Bosqueville, Midway off to state
Sherry Rogers’ seemingly unshakable Midway team and Clint Zander’s defending state champ Bosqueville squad both play for another state championship banner at the UIL state tournament this week. Here’s a closer look at each of their matchups:
MIDWAY (28-7) vs. ALEDO (36-1-1)
What: Class 4A state semifinals
When: 11:30 a.m. Friday
Scouting Midway: Full of mirth and moxie, Midway has responded to every challenge it has faced this postseason. The Pantherettes have won three straight series despite trailing 0-1 in each of them. Of course, they won’t be able to lose and continue playing at state. Midway sophomore Kermitria Ward has stepped up large in the playoffs, going 6-0 in the pitching circle. Lizzy Kelly (17-5 on season) gives Midway another fierce pitching weapon, and she also leads the team with 6 HRs. All but two of Midway’s regular starters are hitting better than .400 on the season.
Scouting Aledo: Making their first-ever state tourney appearance, the Ladycats no doubt have what it takes to win it all. Ranked No. 1 in both the state and the nation (by USA Today), Aledo has won 36 games in a row since losing its season opener to Belton, a game in which senior ace Whitney Canion did not pitch. Canion, a Baylor signee, has proven virtually untouchable, going 29-0 with 353 strikeouts in 184 innings. Canion, whose fastball clocks in at 60 mph, also drove in the winning run in Aledo’s 1-0 regional final win over Joshua last weekend.
What Midway coach Sherry Rogers says: “Our team’s not very fazed. They had to look up Hallsville on a map (when we played them). I have to remind them all the time that other teams are good. … If anyone can knock off a bunch of cocky people, it’s my cocky people. I mean, my confident bunch.”
BOSQUEVILLE (24-7) vs. CLYDE EULA (22-11)
What: 1A state semifinals
When: 8:30 a.m. Thursday
Scouting Bosqueville: You can’t win in much more dramatic fashion than Bosqueville did last year, when the Lady Bulldogs toppled Shiner for the state crown on Raygan Feight’s grand slam home run — the only salami in the history of the state tourney. Feight, who’s headed to the University of Texas after a stellar season at MCC, is long gone, but the Lady Bulldogs are still pretty ferocious. The core of the team is made up of juniors, including Raygan’s little sis Haley Feight (.381, 42 RBIs) and pitcher Michelle Miller (.505, 49 RBIs to go with a 13-1 pitching record). This is a team that definitely knows its way to home plate, scoring 10 runs or more in 16 games, including four in the playoffs.
Scouting Clyde Eula: The Lady Pirates have more losses than any team at state, but they’ve won when they had to — surviving a pair of three-game series in the postseason. They’re also not a stranger to the state stage, as they’re making their third trip to Austin the past five years. Senior first baseman Kaci Childers, who was 2-for-5 in Clyde Eula’s decisive 12-7 Game 3 regional final win over Marfa, is a tough out with a whopping .535 batting average. Sophomore Jenna Betcher, who sports a team-best 13-2 record, will likely draw the pitching assignment.
What Bosqueville coach Clint Zander says: “Everybody’s been telling me we’re peaking at the right time, and I think they might be right. We lost a great player in Raygan, someone the whole community of Bosqueville looked up to. You didn’t know if that was going to be something with the kids where they said, ‘We can’t do anything without her.’ But they didn’t. They responded well.”
