Breaking Down Spring Football

The University Trojans and Waco High Lions are in the final days of spring football workouts, as University will wrap up on Friday while Waco High concludes with its annual spring game on May 30. The Waco area’s other 4A school, Midway, opted to forgo on spring drills this year because its quarterbacks were playing baseball.

Here’s a quick report from both the University and Waco High camps:

UNIVERSITY TROJANS

Coach: Matt Carroll (first year)

Last year’s record: 2-8

Fiercest position battle: It’s playing out in the secondary, where a quintet of talented defenders are grappling for the two starting cornerback positions. They include Toderick Mays, Jaymon Levels, Demond Wilson, Davionte Dobbins and Dez Dowdy.

Breakout player: Randy Price. A two-year starter at quarterback, Price is already a familiar name to Central Texas football fans. But as he enters his junior year, he appears ready to make the jump to legitimate statewide stardom. “Randy’s been doing great in the spring,” Carroll said. “He just continues to develop maturity-wise, and he’s been getting more and more comfortable with the new offense.”

Carroll on camp: “The main thing for us is, we’re trying to cover a lot of new ground. We’ve got new coaches and we’re implementing a new system, but the great thing is we’re actually ahead of schedule. The thing we want to accomplish these last few days is just to stay away from injuries, so we’re able to come back for our summer workouts healthy and ready to go.”

WACO HIGH LIONS

Coach: Johnny Tusa (23rd year)

Last year’s record: 9-2

Fiercest position battle: After fielding one of the top defensive line units in the state the last two seasons, Waco High has some holes to plug there, as only Andrew Weaver returns as a starter. Fortunately the Lions have had some players step up and claim the vacancies as their own, including Eric Williams and Jamie Minor. At linebacker, Tristan Edge and Lamarquet Jones are also grappling for a starting role.

Breakout player: Tywan Benjamin. A backup defensive end on last year’s team, Benjamin has emerged beyond the coaching staff’s expectations, Tusa said. The coach also predicts grand things for running back Toylon Clark, who will see an increased workload with the departure of Baylor-bound tailback Jarred Salubi.

Tusa on camp: “This is the time you learn what you can do and what you can’t do, what you need to work on the most. We’ve got a lot of players who are still growing up. We’ve got some players who have bodies like men, but we’re still maturing in other areas.”
