is facing a fourth-and-goal from the Rosebud-Lott 10 with 1:51 remaining.

9:25 p.m. — Rosebud-Lott QB Ernesto Flores capped a 7-play, 81-yard drive by scrambling 15 yards for a touchdown. But Normangee stopped Flores trying to run for the two-point conversion. Rosebud-Lott 12, Normangee 7, 8:25 left in the fourth quarter.

9:16 p.m. — End of the third quarter. Normangee 7, Rosebud-Lott 6.

9:03 — Normangee’s Jordan Mullinnix dove across the goal line for a one-yard touchdown run and Whitley Reed added the extra point to push the Panthers ahead, 7-6, with 7:22 left in the third quarter.

8:31 p.m. — A mid-half rain — maybe the first sign of Hurricane Ike or maybe just rain — slowed the action down in the second quarter. The bottom dropped out and drenched the field for about 10 minutes. It stopped raining in time for Normangee to make its first trip past the Rosebud-Lott 25 late in the second quarter, but Cougars linebacker Austin Pomykal dropped Panthers running back Jordan Mullinnix for a five-yard loss on third-and-2 in the final minute of the half. Pomykal’s stop squashed the Panthers’ chance to put points on the board before intermission. Rosebud-Lott 6, Normangee 0 at the half.

7:58 p.m. — After a fast-moving and scoreless first quarter, Rosebud-Lott gets on the scoreboard first as DeAndre Thompson dives over the goal line for a touchdown. The kick failed, making it Rosebud-Lott 6, Normangee 0.

7:05 p.m. — I’m here at Rosebud-Lott’s Cougar Stadium for some Thursday night football courtesy of Hurricane Ike. Word earlier this afternoon was that Highway 77 was already getting clogged by traffic coming out of Houston. From what I could tell driving down to Travis, Texas (home of Rosebud-Lott High School) there were more cars than normal headed the other direction on 77, though not enough to slow anybody down too much.

Double dose of good news for Wolverine fans

I haven’t got many of the details yet, but it appears Penelope avoided a tragedy on Friday afternoon and then won a football game on Friday night.

News came down Saturday afternoon that three Penelope football players were involved in an auto accident. Two of the players were reportedly taken by ambulance to Hillcrest Hospital while a third, a sophomore who was ejected from the rolling vehicle, was care-flighted to Hillcrest.

That left Corey McAdams with nine players and a decision to make about whether or not to play. The Wolverines received word before the game that the players were sitting up and talking, so Penelope decided to play.

And play they did, pulling out a 52-51 victory over Kopperl.

The 5TH QUARTER: Sept. 5, 2008

10:54 PM — Couple of large-ish upsets: Lexington 20, Mart 19; Houston Bellaire Episcopal 31, Reicher 28.

10:45 PM — Now it’s time to quote one of the greatest movies of all time … Red Dawn: “WOLVERINES!” Penelope downed Kopperl 52-51 in a six-man game I’d like to have seen.

10:40 PM — No Rocket fuel left: Alvarado 49, Robinson 26, final.

10:32 PM — Cold ending for Frost, as Fruitvale scores one last time for a 28-21 win. Tough luck, guys.

10:26 PM — Upset watch: Lexington 20, Mart 12 in the 3rd, according to The Eagle’s live scoreboard.

In the Bruceville-Eddy win watch, the Eagles doubled up Centerville, 14-7.

10:21 PM — Wow. Who is Broam Hart? The Alvarado RB has his fifth TD of the night on a 56-yard run to put the Indians up 49-26 over Robinson.

10:16 PM — That’s about 2 interceptions in 2 plays for Mexia. Zach Davis grabs the ball out of the air and this one is finally over. China Spring 34-25 final, with the Blackcats putting in a definite noteworthy performance offensively.

10:15 PM — Mexia heaves a desperation pass, which gets picked and returned quite a long way for the Cougars. But then China Spring fumbles the ball, and the Blackcats are still (technically) alive down 34-25 with about 30 seconds left.

10:13 PM — We’re hearing La Vega 31, Brownwood 14 in the big top-10 matchup tonight. That’s a story.

10:12 PM — Heartbreaking back-and-forth loss for University, as it ends Dallas Carter 23, University 22.

10:11 PM — Ain’t over for the potent Rockets offense. Weiss finds the end zone, wide open on a seam route on 3rd-and-18 for a 37-yard TD catch from Martinez. The run failed, and Robinson is hanging around at 42-26 down with about 9 minutes to play.

10:10 PM — Connally ends with a 24-10 win over Marlin.

10:09 PM — Early nominee for lowest-scoring game of the night: Lorena 7, West 0.

10:07 PM — Brice Cherry: How about another TD for William Wright? Like a broken record, he plows in from a yard out, lifting Cove to a 41-20 lead (missed PAT) with 4:53 to play. For all intents and purposes, this one’s over. Also, William Wright’s five TD runs tie him in the Cove record books with former Notre Dame standout Vontez Duff.

10:05 PM — Alvarado’s Broam Hart scores again, putting Alvarado up a comfortable 42-20 over Robinson after 3 quarters. Maybe Midway doesn’t look so bad after last week’s 17-7 loss to the Indians.

10:04 PM — Time running out for Waco High. Cove is just chewing clock like nobody’s business with 6:25 left in the game. Lions trail 35-20.

10:03 PM — Attention, Rosebud-Lott watchers: The Cougars win again. This time it’s only a 26-18 win over Moody, so maybe they’re not world-beaters just yet.

9:57 PM — Michael Thompson continues the scoring for Connally wit a 21-yard TD run, going up 24-10 with a little under 4 to play.

9:56 PM — It’s gonna be a tense 6 minutes for University after Carter’s Trevion Miller scores on a 24-yard run (pass failed) to put the Dallas school up by 1, 23-22. 6:37 to play.

9:55 PM — Robinson hasn’t given up yet, and there’s more than a quarter to play: Matt Walker scores on a 12-yard pass from Ruben Martinez (kick failed) to pull within 35-20 behind Alvarado.

9:54 PM — Mexia botched a punt return, and the Cougars recover and quickly capitalize. China Spring leads 34-25 with about 4 minutes left.

9:52 PM — Midway extends its lead with a 25-yard field goal off the foot of Scott Newbury. 38-0 Panthers.

9:51 PM — Getting out of hand for Waco High? Cove indeed takes a 35-20 lead, cashing in with a seven-yard TD connection from Cody Vaughn to Sherone Miller. Vaughn totally fooled the Waco High defense on a bootleg, and Miller had his man beat easily. Fortunately for Waco High, there’s still a lot of time (11:12) to play.

9:49 PM — University retakes the lead! Demarcus Hicks streaks to the end zone on a 35-yard pass from Price (run failed) with 10:29 to play.

9:49 PM — Brice Cherry reports: Cove leads 28-20 at the end of the third quarter. But the Bulldawgs are looking to go up by two touchdowns, as they took advantage of an errant pitch from Waco High quarterback Kollin Kahler on the first play of the Lions’ ensuing offensive possession after the Cove TD. Cove recovered at the Waco High 9.

9:46 PM — Afraid it may be too late for the Rockets. Alvarado goes 69 yards in 5 plays, capped by a 37-yard Hart run. That makes it 35-14 for the Indians in the 3rd.

9:45 PM — Wondering where the Waco High scoring was? Us too. Brice Cherry reports: It took nearly the entire third quarter, but we’ve finally got a second-half score here in Copperas Cove. The Bulldawgs’ William Wright finds the end zone for the fourth time tonight, this time from 14 yards rather than one. It’s 28-20 Cove with 21 seconds left in the third quarter. Waco High’s run defense, once pretty stiff, has softened considerably this quarter.

9:44 PM — Wondering where Mike Hicks was? Not anymore — the China Spring WR emerges with his first score of the game to put the Cougars ahead 28-25 with 8 minutes to play.

9:43 PM — Midway recovers fumbled Vista Ridge kickoff on 29. On next play, Corey Holmes hits Anthony Betters with 29-yard touchdown pass. Midway 35 - Vista Ridge 0 11:02 remaining.

9:41 PM — Frost alert! The Polar Bears were down 13-0, then 21-16, and now they’ve jumped ahead of Fruitvale, 24-21.

9:40 PM — It’s good to have John Hubert. His third TD of the night makes it 28-0 for the Panthers early in the fourth.

9:38 PM — Mexia gets in the end zone — but then they go for the ol’ fake-PAT-to-2-point-pass trick, the Blackcats get picked off. Oops. It’s 25-21 in the 3rd.

The Blackcats took advantage of Brian Bell’s second straight interception of the night. Bell also has 3 TD passes for China Spring.

9:37 PM — The Rockets are getting back in the game with the first score of the second half with 8:12 left in the third, reports Jason Orts. Robinson’s Ruben Martinez eluded the Alvarado D on a 6-yard run after the Rockets took advantage of a 3-and-out by its defense and a short punt. The Rockets went 51 yards in only 4 plays — three carries for 48 by Martinez — to get back in the game.

9:36 PM — Mexia has picked off CS QB Brian Bell deep in Cougar territory. One play gets the Blackcats to the goal line, and Mexia will have 1st and goal from the 1.

9:36 PM — Carter has just gone ahead of University, 17-16 on a Robert Andrews TD.

9:35 PM — Couplea shutouts have already gone final: Abbott 46, Cranfills Gap 0 and Bosqueville wound up winning 62-0 over Texas Christian.

9:31 PM — Connally’s grabs a field goal in an apparently tight game. Cadets lead 17-10 over Marlin with 2:42 left in the third.

Thanks to the folks at KNES radio in Fairfield for sending along these halftime scores: Fairfield 18, Ferris 13; Groesbeck 25, Teague 21; Bruceville-Eddy 7, Centerville 7.

9:21 PM — China Spring’s radio broadcast is cutting in and out pretty badly, so I wasn’t able to catch how the Cougars went up 21-19 on Mexia. But that’s where it stands.

9:20 PM — Looks like Midway isn’t going to let another one get away. The Panthers are shutting out Vista Ridge, 21-0, with the most recent score coming courtesy of John Hubert.

9:15 PM — Bosqueville leads 49-0 after three quarters. Blaze Blackburn threw a 2-yard score to DJ McCormick and Joseph Jorgenson found the end zone on a 10-yard pass from Cody Feight.

9:05 PM — Halftime in Robinson; Jason Orts reports: The Alvarado Indians turned each of Robinson’s three lost fumbles into touchdowns and they hold a 28-7 halftime at Rocket Field.

Alvarado took a 28-0 lead before the Rockets grabbed some momentum before the half with a six-play, 62-yard march that was capped by an 11-yard pass from Ruben Martinez to Boone Weiss.

The Indians’ Broam Hart has 52 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, while quarterback Thomas Head is 7-for-10 passing for 94 yards and a score. Dominic DeGrate leads the Rockets with 52 yards rushing, and Martinez has added 51.

9:00 — It’s halftime most places, but it looks like Reicher’s getting quite the test from Bellaire Episcopal, holding a 22-21 lead in the 2nd.

8:52 PM — Robinson looks like it’s got some rhythm as Ruben Martinez tosses a perfectly executed throwback screen to Boone Weiss for an 11-yard score. Alvarado bought the bootleg and Weiss had a convoy of blockers in front of him for the easy TD. It’s 28-7 Alvarado right before the half.

8:51 PM — We’ve reached the half here at Bulldawg Stadium, with Cove leading 21-20. Waco High’s run defense has been outstanding, but the Lions are going to have to pick it up in their pass coverage, as Cove has had a field day there. The Lions’ Toylon Clark leads all rushers with 93 yards on 9 carries. — Brice Cherry

8:47 PM — Brice Cherry: Waco High wastes a chance to go ahead. On a fourth-and-goal from the Cove 1, Kollin Kahler fumbles on
