Pantherettes add to March Madness

So, I’m sitting here watching the NCAA national quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon and it occurs to me that there haven’t been many buzzer-beating thrillers this weekend.

At least I got to see one on Friday night — soccer style.

As the Midway-Crowley girls’ match ticked down to less than 10 minutes left (think the last two minutes in a basketball game) I began to get the feeling that it was headed to overtime.

But instead Midway’s Jeri Hicks provided soccer’s version of a buzzer-beater. When Hicks took a pass in the middle of the field from Taylor Fletcher, it looked like she would have a scoring chance. As she dribbled and pulled away from the Crowley defense, that chance started to look better. When the Crowley goalkeeper came off the goal line she was toast. Hicks made the shot in the right side and the strong contingent of Midway fans at Alvarado’s Indian Stadium went ballistic.

Definitely an entertaining soccer match.

Midway will play in the regional semifinal against McKinney Boyd at 7 Tuesday night at Midlothian High School.
