For more photos from today’s game, visit our slide show.
1:06 p.m. — Ramirez grounds out to end the game. Final score: Aledo, 6-0. The Lady Bearcats will play for the 4A state championship Saturday at 5 p.m. against the winner of Dripping Springs and Nederland.
1:04 p.m. — Alyssa Lewis, who has been on a tear in the playoffs, delivers a two-out single to right for Midway’s second hit of the game off Canion. Alyssa Ramirez will bat with two runners on.
1:03 p.m. — Lauren Griffith works a four-pitch walk. It ain’t over yet.
1:01 p.m. — Canion uncorks a wicked change-up to strike out Sienna Miller for out No. 2.
12:59 p.m. — In what is likely her final high school at-bat, Holley Gentsch hits a little pop-out to the catcher for the first out of the seventh. Gentsch, a terrific player for Midway for the past four years, is headed to Texas Tech next year.
12:56 p.m. — Kelly retires the side in order in the bottom of the sixth. Headed to the top of the seventh, Midway still trails, 6-0, and will need a miraculous rally.
12:53 p.m. — Three-up, three-down for Midway. Kelly flies out to right, Robertson strikes out after fouling off several fastballs and then Ward grounds out 4-to-3.
12:46 p.m. — Kelly catches Hillary Brann looking with a fierce fastball on the outside corner. After five complete innings, it’s 6-0, Aledo. Due up for Midway is Kelly, Robertson and Ward.
12:44 p.m. — Kelly fans Easton Cook, then gets Bell to pop out to Sienna Miller for the second out. But Shahan ruins the chance for a perfect inning by dropping in a bloop single to center.
12:42 p.m. — 17-game winner Lizzy Kelly is now on the pitching rubber for Midway.
12:39 p.m. — A quick 3-up, 3-down for Midway, as Canion retires Lewis, Ramirez and Howard in order, striking out the first and third. She’s got 5 Ks, and the Lady Bearcats are rolling along.
12:34 p.m. — Ward finally strikes out Canion, who got everything going with that leadoff double, to end the inning. But Midway faces a major uphill climb against a very good pitcher, trailing 6-0 going into the top of the fifth.
12:32 p.m. — It’s 6-0 Aledo. First, Shahan pinballs a come-backer off the glove of Ward — it was scored an error — that squirts through the infield and scores Canion’s pinch-runner and Bell. Then Aledo adds another run on a fielder’s choice grounder by Kelley, as Shahan slides in just ahead of Ramirez’s throw home. Two batters later, Samuelson absolutely scorches a gapper over the head of Gummelt in center and races around the bags for a two-run, inside-the-park home run. Aledo is still batting with two outs.
12:24 p.m. — Andi Shahan takes a close 3-2 pitch. After an appeal on the ball call, she takes first on a walk. Bases are loaded.
12:22 p.m. — Following a flyout to left from Easton Cook, Aledo’s Bell smacks a grounder that Miller makes a nice stop on at short, but the Midway fielder has no real chance to throw her out. There’s two on with one out.
12:19 p.m. — Canion drills a deep screamer that freezes Midway centerfielder Caitlynn Gummelt momentarily. Aledo is in business with a leadoff double.
12:17 p.m. — Aledo second baseman Pittman makes a heckuva play on a little dying quail off the bat of Griffith. Pittman laid out to make the stab before the ball hit the turf just in front of the second-base bag. Otherwise, it would’ve been a clear infield single and Midway would have scored. Instead, we’re still scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth.
12:16 p.m. — Miller takes a 2-2 fastball over the outside edge of the plate for strike 3. Lauren Griffith will now bat with two outs.
12:15 p.m. — Ward is now standing at third base, following a wild pitch from Canion.
12:13 p.m. — Ward is doing it all. On the first pitch of the fourth, she rolls a bunt in between the pitcher and first baseman, then beats out a bang-bang throw. Holley Gentsch follows with a perfect sac bunt to move Ward into scoring position for Sienna Miller.
12:10 p.m. — Ward catches Pittman looking to end the inning. Kermie now has 4 strikeouts for the game. Through three innings, it’s still knotted at zero.
12:09 p.m. — That’s followed by a sweet foul-ball catch here in the open-air press box from one of the other sportswriters. Sign him up.
12:08 p.m. — We’ve finally got our first hit in this 4A state semifinal. Samuelson slaps a 3-2 fastball into left for a two-out single.
12:04 p.m. — Alyssa Ramirez opens the inning with a solid play for Midway in the field, as the second baseman goes to her left to stop a grounder off Kelley’s bat, then throws the runner out. She quickly makes another 4-to-3 putout on Denny as well.
12:02 p.m. — Midway’s still looking for a hit against Canion. Lizzy Kelly strikes out and Makenzie Robertson grounds out to third. Due up for Aledo in the bottom of the third: Christina Kelley, Katie Denny and Samuelson.
Noon — Aledo’s Bell makes a great backhanded stop at third base, then throws to first to get Kayla Howard for the first out of the top of the third.
11:56 a.m. — Three-up, three-down for Aledo, as Ward retires Andi Shahan by strikeout and Hillary Brann on a groundout. 0-0 after 2 innings.
11:54 a.m. — Nice long throw by Midway shortstop Sienna Miller for a 6-to-3 putout on Aledo’s first batter of the second inning, Haylee Bell.
11:52 a.m. — That’s just not fair. After starting out Alyssa Ramirez with the major cheeze whiz, Canion whips out the change-up to induce another groundout. Headed to the bottom of the 2nd, still no score.
11:50 a.m. — Two up, two more down for Midway. Canion strikes out Lauren Griffith, and then Alyssa Lewis grounds out to short.
11:46 a.m. — Ward, whose pitcture should be in the dictionary next to “Gamer,” has it working, too. She whiffs Canion and then induces a groundout from Easton Cook to get out of the inning. Going into the top of the 2nd, we’re scoreless.
11:41 a.m. — Aledo’s K.K. Pittman works a walk.
11:39 a.m. — Good start for Midway in the field, as Kermie Ward fans leadoff hitter Lyndi Samuelson.
11:37 a.m. — After a Holley Gentsch groundout, Sienna Miller also hits a fly straight up behind the plate to the catcher, retiring the side. Aledo’s Canion is the real deal, by the way. She’s throwing some serious smoke.
11:32 a.m. — One pitch, one out. Kermie Ward pops out to the catcher.
11:29 a.m. — Well, the players have been introduced, we’ve paid homage to the flag and now it’s time to play some softball. Midway is the visiting team and will be at bat first against Baylor-bound Aledo pitcher Whitney Canion.
11:17 a.m. — Well, we’re back again here at McCombs Field on the campus of the University of Texas for the Midway-Aledo state semifinal softball game. I, your friendly neighborhood blogger, will be here to take you through the game with continual updates. Right now, both teams have gone through infield and we’re just sitting here jamming to Lynnrd Skynnrd waiting for the introduction of the lineups.
