Weather Could Be Worse
Spring took a U-turn today in terms of the weather, as the temperature dipped back down into the 50s and that ever-present March wind picked up.
But, hey, it could be a lot worse.
I interviewed new University football coach Matt Carroll this past week for a Q&A story for Sunday’s paper, and one of the things I wanted to know was what his favorite football memory was. He offered an interesting anecdote that didn’t make the final version of my story, but I thought I’d go ahead and share it here:
“There were a lot of great memories. At Hardin-Simmons we had some very successful teams, very successful teams. It wasn’t an all-out positive memory, but it’s one I have, the coldest game I ever played in was in Westminster, Pennsylvania. It was a national semifinal game, and I remember getting off the bus and the Pennsylvania fans were saying, ‘These Texas boys can’t take this cold!’
“A blizzard was blowing in, the field was next to the lake, it was a 15-below wind chill, and the wind was coming in sideways. We were walking in and they were saying, ‘These Texas boys can’t handle this cold!’ At that point, I agreed with them. It was pretty cold. We lost that game 10-0, and it was probably the most miserable football game I’ve ever been in. … Playing in that weather was kind of an experience in itself.”
