On the agony of defeat

Sports can put you on cloud nine, but sports can also send you reeling.

On Tuesday, the Midway Pantherettes soccer team was sent reeling.

Facing a big, fast and physical McKinney Boyd team — the Broncos play Richardson Pearce on Friday and the winner of that game, I predict, will easily win the 4A state championship — Midway gave up two goals in the first nine minutes of play. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Midway forward and team-leader Monica Lee Gladney took a shot in her left leg and went down within the first 10 minutes.

From my vantage point from the press box, it looked like she just took a hard kick and maybe had a deep bone bruise. If only. Word yesterday was that it’s ligament damage that will require surgery.

I had the chance to talk to former Midway star Kaitlyn Amos at the match. Amos, ironically, tore her ACL playing for Baylor in the fall in almost the exact same way — an opposing player came into her and wrecked the knee. She hadn’t seen the play when Gladney got hurt and when I described it, I could see the intense sympathy in Kaitlyn’s eyes. Kaitlyn and Monica Lee are friends, so hopefully they can help each other get back on the field for their next seasons.

I also heard there were a few schools looking at Gladney, a junior, to play college soccer. I hope they’ll look past the injury to see a player with a lot of leadership and heart.

Gladney is by far the best Female High School soccer player I have seen in years. You can tell that this girl will go far in soccer. If these colleges don’t look past the injury they are complete idiots. Word.
