Bosqueville-Shiner softball state final
MORE
10:18 a.m. — Ball game, Shiner wins 11-1 in six innings, due to the run-rule. Pretty impressive performance by the Lady Comanches, who also won their state semifinal game by the run-rule.
10:13 a.m. — We’ve been without an Internet signal here at McCombs Field for more than an hour, but they’ve finally got it up and running again. At any rate, Shiner now leads 10-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning. The Lady Comanches exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third and added a three-spot in the fifth.
9:01 a.m. — Iesha Flowers drops in a single to right, and Bosqueville rightfielder Cayla Crews unleashes a “wow” throw that nearly nailed Ullmann at third base. Fortunately for the Lady Dogs, they get out of the inning when leftfielder Morgan Elkins makes a running catch on a gapper from Holly Haas. It’s 1-0 Shiner after two complete.
8:59 a.m. — Michelle Miller doesn’t even have to move in center field, as Paige Michalec skies a fly ball right to her. Two away.
8:56 a.m. — Shiner takes a 1-0 lead, as Morgan Ullmann slaps a grounder to Haley Feight at short. Feight goes to second for the force-out, Ullmann reaches on a fielder’s choice, and Haas scores. One out.
8:55 a.m. — Zoiks. Another error from Hayes, as a grounder off the bat of Amber Shimek ate her up with an in-between hop. Shiner is in business, with runners on the corners and no outs.
8:52 a.m. — Shiner’s Haas opens the inning by grounding a roller to Bosqueville freshman Hannah Hayes at third. Hayes can’t make the scoop quite quickly enough, and Haas is aboard with an error. She promptly moves to second on a wild pitch.
8:50 a.m. — Quick inning for Shiner ace Heather Haas, as she retires Bosqueville in order. It’s still 0-0 heading to the bottom of the second.
8:46 a.m. — We’ve had our obligatory playing of “Center Field.” Gotta love it.
8:45 a.m. — Bosqueville senior Ashley Barnes retires all three Shiner hitters, on a popout and a pair of groundouts. It’s fairly remarkable how effective Bosqueville’s pitchers (Barnes and Michelle Miller) are despite not being overpowering. Neither has yet to record a strikeout at the state tourney, yet here they are, stringing up zeroes.
8:40 a.m. — Well, that was exciting, but didn’t produce the result Bosqueville wanted. After a flyout to left from Michelle Miller, Haley Feight delivered a single up the middle that looked as if it may score Getman from second. But Shiner centerfielder Iesha Flowers made a strong throw to nail Getman by a half-step at the plate. No score after half an inning.
8:33 a.m. — Great start for Bosqueville, not so much for Shiner. Grace Getman reaches on an infield single, then Hannah Hayes lays down a nice bunt to move her over.
8:31 a.m. — The players have been introduced, we’ve sung along to the National Anthem, and we’re ready to play ball. Bosqueville is the visiting team and will bat first. If memory serves, the Lady Bulldogs were the visiting team last year when they beat Shiner in the state final. A good omen?
8:25 a.m. — Brice here, back again to bring you some exciting state tournament action here on WacoTrib.com. Incidentally, I’ve got to give a shout-out to the DJ here at McCombs Field in Austin this week. We’ve heard “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “It’s a Long Way To the Top (If You Want to Rock and Roll),” “More Than a Feeling” and a lot of other classic 1980s tunes that make me smile.
