Midway’s Reed battling for USA spot
As a Midway Pantherette, Cokie Reed is used to red, white and blue uniforms. Now, she’ll be trying to put on those colors as a member of the United States under-18 national team.
Reed has been selected to compete for a spot on that team at the USA Basketball tryouts in Colorado Springs, Col., on June 9-12. A first-team Super Centex, all-region and all-state pick, the 6-foot-4 Reed averaged 16.6 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 4.6 blocks this season for Midway, which lost to Dallas Lincoln in the Region II-4A final.
If she made the team, Reed would then accompany the national team to the FIBA Americas Championship in Venezuela in July.
One of Reed’s teammates at Midway, senior guard Jasmin Thomas, also made a decision about her basketball future this week, as she plans to sign with Tyler Junior College. A 5-5 guard, Thomas averaged 7.6 points, 5 rebounds and 3.3 steals her senior year.

that is absolutely great news about Cokie Reed. It is interesting that Ryan Gebhart a current Midway senior, was invited two times to the USA team trials in baseball and received no local coverage. He was mentioned in a number of national publications.
